The Design

Link this to our topic (John Muir), what did we think about/consider when brainstorming ideas and designs?  Go into each in detail.  How did we pick two?  What did we do after we picked our designs?  Then go into making the turtle body, hexagon vinyl for the body.  Plastic bottles for the bumpers.

We were working towards our John Muir Award in term 3 and we were looking at air pollution, deforestation and how much plastic can ruin the environment.  That’s why we want our Kit Car to be made using recycled materials so we can raise awareness and help the environment.

In term 4 we started to think more about the Kit Car. Mike came in with a presentation on what is involved in the kit car project with examples of previous years. Using the awards as a stimulus and current environmental issues we started to note take and write/doodle our designs. We got a sheet which we used to plan our Kit Car design, the sheets looked like this:

Car-Body-Work-Design

We had certain criteria that we had to think carefully about before drawing designs. Overall we wanted something unique, light and eco-friendly:

Materials used: Not too bulky, thin and easy to mould/bend.  Things we thought of were wood, grass, crisp packets, laminated paper, cotton wool, coke cans (although our school has done this before).
Weight: It had to be lightweight, as to not slow the car down.
Colour/design: We want something eye catching and unique.
Shape:  Round at the front to help streamline the car.
Eco: Recycle goods as it wont cost us much and also good for the environment.

There were lots of designs such as clouds, trees, cows, Minnie mouse and a school design to name a few.

But the winning designs chosen by a working group of six pupils and two teachers were:
DRUM ROLL PLEASE!!!!!!

A TURTLE (two groups, drew a turtle design that we thought was current and would look amazing!)

The materials we used were: for sale signs because they are light and quite bendy and they were recycled, we also used vinyl to decorate it since it’s really light and it looks nice. We are using pool noodles for the bumper because they are light and bendy. For the head we are using a balloon because it shouldn’t add that much weight and it will make it look like a turtle.

The whole class decided to call the car Tangled Turtle.

Look at our finished car!

We think this design is eye catching and something that we haven’t seen in our research.  Hopefully it will catch the judges eye too.
