Read, Write, Count

readwritecount

On Wednesday 23rd November, Primary 1, 2 and 3 children all received their Read Write Count bags from the Scottish Book Trust.  We held a special afternoon  where each of the children were ‘gifted’  their bag by Mr Patterson.  Lots of parents came to join us and they joined in with reading the new stories and playing the games contained within the bags. We all had lots of fun learning and playing with our parents and even got to enjoy juice and a biscuit as a special treat.

Thank you to all those parents, grandparents and carers who joined us – we hope you had as much fun as we did.

Deerpark D.E.A.R

On Wednesday 26th October we had our first ever Deerpark D.E.A.R time where everybody “Dropped Everything And Read”. Although individual classes often incorporate time for “reading for enjoyment” in to their timetables we thought it would be nice if there was at least once a week when the whole school was reading together (including all members of teaching and non-teaching staff).

This event was hugely successful and all of the children were really positive about the experience. Primary 2 were delighted when Mrs Bernard came in to their classroom to join them and liked seeing her read her book too. Mrs Kelly (PT) visited the Primary 3 and 4 class to read her book. There is already great excitement about which classroom our Senior Management Team may choose to visit next Wednesday.

There was a real buzz around the school at the end of the 15 minutes and lots of talking between the children about the books they had read. We are already looking forward to next week.

First Minister’s Reading Challenge

On 1st September the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon in cooperation with the Scottish Book Trust, launched the ‘First Minister’s Reading Challenge’. The challenge is for Scottish school children in Primary 4-7 and is intended to encourage reading for entertainment and to promote a life long love of literature.

There are a range of challenges to encourage children to go on their own reading journeys, explore different types of books and celebrate personal reading achievements. The Reading Challenge aims to support schools and communities to develop reading cultures.

The First Minister’s Reading Challenge will run from September 2016 until May 2017 and there will be a celebration event in June 2017, where good practice from across the country will be showcased and prizes awarded. Details of the various challenges can be found here.

This week all children in Primary 4-7 will be provided with their own Reading Passport in which they can track their ‘reading journey’. Updates about our progress throughout this challenge will be shared at regular intervals.

More information for parents about the reading challenge is available on the reading challenge website along with some hints and tips on how to promote reading for enjoyment at home.
