Statoil helps students prepare to become “Heroes of Tomorrow”

Months of hard science by budding young students at an Aberdeen school came to an end yesterday when they presented their projects at TechFest last week.

TechFest’s Heroes of Tomorrow event, sponsored by Statoil, had pupils from S1 to S6 from Northfield Academy give short presentations to their families and peers on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Sarah Chew, managing director of Techfest, said: “Statoil’s Heroes of Tomorrow programme is closely aligned with Techfest’s aim to engage young people in the four main STEM subjects.

“Statoil’s aim is to encourage them to go on to follow a career which utilises these skills by demonstrating that they are fun as well as relevant in day to day life.

Gunnar Breivik, managing director for Statoil Production UK, said: “It is very important to Statoil, and to the wider oil and gas industry, that we attract the next generation of scientists and engineers.

“Through the TechFest Heroes of Tomorrow event, we’re pleased to support these talented young people from Aberdeen and the north-east.”

Students presented projects on a variety of topics, not just in relation to the oil and gas industry but also to geothermal energy, space and time travel, and DNA.

Breivik added: “We hope this experience will encourage them to build on their passion and knowledge of STEM subjects and strive for future success in this area.”

SQA Examination Success Evening

On Wednesday 18 March 2015 from 6.30-7.30 pm we will be hosting a SQA examination information evening. The purpose of this event is to ensure that both pupils and parents/guardians are clear of exactly what is expected in the lead up, during and post SQA examination in 2015.

During this evening there will be a presentation from a member of the Guidance team who will go over our ‘Study Support Raising Attainment’ booklet. There will also be a presentation on what is expected from the school and the SQA to ensure pupils are prepared and in a position to fulfill their potential.

Archiving the 3rd Don Crossing

A team of pupils from both Northfield and St Machar Academies are archiving the development of the 3rd Don Crossing in Aberdeen.

Once a month, the team will be visiting the construction site and building a portfolio of images and videos archiving the construction of the bridge.

Earlier this month, they braved the snow and met with Project Manager, Ken Brown, who gave a detailed insight into the overall process.

Welcome

This year, Northfield Academy will be participating in the BBC News School Report on 19th of March.

Since 2007, BBC News School Report has been giving 11-16 year-olds across the UK the opportunity to make and broadcast their own news. This film helps explain more about the project and how it works.

With support from BBC staff, teachers can use lessons plans and resources from the School Report website to help students create their reports.

And on the annual News Day in March, all the students work to a deadline, producing and publishing their content onto their school’s dedicated webpage, which the BBC links to, giving their stories a real audience.

New School Website

website

The Northfield Academy website has a new look!

This new website is cleaner, faster and generally better than the old one.  As it is run through GLOW, it will be easy, in the coming months, to add pupil and staff as users,  so that they can add news as it happens!

We are still linked to Facebook and Twitter, so any news we post here will still update

Go4Set Success

On Wednesday 11th February six S2 pupils won the Aberdeen City and Shire Go4SET competition.

Since November Miah Allan, Jordan Cobban, Caitlin Scollay, Glen Christie, Kyle Worrall and Jordan Rait have been working in their own time to complete the challenge.

The team were tasked with designing an Eco Hotel, they carried out research into where their hotel would be, what itwould be built from and furnished with (that would be environmentally friendly) and how they would power their hotel. The pupils used this information in a formal report, as well as designing a model of their hotel and posters for a display.

During the finale the pupils presented their design to the judges and faced ten minutes of questioning. The team received £250 for the school, a trophy, a framed certificate and are invited to attend the national final in Edinburgh in June.

Each member of the team will receive a silver CREST award for their contribution to the project.
