Primary 5 Visit to St Joe’s Science Labs – Super Scientists!

Primary 5 have been learning about Changing Materials in their science focus with Mrs Kerr this term. They were set a homework challenge where they had to solve a Desert Island Dilemma, and think of ways they could separate salt and sand from water, to ensure the water was clean enough to drink.  We then visited St Joseph’s Science labs, where, with the help of Miss McCormick and Miss McGarva, they tested out their theories.

Tattered, torn tartan artefact

Primary 5/6 couldn’t believe their eyes today, when Mrs Kerr showed them a square of tartan plaid, that had been part of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s original kilt when he came to Scotland on his Jacobite Quest in 1745. They imagined him cowering underneath  it on the cold nights when he was hiding in Cluny’s Cage.

The inscription reads: ” A piece of the plaid worn by Prince Charles Edward Stuart at the Battle of Culloden, and left by him at his James MacIntosh Hall, Chief of the Clan Chattons”.

They then produced some fabulous creative writing pieces, in a genre of the children’s choice, and Mrs Kerr is looking forward to reading through some poems, imaginative stories, letters and newspaper reports tonight!

There were some extremely well matched games,  (one game being decided with just one tile difference!) .

The match between Patrycja P5/6 and Hannah P6/7 did not take place due to illness, however this will be rescheduled for later in the week.

The first Bananagrams Lunchtime Club seemed to be a big hit today, with 46 children from Primary 4/5, 5/6 and 6/7 taking part.  We managed to all squeeze into the Primary 5/6 classroom (just!) and the first competitive games were played. I will post a list of the winners from each group, along with photographs of today’s antics as soon as possible.  Big thank you to everyone who took part, and also to my volunteer referees, who were an excellent help today. Mrs Kerr

Fame at Last!! Take a look at what graphic artist Stref had to say about his recent visit to Primary 5/6!!

I have copied a recent post from the Moat Brae facebook page, which really complements the P5/6 children’s hard work, thought you might like to read it. (Mrs Kerr)

Well done to St Andrews Primary in Dumfries – you really impressed PAN by Stref when he visited to see your work on Wednesday. Here is Stref’s  story and some of his photos of the day: (Moat Brae Trust).

“As I am led through the hallway, I pass an amazing array of incredible art. The P5/6 children that I’m here to talk with have put together a dazzling array of visual creations…all based around Peter Pan, and it’s fantastic to behold. So now all I have to do is meet them!
I won’t go into details of the event, suffice it to say that I was so impressed with the children, in the hour I spent with them, that I stayed an extra hour to answer all their questions!
The experience was like a fresh breath of wind blowing through me.
Not only did we discuss Peter Pan, but J M Barrie himself, and how the story relates to his life. All I can say is ‘Well done!’ to their teacher, the class were so enthused and knowledgeable!
So then I got lost in Dumfries for a while…the Nith was WILD, and I saw the house that Rabbie passed in. I take some snaps, then it’s time for the Living Advent…a live draw event in the town centre.
Suddenly, I am surrounded by characters from Peter Pan! Peter himself (herself!), Hook, Smee, the Darling children, and the Lost Boys are all there!
Awesome effort everyone…loved it!
Even Santa is thereand he makes tea for us! But it’s his job to bring us things we want, isn’t it?
And it is Christmas…
So Merry Christmas, and a big…BIG thank you to St. Andrews School in Dumfries ( You kids were amazing! ), The Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust, The Living Advent, and The Lockerbie Youth Group…
…for a day to remember! A day I will never forget.
The next time I get a spider in the face, I will presume great things are coming!”
Stref.

Primary 5/6 Shared Learning Extravaganza!

The Primary 5/6 class recently tackled a shared homework activity, where they were to work together with someone at home, to create and design their version of Peter Pan’s Neverland. Wow! Wow! Wow! The response was fantastic!

Take a look at our pictures to see what they designed, we have everything from treasure maps, minecraft Neverlands, junk model Neverlands, cryptic maze Neverlands, not to mention a Neverland cake!  Very impressed with the all the creative ideas!

The Nursery, Primary One and Primary Two children came to talk to the P5/6 class about their models,

and their verdict was a big thumbs up!minecraft jack shared learning photographs p56 002 shared learning photographs p56 003 shared learning photographs p56 004 shared learning photographs p56 005 shared learning photographs p56 006 shared learning photographs p56 007 shared learning photographs p56 008 shared learning photographs p56 009 shared learning photographs p56 010 shared learning photographs p56 011 shared learning photographs p56 012 shared learning photographs p56 013 shared learning photographs p56 014 shared learning photographs p56 015 shared learning photographs p56 016 shared learning peter pan 004 shared learning peter pan 006 shared learning peter pan 007 shared learning peter pan 010 shared learning peter pan 011 shared learning peter pan 012 shared learning peter pan 015 shared learning peter pan 025 shared learning peter pan 026
