Tree Planting

Last year we recieved a bundle of ‘twigs’, which we put into a nursery bed to enable them to develop a healthy rootball over the winter months. Today (Wednesday 1st May) we planted them out in our school grounds. Mr Colin Hossack who works for the Forestry Commission( and is Tara’s Dad)  came and gave us a short talk about the importance of trees and all the associated wildlife and habitats that revolve around them. He then demonstrated  how to plant the little trees and protect them from rabbits with mesh guards which he brought along for us to use. The pupils in P5,6,7  then managed to get many of the plants in the ground, and hopefully they will grow eventually into strong healthy trees.

Pony Express !

Hometime on Friday for Mollie was a bit of a surprise ! Mum, Katie had decided to take advantage of the nice weather and arrive at school on horseback,(on Maisie), along with Mollies miniature Shetland pony, Rosie, on a lead rein, all tacked up and ready to transport Millie home. When the bell went at 3.00pm and the classes were relaeased this event caused a great deal of interest and after Mollie got into her riding gear, mum and daughter trotted off up the hill with several of the other children still standing watching. In the picture below you can see Mollie all ready to go.

Introducing Hector

A very special new person has joined Hardgate School. He came with no name, but is a very cuddly wee person – and now the boys and girls have had a vote and we call him HECTOR !  Hector had a jumper and four scarves knitted for him by our dinner ladies and each week on a Friday he will have a change of scarf. The scarves are knitted in each of the 4 colours of our house teams, and whichever team has the most points in a week, then Hector will have to wear the colour representing that team. Falcons-blue, Hawks-red, Owls-green and Eagles-yellow.

Money Matters

Children in P.3 to P.7 have been learning all about budgeting and managing money. This very important skill has been delivered by Pam Fraser, Financial Education Training Officer and Bev Wilkinson, Financial Education Officer. Pam and Bev are employed by Dumfries and Galloway Council and deliver a very important aspect of money management to equip us for life. All sectors of the community are catered for and age relevant material is used to educate the recipient audience with a view to helping make money stretch for all of our needs. Budgeting at an early age educates children into hopefully becoming responsible adults when it comes to dealing with money matters, and aid a life long planning strategy and understanding for all financial needs. Emphasis was put on NEEDS and WANTS, and an activity to furnish a bedroom on a budget was completed with the help of the Argos web-site. The children were very enthusiastic about both sessions of money matters.

K-NEX challenge winners.

Holly and Lauren are our P6 winners of the K-Nex challenge at school level. They now go on to the next round to compete aginst the other cluster school winners to aim for the regional final. They are seen here with their model of a piece of playground equipment. They had to think about the structure, stability, safety and the suitability for children to use. Well done to Lauren and Holly

It’s SNOW fun – and no school !

An extra long weekend for pupils here at Hardgate, due to huge amounts of snow and drifts, proved to be fun all round. School was closed on Friday 22nd and Monday 25th of March due to the non-stop snow from early on Friday and all the way through to Saturday. This was followed by major drifting problems causing roads all round about us to be blocked. On monday morning we had help from the council to clear all our accesses and allow pupils to return to school on Tuesday. We all took advantage of the snow to have fun as this is really quite an unusual event here to have so much.

‘Magic’ , pays a visit to school

 The children in our nursery have been having a ‘Wacky Week’. As part of this week they arranged to have a visit from a magician, and invited the rest of the school to join them for the magic show. We were entertained with a variety of tricks and magic which held the children spellbound. Just like every magician, the show included a white rabbit and it made it’s appearance at the end.

Toy Time.

P.3,4,5 have been learning about forces and energy. Part of their homework has been to design a toy that required a force to make it work. Can you identify the force that each of these toys in the photographs below would need to make them work properly?
