The test on the Space topic will be during the week after the February break. As usual, nice kind Mr Wood is providing you with revision notes that cover the main ‘knowledge’ bits of the topic. You also have all the work in your jotter to revise from. Remember the advice you were given about active revision – Read – cover – note – check, underlining / highlighting key words, construction glossaries etc.

The final part of the space topic is to look at friction – a particular problem when space craft re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere.

1D3 and 1G3 have been modelling the solar system to get a better idea of what distances are like in space. Working in pairs, pupils had to produce coloured scale pictures of their planets, including any other structures such as rings. The planets were then stuck up along the science corridor with all the distanced from the window (sun) worked out to scale.

1G3 and 1D3 have been working in pairs to present research on a given planet. They were asked to show a drawing, find some number data and investigate features such as atmosphere, gravity moons and rings. Some of their presentations are shown below –
Mercury deserves special note. This was done by Karol in 1G3 who joined the school from Poland in September, speaking hardly any English. Four months on, this presentation is a fantastic achievement of which you should be really proud!

A number of sites on the Space topic have been added to the list at the bottom right of our blog site. All of these are at the right level for S1 pupils and will help in researching planets and astronomy. They are also the jumping off point to other more advanced sites if you want to follow any information through.
Following the big bang, swirling clouds of helium and hydrogen formed stars. The stars then collected into billions of galaxies of billions of stars. Our galaxy is called the Milky Way and our sun (Sol) is one of of its stars.
We have now been looking at the planets and other bodies that make up our solar system.
We have learned the names of the planets and the order that they lie in from the sun. We looked at a memory trick to help remember the right order. We are now researching the individual planets to find data and facts about them which we will present to the rest of the class.
