The Ration Challenge At Holywood

Today at school we held the ration challenge!!! Everyone had to pick a wartime recipe to prepare and make and then you go to taste them. There were 2 groups for toad in the hole (Ryan, Greg, Erin, Me, and Ebony, Euan, Ethan and Dakota), 1 group for oxford soup (Georgia, Gavin, Paul and Jack), there was another for corned beef fritters (Isla, Merissa and Hayden), and the last group made bacon in a pie (Lewis, Kye, Charlie and Dylan). To make toad in the hole you need a hole bunch of ingredients. It was really fun. It took an hour and 10 minutes to make. After they were ready we got to try them! The toad in the hole was delicious and so was the oxford soup and the bacon in a pie. My favourite ones were oxford soup and the corned beef fritters. I would absolutely love to do this challenge again!!!

Learning At Holywood

In Primary 5-7 we have been learning about WW2. We made model planes to represent the Messerschmitt (German fighter plane) and the Spitfire. We also made backgrounds for them by getting some A3 paper and using oil pastels to recreate the view of the ground from the planes and we have hung the planes above the oil pastel drawings. We are also hopefully going to be doing the ration challenge. My group will be making toad in the hole.

We have started a new thing that we do on Monday mornings. It is called a reading and writing carousel (I think). There are 4 groups; Blogging, Reading, Newspapers and reading box card. On the reading box card you have to complete the whole card in 15 minutes and it is the same with everything else. On the newspaper you have to read the newspaper and then write 5 questions for someone. On blogging you blog and on reading there are 4 books called Blitz, The boy in the striped pyjamas, The last kids on earth and Adolphus Tips. I am reading the boy in the striped pyjamas and I am on page 101.

On big Thursday last week we went up the woods with Miss Stapleton and took pictures, then we came back and wrote poems about the woods and what we could touch, hear and smell. We then got hot chocolate and marshmallows! With Mr Walker we did cricket in P.E. With Mrs McIntyre we did pop art in art and with Ann we did music. Ann is our new music teacher and she is very good.

Snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today Holywood got loads of snow! It snowed all morning with thousands of snowflakes at a time!!! It snowed in the middle of the night and everyone woke up to snow in their gardens and immediately realised that it would be a snow day at school! At school everyone has the sledges out on the hills and are making snowballs to have snowball fights with! We don’t get much snow in Dumfries and Galloway so everyone is overjoyed when we got just the tiniest little snowflake that you can imagine. My opinion on snow is that it is very cold but very good to build things with.

Dylans opinion of snow: “I like it but it can be very cold when you don’t wrap up warm!”

Georgias opinion on snow: “Its cold!!!”

Miss Dales opinion on snow: “Its cold but I like it.”

School Show

This years school show was called Mystery at Magpie Manor. There were lots of fun parts to audition for and I got the part as Lady Pica. I really liked being this character and I was glad that I got to sit backstage for the first time because I was a main part. The other main characters were Grandmamma played by Georgia, Lord Pica played by Paul, Scribble played by Sonny, Blot played by Greg, Inspector Spectre played by Isla, Agatha Christie played by Dylan and Mr Buttress played by Gavin.

The first night I was really nervous but on the second and third show I wasn’t as nervous.

Week In The Woods 2017

This year in Week In The Woods we did lots of things. On day 1 we made new dens practically all day. We came for lunch though. After lunch the seniors stayed and did a salt water challenge. That is were you have to try and drain the salt out of the water but manage to collect the water. You have to try and make the water fresh instead of salt water.

Day 2 was also fun. We had made chocolate oranges. Literally. We made chocolate cake mix and put it inside the orange once the inside had been cleaned out. Then we cooked it and ate it. Don’t worry the inside of the orange was eaten. We also made more of our dens.

Day 3 we had to make nettle soup. We picked the nettles with gloves on but some didn’t.

Day 4 a lady from the Scottish SPCA came to the school and talked about animal welfare. Then we ate our nettle soup and it was nice. Then we went back to the woods Mr Law came and we played sardines and manhunt. Mr Law was very good at hiding and only Charlie K found him.

Day 5 we made marshmallows!

Newsround This Friday

On Newsround today

  • Dolphins!!!!!
  • Pelicans!!!!!!
  • Black Holes!
  • Niagra Falls Trick!
  1. A pod of Dolphins were filmed jumping around in the sea catching fish. These Dolphins were filmed from above for more than 2 hours!
  2. Lots of Pelicans are becoming ill because of a type of algae that grows under the sea. Small amounts of the algae are not that bad for these sea birds but Pelicans have large diets so they scoop up lots of the algae. When the birds are ill they are taken to a wildlife reserve and given a swimming pool to chill out in. When better, the birds are released and they fly out to sea.
  3. Scientists in China have constructed a machine to help astronomers/themselves to find out the behaviour of black holes. The machine s launched into space and there the stars when they are sucked in, give of an x-ray and then the machine will show it to the scientists/astronomers.
  4. A lady got a certificate from the Guinness Book Of World Records for dangling higher than anyone has ever been before. She performed tricks without even a harness! She was then lowered down to the ground from the bottom of a Helicopter and released from the rope that held her hoop up.

If you want to check out Newsround yourself then head to CBBC on the T.V or CBBC website.

Renewable Energy Animations

The Seniors have been working on Renewable Energy Animations with Miss Findlay. The results are amazing! Here is how to make one yourself:

  1. First you have to get a bunch of paper and pick your Renewable Energy Source.
  2. Secondly you have to draw pictures that match your source. For example a picture of the happy wildlife if you are doing Fossil Fuels.
  3. Now you have to colour in your images.
  4. After a while of colouring in you can take pictures of every drawing 3 times.
  5. Now you have to go to PowerPoint
  6.  After you get onto PowerPoint you start inserting your pictures onto each slide. You may need a lot!
  7. Finally after putting in the pictures you need to save your work.
