What do you think of the artist’s work?

As part of our learning about Autumn, we have looked at some of the work of the artist Arcimboldo. We looked at his portraits of “Summer” and “Autumn” to see how he used food to depict the seasons as faces then we used food to make our own portraits. Here are some our comments on Arcimboldo’s paintings. Examples of our own work will follow soon.

Katie: I like the Autumn one. I like the potato.
Liam: an artist makes pictures. I like the “Summer” Arcimboldo picture best ’cause he’s smiling on his picture.
Abbi: I like the leaves on the “Autumn” one.
Hayden: I like the “Autumn” one. His nose is funny.
Nate: the artist’s called Arcimboldo. The pumpkin is funny on his head.
Emily: I like the cherries on the picture.
Adam: I like the “Summer” one. I like all the stuff that’s hiding in his hair.
Olivia: I like the “Autumn” one. The “Summer” one looks colder.

“We Painted Matchstick Men …”

As we have been learning about the buildings in our community and thinking about what happens in them, we decided to take a look at some of the work of the artist, L. S. Lowry. It was great to see his paintings on our new Promethean board and we had some interesting discussions comparing the buildings he portrayed with the ones we see in Annan. We thought that the painting of the schoolyard, in particular, was very different to our school playground.

As well as singing along to the song “We Painted Matchstick Men and Matchstick Cats and Dogs”, lots of children were keen to participate in making a street scene similar to Lowry’s work. Some lovely charcoal drawings were also produced to add to our display.

Kandinsky Chat

This week we found out a little about the artist, Kandinsky. It was quite tricky trying to say his name and some of us just called him “Kandy” which was a bit easier. A few children thought he looked as old as Robert Burns and wondered if they knew each other because both their pictures looked old.

Once we had made our painting in the style of Kandinsky, we talked about our work and compared it to Kandinsky’s painting. Here are some of our ideas.

  • It looks like snow’s coming down and it’s raining with red and blue.
  • They look like pizza shapes.
  • It makes me think of rainbows. It’s quite like Kandinsky’s.
  • They look like colourful holes.
  • They are kind of different ‘cause we have different colours of paint in Hecklegirth.
  • You can put other colours on top of colours to make it different.
  • Everybody’s done lovely colours that I like.
  • It looks like a rainbow swirl.
  • It’s the same as his but kind of different colours.
  • I think thunder’s coming down.
  • It makes me think they’re lovely.
