On our return from the summer break we will be working hard to get pupils into the habit of removing outdoor jackets, hoodies and non-uniform items off whenever they are in the school.

PE Kit

All pupils are expected to bring with them a change of kit for PE lessons. PE kit should include a complete change of clothes including a top and bottoms.

Pupils who forget kit will be issued with fresh laundered kit for that lesson and will be marked as no kit. This will also mean pupils will require a bag for PE kit but also for school work and their homework planner which each pupil will receive on the first day back.

On Tuesday 22th August, first day back all our new S1 pupils should arrive in school using the main school entrance and report to the main hall. From Wednesday 17th August all pupils will not be allowed to use the main door.

Finally can I thank you for your ongoing support of Northfield Academy.

Northern Lights Celebration Event

On Wednesday 25th May, Robert Gordon University hosted the second Northern Lights Celebration event. Northern Lights is a program run for Northfield Academy by RGU. The aim of the program is for S1 and S2 pupils to experience university and inspire them to consider higher education in the future.

This year the S1 group learned about what university is and what it can offer, one thing that stuck out for one pupil was toast club. They visited the school of Architecture and were hands on in a number of activities including building castles out of cards and stop animation. For the final S1 session pupils discussed careers and personal qualities, after matching qualities to careers pupils began to think about the qualities that they have and what they may be able to do with them in the future.

The S2 group visited the RGU campus three times this year, each time visiting a different faculty and experiencing a wide range of hands on activities. In engineering they created complicated circuits, in media they made radio and tv clips and at the health faculty they tested their balance when working with physiotherapy students and lecturers.

At the celebration event some pupils shared their experiences of the program, then guests got to see some of the activities for themselves with pupil helpers to share their expertise. Guests also got the opportunity to tour some of the RGU faculties. Before the group was brought back together for some presentations. S1 pupils received a certificate and a Northern Lights hoodie. S2 pupils who had completed the program received a scroll and a Northern Lights Class of 2016 pen.IMG_0097

Mr Neil Hendry – Head Teacher

As we come to an end of another term I would like to thank you for all your support.  I have taken the decision to reduce our end of term bulletins to two a year, one at Christmas and one at the end of the summer term.  We plan to change the format of the next bulletin which will be out in July 2016.

Our S4, S5 & S6 pupils are very busy working towards their SQA examinations in May and a large number of our pupils have been attending extra study sessions and will be at our Easter Revision School on Monday 4thand Tuesday 5th April.  We would like to wish all our pupils the very best of luck in their forthcoming examinations and please remember hard work and sacrifice, will lead to improved results.

It has been another busy term and there have been a wide range of events taking place, including, Lip Sync Battle, SQA information evenings, 60th Anniversary planning, BBC School News Report Day, RGU wider access events and many other events and successes.  It is certainly good to say good bye to the dark, cold mornings and look forward to the warmer, longer days ahead, we hope!

Congratulations to our Youth Work Development officer, Colin Lemmon, who won a 2016 National Youth Worker of the Year Award for “Supporting the Curriculum for Excellence and Attainment” at the annual Youth Link Scotland Awards Ceremony held at the Crown Plaza in Glasgow.  Well done Colin.

On Friday 18th March our new Northfield Academy Tartan was registered on the Scottish Tartan register.  Our Tartan, part of our 60th Anniversary celebrations will be launched at our Celebration of Success Evening on Wednesday 15th June 2016.

Sadly at the end of this term, we say goodbye to Miss Arlene Gilleran from Target Support who is moving to Kintore Primary School.  We wish Miss Gilleran the very best in her new role.  I am also delighted to report that during the last month we have made a number of new staff appointments to the school.  Miss Rachel O’Connor, Home Economics; Miss Laura Barrie, Maths; Mr Brian Duncan, Chemistry and Miss Rachel Craig, English will all be taking up permanent posts in August 2016.  We are delighted that all our probationary teachers have all chosen to stay at Northfield and congratulate them all.

We have also appointment Mrs Elaine Sutherland and Mr Ryan Nicol to the Target Support Faculty both will be starting with us on Tuesday 3rd May.  Miss Sheonagh Henderson and Miss Cheryl Wills will be joining us in the Art and Design department from August 2016.  Last but by no means least Mr Calum MacArthur joining the Maths department in August 2016.
