3d Models by Primary 1

Primary 1 have been very creative when building 3d models of buildings in our local community.  We linked our work on shape with our topic on Business and The world of Work.   Primary 2 and 3 came in to have a look at our creations and they were very impressed by the way we could answer questions about the types of jobs involved in our business and name the 3d junk shapes we used to create them.

Football Stars and History Made for St. Andrew’s.

St. Andrew’s History Makers

Congratulations to our football teams who have been taking part in an SFA tournament held at the Queen of the South Indoor Arena over the last couple of weeks. As a challenge, many were competing above their age group and yet managed to do well and be competitive. History was made for our school, when an all girl team represented us at a mixed tournament for the first time. The girls made everyone sit up and take notice. As we know, they are very competitive individually and collectively. Now others outside of St. Andrew’s know how competitive they are as well.

Does anyone know of any other school that has entered an all girl team into such a tournament? We like to think that more will follow.

Orienteering for P7

On Friday 12th January P7 went to Mabie Forest and completed various orienteering courses with our outdoor education instructors, Robbie, Ian and David.  They really enjoyed the competitive element as they each competed to see how quickly they could complete the courses.  They have developed some great map reading skills and are looking forward to the next session in a few weeks time.

World of Work – Farming

Today P1, P2 and P3 had visitors from the farming world to talk about the jobs that they do and the skills they need for their work.

We had Mr Weir who sells tractors to farmers.  He brought a tractor for us to look at and we were amazed to find out the tractor cost £77,000 and has 16 lights on it!

Mr Cameron, a vet showed us different equipment he uses when dealing with sick animals.  He brought along a dog (just a cuddly one!) and showed us pictures of x-rays.  We also saw photos of animals in the vets surgery.

Mrs Nelson is a dairy farmer she talked to us about the journey milk takes from farm to fridge.  We talked about how many different things we eat daily which  are made from milk – chocolate and ice-cream being two of our favourites!

It was super to find out about different aspects of each job and by the end we had lots of people wanting to be farmers and vets in the future (we still had a few footballers too though!)

P6 help P2 with their Technology Challenge

P6 helped P2 use the K’nex to build lots of different things. The P6 were showing the P2’s how to use the K’Nex and what works well to create different models. The P6 children were very good at listening to the ideas P2 had and were able to help them work out what would be the best way to do it. Thanks for your help P6!

Information in Our Environment

Today in Primary 1 we were talking about signs and information in our environment.  We talked about how this is important  to give people information on where to go and what to do and most importantly to keep people safe.  We then went on a hunt around our school to see what information we could see displayed.  There were a great variety of signs and info.  We photographed some to show you.

St Andrew’s Sports Committee

Today our  Sport Committee met to discuss our plan for the year ahead.  We decided to focus on celebrating sporting success at assemblies, encouraging girls to try different sports and getting the opinions of our Pupil Council about sports opportunities within our school.  Our Committee members are Tomas, Sophie, Nicole and Shannon.  If you have any questions about sport in St Andrew’s please feel free to ask our Committee.

P2 Model making

Today we had a go at making our own ‘junk’ models. We have been finding out about different buildings and the shapes that we can see from these buildings and designed our own. We planned our building then decided which would be the best to create using the junk and in groups we worked hard together to try and follow the design plan. What a super job P2.
