Term 3 P5/6

P5/6 has been very busy this term

Mathematics: In maths p5/6 have been learning about how to change mixed numbers to   improper fractions and back again with Mrs Clanachan. With Mrs Sloan they have been learning the formal written method.

Literacy: In literacy p5/6 were learning to write a recount so they wrote a recount about the blitz.  Also p5/6 did persuasive writing and debates. The debates were about  whether every household should have a pet and should you be gaming if you’re under the age of 16?

French: In French p5/6 has been learning all about their body for example: hair, how tall and eye colour. They were also learning the alphabet in French.

IDL:  In IDL p5/6 were learning all about WW2. They learned all about the evacuees to the blitz and the Anderson shelters to the black outs then p5/6 moved on from WW2 and moved to forces which are air resistance, gravity, friction and magnetism.

Art: In art p5/6 have been linking it to their topic which is forces so they built a bridge with card and dictionaries. They got little weights to see how long the bridge would last.

Quit your way talk: p5/6  got a talk from Lisa who works with ‘Quit your way’ which can help people to stop smoking. A couple of people got to experiment with all of the chemicals that are in the drug  which is really harmful for your body.

In week 2 they went onto the computers to do online shopping but didn’t buy anything because they had a budget of £50  so they created a list of all the things they wanted but staying in the budget.  During week 3 in food and health they were learing all about bacteria and germs and they did an experiment on how people pass on germs really easily.  On week four the skills academy group did a risk assessment for their diner and allergies. Mrs Clanachan wrote a list so they could try all the foods that she wrote down. During the fifth week they had their taste test afternoon. There was kiwi, spicy  cheese, pea snacks, mango, avocado, guacamole, humus and carrots. The last week it was their diner week and they had smoothies, popcorn, tortilla chips, dip, chicken wings and bagels. The lower food and health skills academy  came along but before they came along p4/7 had to decorate the classroom to make it look all American so they put on songs and made table cloths for the tables . Author Visit To Nursery!

On Thursday 28th March, we were very lucky to have the author, Vivian French visit us in nursery in partnership with Big DoG Dumfries Children’s Book Festival that is happening this weekend and read us two of her books as well as teaching us some new songs.

She read us Captain Crankie and Seadog Steve and then Billy Hippo Learns to Swim.

We enjoyed both of these books and Vivian was really good at keeping us entertained and engaged.

Thank you to Vivian French and the Big DoG Dumfries Children’s Book Festival. The children brought home leaflets about the Big DoG Dumfries Children’s Book Festival, so have a look and see what’s on this weekend!

Term 3 Skills Academy with Mrs Sim

In skills academy our group was Community. First we made posters and leaflets about the drop off  zone then we put them up around the front of the school.

After that we all made bug hotels. We made them by cutting the bottom and the top off the milk carton then we rolled the newspaper up and put them inside to make little rooms for the bugs. Then we made bird feeders by melting butter to fat then getting rice krispies and mixing it together and putting them in yoghurt pots. Then we froze them for the nature garden the next week.
