Rugby Comes to an End… For Now!

A massive thank you to Niamh from Wigtownshire Rugby Club for delivering 4 Rugby session with pupils the second half of this term. It was been great seeing the boys and girls getting stuck in and muddy in the playing field in all types of weather and practising a new sport! Hopefully this has inspired some new hobbies for the pupils!?

Spring Clean at Kirkcolm Primary!

On Thursday morning the pupils of Kirkcolm have been outside enjoying a big spring clean🧹, P5-7 went up to Bayveiw Terrace and P1-4 stayed litter picking in our playground. They also went on  fishers lane, and surprisingly picked up more litter than P5-7 🫢

On the downside 👎when we counted the litter we found out that there was more litter in the playground and that they barely found any down fishers lane.😬

So can you please keep our village and playground clean.🙏

Reach for the Sky – A Spectacular Sporty Performance!

After weeks upon weeks of hard work, line learning, song singing and Mrs Morrison yapping about costume and props – we were finally able to show all the lovely mums and dads and grannies, grandads etc. the fruits of our labours!

The pupils put on, not just 1, but 2(!!!) spectacular performances yesterday at 1:30pm and 7pm! Our School Sports Day themed play had the audience in fits and giggles as we explored the dynamics of competition parents, the horrors of the lost property box and trials and tribulations that come with visits to the local swimming pool (all tongue in cheek – of course!)

We are so incredibly proud of the boys and girls of Kirkcolm Primary for the hard work they put into this! They really smashed it, particularly at the nighttime performance, and they never let us down. Thank you to all who attended and bought raffle tickets – we always make sure your pennies go on something special for the pupils.

Here is a link to the performance on Youtube for anybody who wants a second watch or who couldn’t make it on the night!

Reach for the sky

Only 2 more days until the Easter Holiday and these pupils have well and truly earned their break!

Comic Relief Costume Craziness 🔴

Today, Kirkcolm school was filled with so many creative costumes and so much laughter🤭! Pupils were asked to dress as something beginning with the first letter of their name, and they certainly rose to the challenge! We had astronaut Andrew🧑‍🚀 , Orla the ostrich 🐦Aila the Amazon package 📦 Emilie the Eagle 🦅Lyle the lollipop man🍭 so many other hilarious costumes too! Staff couldn’t resist the chance to get stuck in with the fun as well. We had Batman Baillie, Cowboy Campbell, Mrs Morrison the Magician, Granny Gordon, Miss Agnew the athlete and Mrs Adams as Aldi… and together we all made for the most random collection of people and things🤪

After spending most of breakfast club time crying with laughter, we snapped some funny pictures to mark what we all agreed was “one of the best dress up days we’ve had” with some photos and celebrate all the effort and hard work that has clearly went into planning and making the costumes. We even had a community member comment on how inclusive our school was after observing a ‘gigantic chicken playing football’.. however it was in fact an eagle 😂😂

A huge big thank you to everyone for getting into the spirit and making such an effort with their costumes! We hope that all our fun, and red nose sales has raised awareness for the wonderful charity Comic Relief and the hard work they do for children living in poverty!

Well done Team Kirkcolm! YouTube video link to all the fab costumes is here  📽️

A Ram Tam Afternoon!

Wow – what a performance this afternoon! P1-4 have been working very hard these past 10 weeks, learning about rhythm, beat, music and the tin whistle! Today they were able to show off all this hard work in a final performance to the P5-7 class!

We were amazed at how those little hands managed to move over the holes of the tin whistle and create some good music to the tunes of Baby Shark and Ally Bally! A huge thank you to Helen from Ram Tam from delivering this with the class 🎶😀

Rotary Quiz!

Well done to Arran ,Ruby, Allyssa and Fallon (last minute stand in!) for their participation at the Rotary Quiz last night! The questions were tough but they gave an excellent effort – even if a win wasn’t in the cards for this year!

Perhaps next year we will take it for Kirkcolm…

Galloway Music Festival Success

Wowowow! A huge well done to our very own Primary 5 – Rory Calvert. Who attended the Galloway Music Festival last week and managed to win first place in the Primary 4-5 Prose Reading!

This was a fantastic achievement, and having seen his score card, I can assure you he scored extremely highly and was commended for his excellent reading efforts. No surprises there from such a literacy super star!

A Musical Friday Afternoon

This was a lovely and soothing Friday afternoon going to the Ryan Centre with our friends from Leswalt to listen to a clarinet quartet! Music for All is a fantastic input which can inspire pupils about the wide variety of talents these lovely musical individuals have!

We heard animal impersonations, Toy Story renditions, We Don’t Talk About Bruno and the magic of a Clarinet getting pulled apart – but somehow still playable!?

Thank you to the Team who allow this to happen every year for pupils – it is a joy to witness 🎼🎵🎶

Marvellous Maths challenge!

Today 3 of our pupils – Lyle, Arran and Fallon had the exciting opportunity to take part in the Enterprising Maths Challenge at Douglas Ewart High School in Newton Stewart. They joined 11 other teams from the Rhins and Machars to show off their amazing maths brains! 🧠
The challenge was made up of three different activities, designed to really get their maths brains thinking and applying what they’ve been learning to new, exciting concepts.➕➖➗🟰
The P7 trio began the morning with a poster making competition based on “The Story of Money.” 💰 This creative task encouraged teams to explore how money has developed over time, from early trading systems to the modern forms of currency we use today. In the weeks leading up to the challenge the Primary 7s had been busy researching foreign currency and up and coming, new digital currencies including Bitcoin- impressive stuff! 💷💵💳🪙
Teams were challenged to take part in a Prophecies game which challenged pupils to think strategically to place numbers on a grid, predicting how many numbers would be placed in that row/column. Have a go at home! https://mathgameswithbaddrawings.com/games/prophecies 💭
The final part of the day challenged pupils to answer past paper questions in the form of a relay race! The three pupils, really put their heads together and showed excellent team and work and mathematical thinking! 😁

Science Week Open Afternoon

This week has been Science Week Scotland! Although we are very busy little bees right now preparing for our School Show Performance – we couldn’t miss an opportunity to invite all the special people around us into the school to celebrate Science with us with some experiments! 🔬🧪🔍

Station 1: Building Bridges! 🌉

Mrs Adams manned the bridge building station in the hall – parents and pupils were challenge to construct a bridge out of different materials (such as spaghetti, marshmallows, paper, tin foil… etc.) and this bridge had to support a 1kg weight on top of it! This was a fantastic challenge to get people thinking and seeing if they can reinforce their structures to support that weight!

Station 2: Sailing Boat! ⛵

Miss Agnew led a boat building station in her class – the challenge was to construct a boat that could;

a. Float!

b. Hold the most marbles while continuing (!) to float!

They were given materials like tinfoil, straws, paper etc. to try and complete this challenge! ⚓

Station 3: Microbits 💻

The tech experts – Paige and Ross, digtal leader extraordinaries – led a programming MicroBits session in the P5-7 classroom. This gave pupils and parents a chance to program their MicroBits to undertake a variety of different jobs. This included jobs like; sunshine sensors, thermometers and compasses! ☀️🧭🌡️

Station 4: Fizzy Hands! 👐💥

We got to grips with some chemical experiments – seeing what would happen if we mixed up some common household items and the reaction that takes place from it! We got to see first hand the rather explosive outcome that took place! (thankfully we conducted this outside for minimal mess!)

Overall it was a fantastic afternoon and we are so grateful for everyone who took time out of their day to come in and see us! We look forward to seeing you all again very soon for our yearly drama performance! 🎭
