Planet research

1G3 and 1D3 have been working in pairs to present research on a given planet. They were asked to show a drawing, find some number data and investigate features such as atmosphere, gravity moons and rings. Some of their presentations are shown below –

Uranus Neptune Mercury

Mercury deserves special note. This was done by Karol in 1G3 who joined the school from Poland in September, speaking hardly any English. Four months on, this presentation is a fantastic achievement of which you should be really proud!

Space sites

A number of sites on the Space topic have been added to the list at the bottom right of our blog site. All of these are at the right level for S1 pupils and will help in researching planets and astronomy. They are also the jumping off point to other more advanced sites if you want to follow any information through.

Our solar system

Following the big bang, swirling clouds of helium and hydrogen formed stars. The stars then collected into billions of galaxies of billions of stars. Our galaxy is called the Milky Way and our sun (Sol) is one of of its stars.

We have now been looking at the planets and other bodies that make up our solar system.

We have learned the names of the planets and the order that they lie in from the sun. We looked at a memory trick to help remember the right order. We are now researching the individual planets to find data and facts about them which we will present to the rest of the class.

Test warning

1D3 and 1G3 will be due the test some time week beginning 16th January. During the next week, both classes will be issued with revision summary sheets in case work in jotters is incomplete. We will also be looking at how to use these sheets and the work in jotters to revise most effectively – taking notes, highlighting, read – cover- check.

Homework

1D3 are due homework on Thursday 12th January. This is Q2 and 3 on the Healthy Bodies Homework sheet. Answers go on the sheet.

1G3 have already been issued with Q1 and 2, and Q3 will be due in on Monday 16th January.

Hmework sheet was included in a previous post, so there are no excuses about having lost their sheet!

Pulse

1D3 have been working on taking pulses. We took pulses using two different methods. We used our fingers to feel for a pulse at our wrist or neck. We counted the beats in 20s and multiplied the answer by 3 to get the beats in ine minute. We also used a hi-tech pulse meter which was quicker and more accurate. We learned why a doctor would take your pulse and what it might mean if it was too high or too low.
