Week beginning 12th November 2018

This week is a four day week for the children – Monday to Thursday. Friday is an in-service day for staff only.

We will be walking up to Kincorth library on Wednesday morning after break.

Letter Sounds

This week our letter sounds are g and o. Letter g homework should be completed for Wednesday and letter o homework should be completed by the following Monday.

Common Words

Please continue to revise the first 12 common words on the word wall in the white book. Words for this week are so and had. Please complete the common word homework for Thursday. You may need to help your child to write the number after counting the words together. They can now also try to write the words.

Reading

The children will get 2 new books this week. They will have heard the extended story in school so may be able to tell you more about what is happening in the pictures. Encourage your child to look at the words or point to them as you read.

Word Pots

The children still have the main character names in their word pot. Kipper, Biff, Chip, Mum, Dad and Floppy.

Maths

This week we are continuing with our 2D shape – circle, square, rectangle and triangle, drawing, recognising, making patterns and looking at their properties.

As part of our Big Maths we do CLIC sessions in the class which at this stage of Primary 1 only involve C – counting and L – learn its.

Our learn its for this term are 1 + 1 = 2 and 2 + 2 =4.

These are facts which the children have to learn and remember. The first ones we do are the doubles so the fingers on each hand can be used to demonstrate the fact.

We will be revising these learn its a lot throughout the rest of this term so we are ready to move on to the next ones in the new year.

Week beginning 5th November 2018

This week on Tuesday the children are having their photo taken for First Class in the newspaper.

Poppies are on sale all this week – 50p.

Letter Sounds

This week we are revising our last six letter sounds c/k, e, h, r, m, d. For homework use the letters in the envelope at the front of the pink book to make simple 2/3 letter words such as red or her. Please write the words you make on the sheet in the pink book for Friday.

The children will now be moving onto the books with words. These will go home on a Monday and a Thursday so they will get 2 new books each week. The children will have heard the extended story in school so may be able to tell you more about what is happening in the pictures. Encourage your child to look at the words or point to them as you read.

Word Pots

The children still have the main character names in their word pot. Kipper, Biff, Chip, Mum, Dad and Floppy. These can be used along with the reading book to match up the words. Other words related to the reading books will start to be added to the word pots now. These can be used in the same way or to play find the word games or to create short sentences such as Mum and Kipper.

Maths

This week we are continuing with our counting, ordering, recognising number dot patterns and finding missing numbers on a number line. We will also begin to write the numerals and learn the correct formation for these.

Week beginning 8th October 2018

We will be going to church on Friday, the last day of term.

School finishes for the October break on Friday at 3pm. We return on Monday 29th October. Hope you all enjoy the holidays.

The children will get one more reading book this week with pictures only. Books with words will be started after the holidays.

Every week in school the children will be introduced to two common words. These will be revised daily and displayed in the classroom. Our aim is for the children to recognise and be able to read the words. They can be reinforced at home by completing the common word homework for Thursday each week. Words for this week are me and and. You may need to help your child to write the number after counting the words together.

Reading

Reading books will continue to be changed daily for the books with no words, except on a Friday. The children will hear the extended story in school and can retell the story to an adult at home. Remember to refer to the reading letter, and ideas for questions are inside the front and back cover of the books.

Maths

At the moment our maths work is mainly oral. We have been listening to Number Zoo stories related to the numbers 1-10, counting aloud together and individually and matching and counting in games on the computer. We have also been looking at the shapes of the numbers and what they look like so we can recognise a number symbol out of sequence.
