Reading may be an essential tool for life, but it should also be for enjoyment. The school has a well equipped library and online reading materials that children can access and use at home as well.
Reading the Menstrie Way
All children are working on a variety of reading activities to build technical reading skills (fluency and expression) and to develop their comprehension and higher order reading skills. Each week, children will take home a selection of reading books. (One group reader at their level, one library book and a chill book). Chill books are slightly below their reading level and are there for enjoyment and to encourage a love of reading.
Reading Comprehension
It is vitally important that children are able to understand what they are reading and respond to questions which test their comprehension of the text. To do this, we work through a variety of activities, games and challenges to engage learners in their texts. Building this strong foundation to literacy can mean that class reading books may appear lower than the types of texts they can decode at home, but it is important not to rush this.
