Our new class pets!

Daisy very kindly offered to give us some stick insects as hers had recently had many, many babies!

We set up their new home and welcomed them into our class…it’s great fun trying to find them!

They are teaching us how to care and be responsible citizens, by making sure they are well looked after…watch this space for photo updates!

Contrasting countries: Scotland and Brazil

As part of P5/6/7’s topic work; looking at the similarities and differences between Scotland and Brazil, today we were helped by Mrs Farquhar, the Secondary Home Economics Teacher to make and taste test traditional foods from both cultures.

Many of the children were less than keen at first. Some were concerned about actually preparing the food for themselves and their peers to eat. Others were concerned about trying new tastes and textures.

By the end of the session, however, ALL the children agreed that they had enjoyed the experience a lot more than they thought they would and that the were pleased that they had challenged themselves to taste things they thought they might not like! In fact most children even admitted that they quite liked the new flavours…watch out adults, you’ll be being asked for Bean Enchiladas, Brigaderios, Cranachan, Haggis and Turnip parcels and Strawberry Shortbread next week for tea!

P3,4,5 are Bright Sparks!

This term P3,4,5 have been learning about all things ‘sparky’ for their IDL topic.

They have been investigating forces and magnets; why magnets repel and attract, their poles, magnetic metals and magnetic fields. They have also been creating complete and incomplete circuits using a variety of wires, bulbs, buzzers and cells (batteries).

P3,4,5 are ‘buzzing’ with knowledge and excitement!

Author Visit

dscn0895

As part of the annual Wigtown Book Festival is was a great pleasure to welcome another children’s author to our school. This year, Mark A. Smith came to talk to the P5/6/7 children in the cluster and it was great to see our fellow pupils from Kells and Carsphairn primaries.

Mark entertained the girls and boys by describing, with the help of some photographs, how he was inspired to write his newly published, Kelpie Book Award winning, debut novel ‘Slugboy’! Mark told us that his love as a child and even now of reading Superhero comic books helped him come up with a character. He went on to read the first chapter of his book and explain why he wanted to create a superhero, with a Scottish background and set the adventures he had in different Scottish towns.

Both the chapters, read from the book and the Slugboy song, we were all encouraged to sing helped to show how funny the book was and many children agreed that they hoped to get a copy, when it is available to buy, in the shops and online, later this month.

For those of you cannot wait though, you will be pleased to hear that a special, signed copy of the book is available to borrow, from the Primary Library!

Gardening Club – Autumn update

This term has been a busy one for the enthusiastic Gardening Club gardeners. They have been harvesting a HUGE crop of vegetables (that horse manure certainly did its job!) and tidying up the garden and front of the playground. The pots have been planted with spring bulbs of daffies, tulips and snowdrops and the welly boots emptied ready for rejuvenating next spring. There were lots of very positive comments about how beautiful the front of the playground has been looking and we need to keep this up next year for sure!

Yesterday the group harvested some local fruit trees for apples and damsons ready to make jam. This will be handed out to the elderly members of our community during our Harvest Festival and will also be sold to raise much needed funds for the Gardening Club.

Busy, busy bees!

Delightful (and not so delightful) characters celebrate Roald Dahl’s 100th Birthday!

The annual Roald Dahl day was once again celebrated enthusiastically in school, last Tuesday. Children, in all classes, came to school dressed as their favourite character or wearing yellow (Roald’s favourite colour).

Throughout the day, the children toot part in a number activities, including searching for unusual and frankly revolting items in Mrs Twit’s ‘worm’ spaghetti and working outside, hunting for items likely to be found in Mr Twit’s beard!

In the afternoon, the whole school assembled to watch a live show to celebrate Roald Dahl’s birthday, broadcast from the theatre, in London, where Matilda is currently being performed. The children learned more about Dahl’s writing craft and the characters he created.

P5-7 Triathlon Event

Pupils form P5,6,7 enjoyed an athletic morning, down in Kirkcudbright on Tuesday. They took part in the Triathlon Event; together with other schools in the Stewartry, sampling the 3 disciplines of the Triathlon.

All the children worked hard in the pool and on the running and cycling track to develop their skills. At the end of the morning everyone was tired after their exertions, but pleased with their achievements. Everyone agreed that they’d like to do more activities like this in the future!

September Newsletter

Welcome Back

I hope you have all had a relaxing holiday and are set for another busy session at Dalry Primary.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new pupils and their families to Dalry. I am sure the pupils, staff, parents and friends of the school will make you feel most welcome.

Staffing

There have been a few changes to the staffing this session. We are delighted to welcome Miss Joss who will be teaching P1/2. Ms Tranter has been transferred to Kells Primary as part of the local authority’s restructuring.

Here is an updated staff list.

Acting Head Teacher:                     Mrs Smith

Acting Depute Head:                       Mr Gray

P1/2 class teacher:                          Miss Joss

P3/4/5 class teacher:                       Mrs Devlin

P5/6/7 class teacher:                       Mrs Turner

SfL Teacher:                                     Mrs Hermon (Tuesdays)

Learning Assistants:                       Mrs Peacock

Mrs McNally

I will continue to be Acting Depute at Dalry Primary as well as Depute Head at Kells. I will be at Dalry on a Monday morning, all day Wednesday, Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

Open Afternoon

Pupils and staff invite parents to an Open Afternoon on Wednesday 7th September, from 2.30 – 4.30pm. This will give parents an opportunity to visit their child’s classroom and meet the teacher on an informal basis.

Parent Partnership Working

Teachers are always willing to speak to parents about their son or daughter’s progress in class. However, before 9 am can be quite a busy time for teachers preparing for the day ahead and for greeting pupils. Teachers find the end of the school day a far better time to meet with parents. Meetings with the teacher can be arranged by phoning the school office.

P7 / S1 Transition

There has been a change to the P7 transition programme. P7 pupils will only go to Dalry School on a Thursday morning in terms two and three.

Flu Immunisation for all Primary School Children

The flu vaccine is offered to every primary school child in Scotland. Consent forms were issued at the start of the session. Only pupils who have handed back these forms will be immunised in the coming months.

Reading Books Amnesty

Please could you have a look at home for any school reading books that have not been returned to the appropriate class teacher. Thank you.

Autumn Walk to School Week

Walk to School Week is taking place from Monday 26th September – Friday 30th September.  We would always encourage the children to walk to school if they can, but appreciate that this is not always possible.

Update Forms

Update Forms were sent home recently asking that you check the information that is held by us for your child/ren and make any necessary changes. We have received a number of these back, but not all. It would be appreciated if these forms could be returned to school as soon as possible, please.

After School Clubs

Andy Marvelley, Active Schools Coach, will run a lunchtime football club on a Monday from 12.45 – 1.15pm for interested P3-7 pupils.

Active Schools will be running the ‘Active & Achieving’ Club on a Wednesday after school at Dalry School Hall. P1-3 is from 3.30 – 4.30pm and P4-7 is from 4.30 – 5.30pm. Andy Marvelley, Active Schools Coach, will take the sessions each week. Each week the pupils participate in a different sport / activity.

Letters have already gone home for both clubs via pupil post. Please contact the school office if you would like another letter.

P5-7 pupils from Kells have also been invited to attend the Dalry Primary football after school club. It will be taken by David Steward, Dalry Janitor, on a Wednesday from 3.30 – 4.30pm. Letters will be going home this week to interested pupils.

Olympic Day!

To begin the new year, the whole school have been working together on an Olympics mini topic, this week.

each class chose a country they would like to find out about and the athletes who represent their country.

P1/2 chose Portugal

P3/4/5 chose Australia, and

P5/6/7 chose Brazil

Flags, maps, medals and even Top Trump cards have been made and in the course of these activities, we have all learned lots more about the different sports that are represented in the Olympic games.

Today, we celebrated our achievements by holding a Mini, Dalry Olympics! All the children had worked hard, at home to make an Olympic torch for our opening ceremony and each any every one looked super as they were paraded around the school field. The children then went on to take part in some Olympic events…with a twist (as you can see from the photos below!) After lunch we discussed and made plans for adapting the events for Paralympians  and had a go at trying some of these ideas out. After our Daily Mile, in the form of The Road To Rio, the day ended with a Closing Ceremony. Medals were awarded and the national anthems of the three countries where listened to. Some braver pupils even tried to sing along in Portuguese (we had less trouble with Australia Fair!)

DSCN0868 DSCN0864 olympics 090 olympics 087 olympics 064 olympics 069 olympics 071 olympics 079 DSCN0863 DSCN0861 DSCN0855 DSCN0854 DSCN0853 DSCN0852 DSCN0876 DSCN0872

By 3.25pm there were a lot of happy, but tired children. We all agreed we’d had a great day!

Now we are looking forward to 5th September and  watching the Paralympics from Rio.
