On Thursday afternoon P7’s from St Columba’s, St Teresa’s and St Andrew’s Primaries all competed in the St Joseph’s Science Fair.  It was a fantastic afternoon.  We had all sorts of experiments from testing the affect of different types of vinegar with bicarbonate of soda, testing the longest lasting lipstick, measuring the size of explosion when mentos are dropped in different fizzy juices to measuring the affects of storing popcorn in different temperatures on the number of kernels that pop.  It was all very fun and interesting.  The children presented their work really well!

P7 joined their nursery buddies on World Book Day to make puppets of the characters from their favourite books.  They have been enjoying O.S.C.A.R. (Our School Cares About Reading) on Mondays and Thursdays when they spend time reading with their buddies and helping them with their reading homework.  There are some lovely expressive readers and they take on their new responsibilities so well.  The nursery children look forward to them coming.

Today Primary 1 went on a trip to the Ewart Library.  In our language work we have been looking at the difference between fiction and non-fiction books so we thought it would be a good idea to go to the library and ask questions about how the library organised the books.  The lady was very impressed with our knowledge  and explained to us that the fiction books are organised in alphabetical order and the non-fiction by topic.

We listened to a great story and then got to choose books to read ourselves.

After the library, we got a lovely treat of juice and cake at the Doonhamer which set us up nicely for our long walk home!

Last night saw the final of the Dumfries Rotary Primary Speech Making Competition, held once again at St. Andrew’s. Our school has a proud tradition of young people performing well and once again we were lucky to have an excellent speaker representing us. Matthew talked about a Glaswegian’s perspective of Dumfries and how he is now proud to be called a Doonhamer. He was entertaining, inventive, and natural in the way he performed his speech. Although he lost out on the big prize, his performance was to be proud of and one that the audience really appreciated.

Our P6 class took part in a Knex bridge building competition in our school. There were many successful bridges built with Toby and Luca being the winners on the day.

Primary 6 certainly had a busy day today! This afternoon they welcomed parents and grandparents to their Celebration of Learning. The children worked very hard in preparation for their afternoon and enjoyed showing everyone what they have been learning. Well Done to the parents who came dressed in pyjamas as part of World Book Day and those who had a go at Cheerleading and Rugby.

Primary 6 came dressed in their pyjamas for World Book Day.

They looked so cosy and this made some of them very sleepy!

Today our school looked like a very different place, when children (and adults!) came to school in their pyjamas with their favourite bed time stories.  This was all part of our World Book Day celebrations.  In Primary 1 we welcomed Primary 6 to share our stories.   It was a great opportunity to talk about our favourite stories, settings and characters.  Here are some photos of our shared reading time.

Last Friday some of the children in our P4 class made their Confirmation along with children from the parishes of St. Teresa’s, Lockerbie and Annan. Bishop William Nolan conferred the sacrament the sacrament upon the children. The sacrament is part of the sacraments of initiation, and therefore  linked with Baptism.

Thankyou to everyone who came to P5’s Celebration of Learning. The children were so excited to share the school forest with their special guests. Well done boys and girls!
