P4/5 Big writing workshop and Roman Showcase for Parents
On Thursday afternoon, parents were invited to take part in a big writing workshop led by P4/5 pupils. Parents learned about the impact of vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation (VCOP) on their child’s writing and different activities which can encourage their use in pieces of writing.
Following the workshop pupils then performed a Roman play and song to parents, bringing together their skills and knowledge developed together through this topic.

Health Week coming soon!
Pupils in the Health and Wellbeing Committee have been busy planning and organising a health week for the whole school, which will take place between 3rd-7th June.
So far activities include:
- A walking school bus to meet at the village hall every morning at 8.45am
- Daily wake up shake up routines
- A presentation by the H&W Committee on British Heart Foundation (Monday morning)
- A visit from the school nurse to talk about hand washing and sun safety (Monday afternoon)
- A visit from the Mountain Rescue Team (Tuesday morning)
- Heart Start presentations from each class (Tuesday morning)
- Sports afternoon (Wednesday afternoon, starting at 1.30pm)
- A commonwealth activity afternoon (Thursday afternoon)
- Healthy snack preparation by pupils (Friday morning)
- Skip-a-thon sponsored event to raise money for British Heart Foundation (Friday afternoon)
Our Skip-a-thon will be held on Friday 7th June at 1.30pm-3.30pm, weather permitting. The event will be differentiated as follows:
Nursery – obstacle course (pupils will keep going for 5 minutes)
P1/2 – as above with more obstacles and for 7 minutes
P3 – choose to join P1/2 or P4-7
P4-7 – skip on the spot for as long as possible to each child
We would greatly appreciate any support you can give your child with their fundraising, e.g. by asking friends and family to sponsor them. Sponsor forms were issued today (13.5.13) to all pupils. In the ‘Amount sponsored’ column P4-7 pupils could either receive a donation or an amount per minute that they manage to skip.

Our Easter Assembly
On Wednesday afternoon we had two special visitors in school, Linda Greenhill and Rev. Boyle. Our assembly began with the presentation of donations and welcome letters to Linda Greenhill who is due to fly out to Nepal in the Easter holidays. The Outreach Committee presented the donations from pupils to Linda and Abbie (P5) said a few words about how much the pupils are looking forward to beginning their link with a school in Nepal.
Following the presentation the whole school joined in singing ‘Sing out an Easter Song’, thenP6-7 gave some Easter readings from the Bible. Next P4-5 read an Easter poem they had worked on together about the Easter story and then P1-3 led a prayer which they had written themselves.
Rev. Boyle had the difficult job of judging the Easter bonnet competition. Well done to Charley (Nursery), Molly (P1), Annie (P4) and Libby (P6) who were our lucky winners of an Easter egg each!
To conclude the afternoon, the pupils had a great time hunting for Easter eggs around the school.
Red Nose Day Rocks Kirkcowan School!
Today has been great fun for Kirkcowan School pupils but we have also raised an incredible £303.89 for a very serious and worthwhile cause. Pupils, staff and parents’ generosity was outstanding. The Great Kirkcowan Bake Off was a huge success with spectacular entries from all. The four judges had a very difficult decision, however they awarded 1st Prize to Abbie and Ellis for their excellent ‘Red Nose Cake’ and runner up prize went to Fern for her ‘Cosmic Company Cupcakes’. Pupils paid £2 to enter the bake off and sold their baking at the end of the afternoon. Most pupils in the school dressed for a ‘Bad Day’ day for a donation of 50p.
Pupils Enjoy Performing at Galloway Music Festival
P1-3 and P4-7 pupils went along to perform at the music festival this week. P1-3 dressed as pirates to perform ‘I am a pirate captain’ and thoroughly entertained both the audience and judge on Monday morning. Very positive feedback was given about the pupils’ singing and enthusiasm. P4-7 performed ‘Harvest of Love’ in a competitive group music making category. The judge commented the following:
“You were very well organised across the stage. The solo voices were secure and the choir of voices had very clear words. The instruments were played well to support the musical outcome. This was very good work. Well done!”
The pupils were awarded a “Commended” mark for their efforts. All pupils represented the school exceptionally well both in their behaviour and attitude towards the experience. Well done!
On Wednesday afternoon pupils from across the school performed their music festival pieces and Scots poems to members of the Autumn Club. Nursery gave a confident performance of ‘Ma Wee Rid Motor’. The Autumn club had a very enjoyable time and stayed for refreshments following the performances. They generously gave a donation to school funds which is very much appreciated.
World Book Day Activities
The whole school dressed as their favourite fictional characters on Thursday to celebrate World Book Day. During class in the morning pupils worked together to try and come up with a list of ‘WOW’ words that they could use to make their own writing more exciting. This list of words will then be available for pupils to use in class from now on.
After lunch P6/7 read out some prepared extracts from books they thought nursery would enjoy and P4/5 read to P1-3. Then the whole school split into house groups and completed three activities which were as follows:
1. Acting out charades of popular children’s books for others to guess
2. Making up story middles and endings from a given starter
3. Completing a treasure hunt by working out cleverly worded clues
The finale was the judging of the fancy dress competition. Below are the winners: Keira (Nursery) as ‘Queen of Hearts’, Kendra (P1-3) as ‘Tinkerbell’, Amy (P4-5) as ‘Dorothy from Oz’ and Abby (P6-7) as ‘Gandalf ‘.
In P1-3 Finlay won the competition to design a new front cover for his favourite book ‘The twits’.
To end the afternoon, nursery gave a lovely performance of ‘Puff the magic Dragon’. A great time was had by all.
History comes alive in School!
On Thursday primary 4-7 had another welcomed visit from ‘History Alive’. This time World War II and Romans were the focus. Pupils heard lots of fascinating facts and got to handle different artefacts and replica items.
