Millport 2025

The S3 and S4 pupils have just returned from a great three-day field trip to Millport FSC. The aim of the trip was to study Biology and Geography, with the hope of improving their key skills for their assessments and to give them a taste of working in a different learning environment.

We arrived at Millport FSC just afternoon and settled into the accommodation.

The first task involved walking into Millport and measuring the beaches there to establish if longshore drift was taking place.

After dinner the pupils spent an hour in the lab processing their data and then returned to rooms to rest after a long day.

Next morning we set of to a forest in the middle of the island. We investigated whether the slope of a hill would impact the soil characteristics and the fauna in the woodland.

After lunch the pupils walked round to the rock shore where they carried out an investigation on the distribution of organisms on the rocky shore and whether it was influenced by the tide.

Again, the evening session was spent processing data.

After a fantastic breakfast on the final morning, we travelled into the centre of Millport to look at the impact of tourism by comparing two different streets and interviewing locals.

We then had to rush back to catch our ferry and managed to find time for a quick ice cream in Largs.

The school and the pupils would like to thank Natural Power for a significant contribution towards the trip.
