The Dandelion project

The school is very excited to take part in a nation wide growing project over the next few months. The are 500 schools taking part, of which 100 have been selected to receive specialist growing equipment to take part in a national collective experiment.

We are very excited to be part of this project and the primary transition class will also be invited to take part.

The project has also given both primary and secondary schools a large amount of seed potatoes and we are keen for the children to take some home and grow them in their gardens or containers. We only ask that they share their growing journey by taking pictures of their potatoes at each stage through to harvest.

In the autumn, we intend to celebrate our achievements with a harvest assembly where the pupils can share their growing successes.

End of term Christmas 2021

Wednesday 22nd Dec was the last day of term in 2021. The secondary pupils celebrated the end of term with a range of activities. The main even was the church service, but with Covid restrictions there were no family members or primary pupils present. There were several musical performances from pupils, carol singing and a short message from Dr Bartholomew reminding us of the meaning of Christmas.

After the service the pupils returned to the school and spent the rest of the day enjoying a range of activities including board games and crafts.

It was a challenging term with rising infection levels and restrictions continuing but we pulled through it together.

The pupils and staff are looking forward to a new year where hopefully things will improve. The senior pupils are already preparing for prelims and looking towards their final exams. Perhaps this will be the year where things return to normal.

Do the Right Thing

“On 1st December S3 went to Castle Douglas High School to “Do the Right Thing” – a PSE workshop filled the day to make sure we were all caught up, and we got to meet new people. The workshops consisted of two plays, “A Night to Remember” and “It’s in his Kiss”.

All through the day there were different workshops to do with PSE including alcohol awareness, sexual health, hate speech, drugs, domestic abuse and mental health. These workshops were full of new and interesting things for the S3s and the day was kept fun and entertaining.

I think that the whole experience was worthwhile because it meant that the S3s had a day out to learn and meet new people and engage in different ways of learning, especially since most of the lessons’ teachers were NHS workers and police who knew what they were doing. The children really enjoyed it, thank you so much for organising this day out for us!”

A trip to Millport

The S3 and S4 pupils have just returned from a great two day field trip to Millport FSC. The aim of the trip was to study Biology and Geography, with the hope of improving their key skills for the exams and to give them a taste of working in a different environment from what they are used to.

We left Dalry at 9am and drove up to Largs to catch the 11:30 ferry.

The pupils were excited by the short  crossing to the island and for some of them it was their first time on a ferry.

The first day started off looking dull and grey but soon cleared up when we got to the base. There is an excellent view of the nearby Nuclear power station from the centre.

After settling into our rooms and having lunch, the pupils met their tutors and set of down to the rocky shore to practice their fieldwork.

The tutors explained the task and the pupils set about gathering data.

We found lots of different animals and plants of the shore and learnt how the organisms survive through their adaptations.

We then head back to the base for fish and chips. After our evening meal, we set different kind of traps around the area to see what wildlife was present in the night.

Next morning, the sunrise looked promising. We checked our results from the previous nights experiment before heading out to study soils.

Again, the tutors explained the task and the pupils got busy measuring and recording.

Soon it was time for lunch, and we returned to the base to pick up our sandwiches. We then drove into the town on Millport to let the pupils see the sights and but some sticks of rock.

Finally, we headed back to Largs for some food and then home to Dalry to recover from a wonderful trip.

The staff and pupils would like to thank Drax for a significant contribution with made it possible for many of the pupils to attend. I’m sure they will all have had an experience they will never forget,

A new term and a new project

With the new term well under way, the pupils have been settling in to their new classes. In the Wednesday wider achievement classes, some of the pupils have been learning about green engineering.

In particular they have been looking at helping wildlife by building bird boxes and scouting out locations for them.

We have been working with https://gallowayglens.org to provide materials and expertise. We are looking to continue this partnership throughout the year and we are planning more exciting projects for the spring term.
