Cooking in a Castle

Today in class we tried lots of different meats that would have been eaten by noble men and woman living in castles 500 years ago. We tried rabbit, hare, pheasant, pigeon and deer.

We made flat breads using Jamie Oliver’s recipe…

although perhaps a little less salt!

Traditionally flat breads would have been used like a plate except this one could soak up your gravy and you could eat it.

We also tried some fruit chutneys unbelievably these were not as popular as the meats!

Most of the pupils tried out the now rarely eaten foods – pigeon was found to be the favourite.

A big thank you to Mr McKeown for providing the meat for our tasty castle banquet!

Medieval Food,Entertainment And Now And Then

On Tuesday the 11th of  February 2014 our whole school was learning about medieval time subjects such as food that they ate, entertainment and now and then. For food we learnt that they ate rabbit, hare, pigeon, dear and pheasant . We also made our own flat bread. They were all very devine,! My favourite was the rabbit but many liked the pigeon. For entertainment we saw that they did jousting, sword fights and for birthdays they had big feast. In our time we play iPads PS3, Xbox , phones Ect. From then until now we learnt quite a bit. We learnt that they did not sleep on beds the slept on hay, straw or the cold floor. They used the chamber pot for the toilet and they shout gardyloo. We really enjoyed learning.

Stunt Duck

Stunt duck has 3 different stories. They are Stunt Duck,  Roll up! Roll up! and The sing song gang. My favourite story was Stunt Duck. I liked it because Stunt Duck flew into the wall. He did a loop to loop and his loop to loop failed. This book is a bit different because it has 3 short stories. You should  give it a go.

Castles Sieges!

At Hollywood this week we have been continuing learning all about castles. P3 and 4 made a humongous castle in the classroom for the role play corner. P1 and 2 made castle pictures using paper, and our cutting and tearing skills, with Mr. Parkhouse. We have also started building some castles outside – with sandstone!! They are going to be big enough for people to fit in. We have been working in 3 groups – hopefully enemy castles won’t attack us. We now know lots of facts about castles. Zak has learned that there were 2 different types of motte and bailey. Ethan learned that they had to build castles by hand. Logan knows they didn’t have any flushing toilets! Hayden learned that the servants in the castle didn’t even get baths – they had to go in the river!
We are excited about making shields and swords next week, and maybe finishing our castles. We are also going to visit a real life castle.

Robert The Bruce And All That

This is a spine tingling adventurous book. If you read this book there will always be a surprise waiting for you around the page! If  you don’t know who Robert the Bruce is, he was a brave war hero who also became king on New Years Day 1306 25th  March. This date may sound like it is all wrong but in Bruce’s day the Scottish calculated the dates from something called the Julian calender and New Years Day was on 25th March.

Spelling Letter To Spiderman

To spiderman

I hear that you suffer from arachnophobia. I will advise going to the pharmicist to get tablets or if you have physical problems get physiotherapy. It might be a phobia. Its a phenomenon to speaking to you.
