Last Friday the students joined up with their peers in Castle Douglas on a trip to the Royal Highland Show. A great day was had enjoying the show and making new friends. Many thanks to all those involved in the organisation of the day.

Sports Day 2019
Dalry Secondary School held its sports day this year, on Thursday the 6th of June.
There were various different events, each being separated in to year groups and genders, so each event had a section for S1 girls, S1 boys, S2 girls and so on through all of the different year groups at Dalry Secondary. The events were: 100m, 400m, 800m, shot put and long jump.
Points were awarded depending on where you placed, 8 points for 1st, 6 for 2nd, 4 for 3rd and 2 for 4th, and you were still awarded a point just for participating.
The school is divided in to two houses, Mulloch and Goodwin, with points earned in the competition going towards the overall house competition that has been going on all throughout the year. At the end of the day, the points from the sports were added on to the total house points.
There was two trophies to be awarded, the first being the Goodwin cup for the house which one the overall house competition, and the other being the Carmichael sports champion cup for the person who earned the most individual points on sports day.
The winner of the Goodwin cup was Goodwin house, and the sports champion being the Mulloch house captain. Overall the day was a huge success and hopefully fun for all who participated.
Viking jewellery and calligraphy
S2-4 continued their Hidden Histories Wednesday Afternoon Activities with calligraphy using real goose feather quills and ink made from crushed oak galls, rusty nails and tree resin. They also studied patterns and made their own designs for pewter bracelets, taking inspiration from the ones found with the Galloway Viking Hoard.
P7 Transition Trip
P7 pupil Christy writes, “On the first day of Carlingwark we went to the beach to go rock climbing. When we got to the top we could see England in the distance. Then we had to climb back down! On the second day we went in the loch and went sailing and canoeing to an underwater island. Then at the end we went swimming in the loch.”
Metal working with Cathbad the Viking
Following on from their Hidden Histories trip last week, s2 -4 learned ancient metal working techniques from Cathbad the Viking who set up his forge outside Dalry Secondary. 
Regional Athletics and Stewartry Sports
“Stewartry Sports was good as it included all the schools in the area, Dalry, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright and Dalbeattie. All the schools put 100% into all the events and the atmosphere was very good. The events consisted of sprinting and hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, 600m, 800m and team relays. Kirkcudbright were the overall winners in an event all participating pupils and schools enjoyed.
Regional Athletics built on Stewartry Sports by being represented by all schools in the region. Despite the weather, the standard of performance as always, was high. Dalry was represented well in the S3 boys long jump, 800m, high jump and relay and the Senior boys 1,500m in which we got a 3rd place. Participants agreed it was an excellent day and it is something the school will look to build on moving forward. ”

S3/4 Golf at Dalry
“Our sessions with Bobby and Dave at New Galloway Golf Course were both memorable and Educational. We really enjoyed the experience of being in putting competitions. After putting, we progressed to chipping, which was hard at first but got easier with the help of our coaches. The advice of Bobby and Dave allowed us to progress to playing on the course and combining our chipping and putting to complete some Par 3 holes. “
Quest for the Ancient Heart of Gallovidia
S2/3 pupils from Dalry Secondary met characters from the past at Threave Castle, Dundrennan Abbey and Buittle Castle on a trip put together by CatStrand and Sleeping Giants. The fun-filled trip presented the history of local monuments, and set the scene for follow-up activities this month such as craft workshops using ancient methods of metal working and stone carving (watch this space…)
Creative Writing Club
CatStrand cultural centre in New Galloway are coming in every second Thursday after school to work with a group of young people on their creative writing skills.
