Flight Challenge

Today’s problem solving in Primary 3 was a little bit different.  We were challenged to create a paper aeroplane that would hit a target at a distance of 3 metres.  We had several attempts and made changes to our designs and throwing techniques to see what worked best.  Unfortunately, no one hit the target this week but we had some very near misses.  We decided we would like to try this activity again next week to see if anyone can manage to hit the target.

Outdoor Learning Day

What a busy day P3 have had outdoors on this lovely dry day!  This morning we went to the woodland area to plan our big writing using a story mountain planning grid.  The stories we then created when we came back to class were fantastic.  After break we headed back to the woods to collect natural materials for our afternoon session.

In the afternoon we worked together to create art work using natural resources.  We also calculated the area of leaves in square centimetres.  Finally, we used sticks, stones, leaves and pinecones to create our own sums.

We had loads of fresh air and I think all the children and definitely the teacher will sleep well tonight!

Hallowe’en Celebrations

Today in Primary 3 we had a super Hallowe’en themed day.  In the morning we created animated stories on the computer and built haunted houses using a range of construction materials.  We also used our creative skills in a variety of arts and crafts activities.  In the afternoon we played party games and had a ‘spooktacular’ Daily Mile outside!

The costumes were amazing, as I am sure you will agree from the photos below.

Measure Challenges in Primary 3

Today for problem solving we had to create a bridge with  a length of 30cm and height 10cm.  It also had to carry a tower of blocks weighing 20 g.  It was a fun way to practise our measure.

We also went to the woods to estimate and measure the length of sticks.  We had to find 1 stick which was appox 30cm.  3 sticks which together would measure 1 metre and 1 stick which we estimated would be about 1/2 metre.  Some of our estimates were pretty close!

God’s Wonderful World

In Primary 3 we have been reflecting on God’s Wonderful World and discussing our favourite sights and sounds in our natural environment.  In Big Writing we wrote beautiful descriptions of our favourite places and used adjectives to help bring these to life for the reader.  On Friday we went to the woodlands and looked for natural things in God’s Wonderful World which we photographed for our display.  Here are some of the fantastic photos we took:

George’s Marvellous ‘Muddy’ Medicine

Today Primary 3 went to the woods to create their own Marvellous Medicine just like George in the novel we have been studying.  There were some amazing creations including lots of mud, leaves, pinecones, sticks and the odd slater or two!  The children then wrote their ingredients and decided how many grams or kilograms of each item they would include.
