Mild – Numeracy – Coin Design

How many different types of coins, denominations, do we have in the United Kingdom?

Which coins were missing?

Listen to this song to check which coins were missing from the last song.

Keep practising how many 1ps, 2ps, 5ps and 10ps you need to add together to have the same amount as a

  • 5p

If you are confident with this practise counting how many 2ps, 5ps, 10ps, 20ps and 50ps you need to add together to have the same amount as a £1 or a £2 coin.

Mild Numeracy – Giving Change

Mental Maths warm up!

Keep practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to help you count amounts of money quickly.

Many of you have set up your own shops at home.

Your customers might not bring the exact amount of money so you need to learn to give them change.

Warm up – Take away facts!

You might like to try some of the questions on these sheets

Making coins

Watch this film to learn about how the Royal Mint make coins.

This film was made before the new £1 coin was introduced.

The new £1 coin

Can you count how many sides the £1 coin has?

What do the pictures on the back of the coin represent?

Why did the £1 coin have to be redesigned?

Time for a story.

‘It’s a No-Money Day’ by Kate Milner

In the second film the author of ‘It’s a No Money Day’, Kate Milner, reads her book and spends time discussing her choice and style of illustrations.  She makes some very interesting points about the illustrations to help the reader empathise with the main characters.

If you would like your child to practise reading aloud I  think it might be helpful to turn down the volume and scroll through the video from page to page.

Mild – Literacy and Exp Arts – An ending to dance to!

What a fortnight of Tiger Tale writing!

  • You have prowled!
  • Found the main character in your story.
  • Been surprised!
  • And now have a problem in your tale!

Time to write the ‘Tail’ end of your story.

How will the problem be solved?

What type of ending will you choose?

  • funny
  • sad
  • surprising
  • happy

What type of ending have I chosen?

Did you expect that?

The mermaid and the tiger danced till dawn!

Let’s dance to celebrate your fabulous Tiger Tales!!

Mild – Reading – DCA Shorts ‘Tiger’

Every week, since schools have closed, Dundee Contemporary Arts, DCA have been sharing short films from the children’s collection for their annual Film Festivals.

I was delighted when the DCA team shared the film ‘Tiger’ last week. Perfect timing!

(Short films and animations are a type of text that we share and talk about with your children, in a similar way to picture books.)

After watching ‘Tiger’ talk about the questions below.

There are many surprises and problems; funny sound effects and a great ending to discuss. Talking about this might help you when writing your ‘Tiger Tale’

The DCA have also shared the activities they designed for schools.

Take a look! Tiger Activity Pack

I wonder what designs you have on your plates at home?

What might happen if they came to life?

Mild – Literacy – Tiger Tale Middle

I loved reading the beginning of your ‘Tiger Tales’

Let’s think about the middle of your story.

  • Who might appear?
  • What might they look like?
  • What problem might they have?
  • How do they feel because of this problem?

Mild – Art and Design – Sculpture

Last week we tried to create a collage inspired by Henri Rousseau and the educator at the National Gallery.

Then later in the week we had a go at building a a 3D collage, a structure that stood up. This can be called sculpture.

Learn more about sculpture from the gang at Sesame Street!

I had a go at making some tiger sculptures.

I wonder what you might use to make a sculpture

Mild – Literacy – Tiger Tale Beginning

I have loved seeing your pictures of you out on the prowl searching for tigers, feeling leaves, looking at shapes, describing sounds.

I think we are ready to write the beginning of our Tiger Tale!

This is a paper version of the tail sheet.

This is the spelling sheet Mr Mutch and I shared with you for writing with.
