Here is my email to President Biden about Drilling for oil in the Arctic circle.

Dear Mr President,

Congratulations on becoming president, I hope Champ and Major are settling in well to life in the White House.

I am writing to you to say that I think you should invest in more research and trials of renewable energy (Solar, Hydro and Wind) in the Arctic, rather than giving more licences for drilling oil in the Arctic circle.

Drilling and extracting oil are having an adverse effect on the environment and already struggling communities in the Arctic. Here are some of the ways it has a negative effect on the region:

  1. It causes displacement of wildlife.
  2. It causes pollution of often previously pristine environments.
  3. The consumption of oil adds to climate change.
  4. It also affects indigenous people’s ability to hunt and live in traditional ways.

Drilling for oil might provide more money and jobs for communities for a temporary amount of time. However, I believe renewable energy can do this in a more economical, environmental and socially sustainable option.

Yours sincerely,

Joe.

  1. Hi Joe,
This is awesome – you pack in the facts whilst being concise – something that a busy president would appreciate! You have offered an alternative solution. Your vocabulary is specific, so your meaning is clear and precise. You have shown you understand the other side of the argument, but in your summary you have shown why your point of view is more valid. You are also friendly (offering congratulations and mentioning Champ and Major!).

If I am being REALLY picky, you didn’t need to say “I am writing to you to say that” because if Mr Biden receives an email he knows you are writing to say something. But that’s a very minor point. 🙂

I’m so impressed with your work, if you could add a short paragraph to say why someone in Scotland is bothering to email the President of the USA, I will SEND IT to President Biden, Joe! We are not from the Arctic OR from America, but it does affect Scotland. Can you say why?

(If any other children would like to do this task by Friday, I’m happy to send them all together!)

  2. Mrs Fraser – No I can’t ! I’m very excited that my letter might be read by Joe Biden! Us sleepy Joe’s need to stick together!

Mrs Armstrong, I’ve made the changes you suggested, in anew post – let me know if you think it is ok to send

  3. Hi Joe, Sorry I missed your reply before I commented on your next post. Absolutely – I will send it for you on Friday.

  4. If that letter doesn’t propel Mr President into action, I don’t know what will, Joe.
I like how you highlight the long term damage to the environment and ecosystem, long after the drilling companies have come and gone; and the communities are left with rivers they can’t fish from, grounds they cannot grow food from, and forests they cannot hunt from.

    Well done!
