Compare the Supermarkets – Spicy/Hot

Today’s maths challenge is related to our ‘Money’ theme.  You will be given a shopping list and challenged to find the best value online supermarket.

A minimum of 2 supermarkets should be selected, however if you wish a slightly HOTTER challenge you can, of course, choose more.

Instructions and a shopping list are contained in the Sway.

Ensure that you stick to the guidelines, and keep an eye open at all times for any special offers, such as ‘3 for 2’ or  ‘Buy-One-Get-One-Free’ as these offer good value for money.

Remember to post your results on Seesaw or write them in your jotter, and come back to the Blog to tell us how you got on!

Mild – Numeracy – Coins

Some more money activities for you to try

Twinkl – Order the coins

Twinkl – Make each amount using coins

White Rose Maths – Money

Making coins

Watch this film to learn about how the Royal Mint make coins.

This film was made before the new £1 coin was introduced.

The new £1 coin

Can you count how many sides the £1 coin has?

What do the pictures on the back of the coin represent?

Why did the £1 coin have to be redesigned?

Time for a story.

‘It’s a No-Money Day’ by Kate Milner

In the second film the author of ‘It’s a No Money Day’, Kate Milner, reads her book and spends time discussing her choice and style of illustrations.  She makes some very interesting points about the illustrations to help the reader empathise with the main characters.

If you would like your child to practise reading aloud I  think it might be helpful to turn down the volume and scroll through the video from page to page.

Symmetry Activities

The following Sway contains a variety of activities for you to practise identifying and creating symmetrical shapes.

Symmetry is all around us – both at home and in the environment – we just need to keep our eyes open and be aware of it!

Have a look at my Sway and try out some of the activities.  Don’t forget to come back and let me know how you got on.  🙂

MILD: Numeracy – Shadow Puppets with Shapes

The pictures of your drawings that some of you have sent in look amazing.

It is really interesting how a collection of simple shapes can look like an animal.

Today we are going to do the same with our shapes.

By grouping shapes together in a certain way you get an outline of a line that goes all the way around. When you have these grouped shapes all together in one colour it has a special name…Do you know what it is?

They are called Silhouettes.

Today we are going to create some simple silhouettes and cast their shadow out in the grass to imagine they are in our jungle. You can also set up a torch indoors and play with your shadow puppets.

Follow the Sway below to learn more…

Remember to send in pictures of your work to your teacher through email or seesaw.

MILD: HWB & Art – Symmetry in Nature

Did you all enjoy your symmetry walks last week?

The pictures you sent in were great some went exploring on their walks and some hunted around their bedrooms.

Today we are going to look at symmetry in nature and complete a painting activity.

You may have to make your own paint, which I found really fun, as I had to be curious and try and make my own colours.

Follow the Sway below to learn more…

Remember to share with your teacher through seesaw and email.

MILD: Numeracy – Building Animals using Shapes

Last week we reviewed and extended our knowledge of Shapes. This week we are going to using our knowledge to apply it to an art task.

Some of you have already sent in your drawing following the video on the grid, Well Done!

Today we are going to look at identifying the shapes we need ourselves to create a simple shape drawing.

The sway below gives you ideas on how to identify the shapes you need to create an animal.

Most of the examples only use, Squares, Triangles, Rectangles and Circles. By used differently every time we can create and fish and a snake with just a few changes.

Discuss with family why you are using a certain shape as a neck, or arm or elbow rather than another shape. What qualities does that shape have that makes it the best shape to use?

Have great fun and on Wednesday we will extend this further and create some shadow puppets in the grass.
