Holywood Art Gallery

Yesterday we opened the largest collection of art we have ever had at Holywood Primary School. With over 50 local artists showing work (some of them for the very first time) it was a feast for the eyes for our parents and families.

The pieces were varied with some pupils re-creating the masters such as Picasso and Van Gogh. Others choose street artists such as Core 2 and Lady Pink. Sonny selected a Scottish artist Ken Currie who produces some very sombre work – dark!!

Thanks to all who visited this 24 hour pop-up art gallery. We have taken lots of photos and will get pupils to post about it next week.

We may also try to get some of our work in the local press.

Art work will be coming home over the next couple of days – enjoy!!

The Homework Debate

Today in class we discussed homework. Pupils completed a PMI chart on the subject of Homework. They put down the plus points, the minus points and asked and Interesting questions about homework.

Most pupils know that homework allows them to share learning with home, improves their skills and moves learning forward.

Most pupils felt that they spend a long time working in school.

We discussed the difference between homework at primary and secondary. Some pupils with older siblings told us that that homework gets done because of the consequences  – pupils with de-merits for not doing homework miss out on school trips!

Funnily enough, the pupils who complete homework thought this was a good idea. The pupils who do not complete homework did not like the idea.

Two of our pupils informed us that their older siblings don’t do the homework or cheat.

Is this really moving learning forward?

Trying out a New Look!

Mrs Jardine has suggested that it is time to update the look of our blog.

When we thought about it  – the last time we changed the look of the blog was in 2012. Some of our pupils weren’t even born then!!

Mrs Jardine is right – we are long overdue for a change!

I have had a wee play to see how easy it is to change things – what do you think?

Bye for now,

Miss Dale

Joining Team Holywood

Holywood is a very nice school. It is amazing. I like that all the pupils are very nice to me.

It is different because there are less pupils. I work with lots of teachers.

On a Thursday we work with four different teachers. One for art, one for Outdoor skills, one for PE and one for music.

My favourite part of Big Thursday is going out to the woods.

Learning

This week we made puppets.

We learned about pirates – we made pirates and we wrote pirate stories.

We read a story about pirates.

Some of us climbed trees in the playground as part of the Lava Game.

Erin played on the metal bars.

Daniel played sword fights.

Abigail’s favourite thing this week was making a pirate with Miss Stapleton.

Jack liked Outdoor Skills with Mr Walker.

Story Map

We made a story map for Red Riding Hood.

It had a hill and paths in the forest. We made cottages for all the characters.

We used the map to tell the story with our puppets.

STOP POLICE

Today we had the Police in school (not really!) This Policeman made lots of arrests and made sure P1/2 were behaving.

Holiday!

Thanks to Paul and Hannah for sharing their holiday highlights – it would be great to hear from others.

Thank you to everyone who wrote a holiday diary – we are reading them at the moment.

We are BACK!

Hello!

Welcome back to Holywood.

We hope you all had a great summer.

I chased the sunshine in my camper van…

And found it in Wales and on the East coast of England.

I look forward to catching up with everyone very soon.

Look out for our first social – a wee meet and greet so that you can grill / I mean have a chat with our newest staff members.

Thank you for getting organised for BIG THURSDAY at short notice.

Have a good day,

Miss Dale
