As part of our learning about Chinese New Year, some children chose to make special red ‘lai see’ envelopes which Chinese children receive at this time of year with a gift of money inside. It was tricky to work out how to make the envelopes stick together but the children showed good perseverance with this little problem and enjoyed decorating their envelopes. Hopefully the chocolate coins that were put inside made their way home.

Noah’s Ark
As promised after our visit to his church, Rev. McGougan visited Nursery last week to tell us the story of Noah’s ark and it was lovely to have several parents and younger children joining us, especially as it was Hecklegirth Open Day. Fortunately we had our own ark out as part of the play so some of the children were able to help Rev. McGougan tell the story by putting the animals in the ark when we came to that part of the story. Thank you to Rev. McGougan for taking time out of his busy week to spend time with us – it’s much appreciated.

Sunshine Church Visit
The Sunshine Room children had their visit to Rev. McGougan’s church last week and enjoyed learning all about the church and what happens there. Everyone was interested in the beautiful Noah’s ark so Rev. McGougan has kindly arranged to come in to Nursery to talk to the children about the story. Thanks again to all those parents who accompanied us on our visit and to Rev. McGougan for giving us so much of his time. We look forward to his visit soon.
Visiting Our Community
As promised, here are the photos of the afternoon children visiting Rev. McGougan’s church this week and we are looking forward to the Sunshine Room paying a visit on Tuesday. Thank you to those parents who helped us by accompanying us on our outing – we greatly appreciate your help.
Church Visit
As part of learning about places in our community we started our term off with a walk to the United Reform Church this week. Rev. McGougan kindly invited us to his place of work to explore the building and learn what happens there. We found out what different objects in the church are used for and learned a little about its history. The careful climb up the staircase led to the upper part of the church where found out about the pews having been made from a shipwreck and were able to get a super view of the whole of the church.
Rev. McGougan also told us about lots of different groups that meet in the church hall through the week including a group that plays indoor curling. Children and adults alike all had a turn at aiming the curling stone at the target which was great fun and we finished off our visit with a look in the garden where Rev. McGougan showed us the beautiful birds that live there in big cages.
Thank you to Rev. McGougan for making us feel so welcome and to all the parents who came with us on our very interesting outing. Here are the morning children on their visit. We will post afternoon photos soon.
Chinese New Year Snack
As part of our recent discussion about Chinese New Year, we talked about the types of food Chinese people might eat and the children were given the opportunity to sample some Chinese foods at snack. As you can see, some made a good attempt at using chopsticks and most were confident to try the noodles, sauces and prawn crackers on offer.
Thank You
Paulina’s Mum left us a comment when she saw the photos of her telling the children about Christmas celebrations in Poland:
“That was very nice time with children. Thank you very much for that, special for beautiful songs for me. Monika. (paulina’s mum ) xx”
We really enjoyed learning about your family celebrations and are glad that you enjoyed the children’s singing.
Polish Christmas
Recently the afternoon children were lucky to learn first hand about Christmas in Poland from Paulina’s Mum and it was very interesting to find out about the traditions that are similar and some that different to Christmas in Scotland.
The children were surprised to learn that Santa visits children in Poland on December 6th with a small gift then returns on the 24th with their main present. They often have beetroot soup with pasta to start their Christmas meal which is on December 24th and they usually have fish as the main course rather than turkey like many people in Scotland. Paulina’s family, like most Polish families, always has an empty chair at their table for their Christmas meal in case a stranger calls and wants to join them.
We all loved hearing about Paulina’s Mum’s Christmas traditions from the past and present and would like to thank her for helping us to learn about Christmas in another country. We hope that she enjoyed the songs that the children performed for her by way of a thank you.

Nativity Gift
Nursery now has a beautiful set of knitted characters from the nativity story thanks to Hannah and her family. The children have loved playing with them, which they can do without fear of breakages, and it has provided a great opportunity to talk about the Christmas story. Thank you so much to Hannah and her family for this kind gift which we feel sure will be popular in Nursery for many years to come.
Thank You
Thank you to all those children and their families who kindly donated to our Harvest collection. We feel sure that all the food will be much appreciated by Annan Food Bank. Many thanks also to Rev. McGougan for joining us in Nursery for our Harvest celebration.
We really appreciated your fantastic support in providing a wonderful audience for the children today. It was a lovely opportunity for us all to gather together to celebrate Harvest and we hope that you enjoyed the children’s performance as much as they seemed to. One of our aims is to develop ‘confident individuals’ and many of our children showed themselves to be exactly that in their performance. Well done boys and girls!
