STEM Family Challenge

logo

It is with regret that we have had to postpone the STEM Family Challenge.

The EDT (Engineering Development Trust) and BP are running a STEM Family Challenge event at Northfield Academy on Thursday 28th May 2015 from 19.00 to 21.00.  Please arrive from 18.30 onwards for refreshments and be ready to start promptly at 19.00.

Students and families are invited to take part in a fun evening event which has been designed to raise awareness and show families of all abilities, some of the courses and careers available in Science, Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) as well as give them the opportunity to work in teams with their families on an exciting ‘hands on’ activity where they will have an opportunity to win a prize and a trophy. The family teams will be made up to include at least one student and one adult (parents/ guardians/ family friends and/or teachers) and refreshments will be provided on the evening. No prior knowledge of STEM is required.

The evening is focusing on STEM career guidance by giving students a taster of STEM in its broadest context, demonstrating how this fits into the ‘real’ world of work and the pathways available to them. The event aims to enhance the learning experience by raising aspiration and motivation whilst promoting the ongoing study of STEM. Families will have the opportunity to meet people from STEM related industries/ courses and take home information about the range of jobs and routes in these sectors.

If you are interested in taking part in the STEM Family Challenge, please contact  A Dow or A Dean at Northfield Academy.

EDT is an independent registered charity which includes First Edition, Go4Set, Open Industry, The Engineering Education Scheme, Headstart and Year in Industry. These programmes are designed to enthuse and motivate young people and encourage them to fulfil their potential through careers and courses in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths www.etrust.org.uk.The EDT is a partner organisation of Tomorrow’s Engineers.

We very much hope that you will participate in the STEM Family Challenge evening and look forward to hearing from you.

A letter has been sent home with pupils with a tear off slip. Alternatively, staff can be contacted on the numbers below:

Higher Revision in a Nutshell

The National Parent Forum for Scotland have produced new Revision in a Nutshell guides for the new Highers (20 subjects) and updated Revision guides for National 5s (20 subjects).

These revision guides contain direct links to SQA specimen question papers, exemplar question papers plus past question papers, where appropriate. They are designed as digital resources and work well with iPads or other tablets.
The guides advise learners to check with their teachers to make sure that material is relevant. The guides are primarily intended to provide the SQA direct links by subject in one place, and to give some additional revision opportunities (if relevant) which are web-links to school pages or to the websites of subject-relevant organisations.

Easter Bulletin

The Northfield Academy Easter Bulletin is now available to download.

This bulletin is packed full of more success stories from our pupils. It has been another very busy term, and for our senior students the next two months are going to be even busier. As a school we must continue to strive to improve exam results; last year saw significant improvement but continued hard work must lead to further improvements this year. Teaching staff have again been offering additional study opportunities and we are pleased to report that a number of pupils have been taking up these opportunities. We would urge you to make sure your son or daughter is taking
full advantage of these sessions.

We would like to wish everyone a good holiday and a very happy Easter.

Great Scottish Scientists

S1 pupils at Northfield Academy worked on a cross curricular project to research a Scottish Scientist and turn their research into a short comic. Working with our fantastic Patrons of Reading Metaphrog, and inspired by the enthusiasm of Allan Burnett (author of “Invented in Scotland”), this short film documents the journey the project has taken so far, showcasing the work pupils produced. The project was supported through the Scottish Book Trust Live Literature Fund and organised by School Librarian Mandy Wilson.

BBC School News Report 2015

DSC_0081

For BBC School News Report this year we traveled all the way to North East Scotland College so that we could use some of the technology they have to help us throughout the day.

Our Team this year consisted of; Erin, Caitlin, Rachel, Hayley, Lanya, Jordan, Amy, Josh, Joe, Rebekah, Brittany,Cameron, Nicole, Jake,  Mr Rae, Miss Darroch and Miss Smith. Fiona Stalker from the BBC came back to help us this year and many students from North East College helped out too. The staff and students allowed us to use their television and radio facilities, which was a great insight into the college courses as well as being able to produce good stories to publish.

The day was very busy, from our 8:30 start all the way to our 16:00 finish. With news coming from Pittodrie, Aberdeen City Council and even from Alex Salmond’s car! The day was full of events which kept us busy, although it was a rush to get things done: just like a real news room. BBC School News Report was really fun this year and being able to use equipment at the college was better for the quality of our work produced.

The day was a great success!

We would like to thank everyone who took part this year, it was great! 🙂
