Aims
Multicultural Education is a cross curricular dimension which reflects many cultures
and experiences of minority ethnic, cultural, linguistic and religious communities within
Scotland and the rest of Britain, and makes children aware of cultural traditions other
than their own across the world.
This establishment aims to create a multicultural environment by:
• Creating opportunities for children to develop self awareness and self
development.
• Developing positive attitudes to themselves and others.
• Developing self confidence and self esteem.
• Providing a multicultural curriculum by creating awareness that the celebration of
cultural and religious festivals is important in people’s lives.
• Planning backdrops/themes about cultural and religious festivals and reflecting on and valuing differences and similarities to other people and cultures.
• Ensuring that resources in all curricular areas offer positive images of a wide variety of individuals and groups.
• Ensuring that resources are checked for bias, stereotyping and discrimination in all areas of the curriculum.
• Ensuring that any racist incidents, injustice or prejudice will be dealt with positively and constructively by staff.
• Recording all such incidents or remarks carefully.
• Building effective partnerships with parents/carers and the wider community.

The Childcare and Education Worker has received formal training on Celebrating Diversity. The Childcare and Education Worker utilises booklets such as “Playing in Harmony” and “Respectful Educators – Capable Learners” as reference tools. Other resources such as snack and dressing up are used to add to the Multicultural Curriculum in that the children are learning to celebrate other cultures by preparing and eating their food and dressing up for different multicultural celebrations. The children are encouraged to make displays and listen to multicultural music on a regular basis.
Monitoring and Review
It is the responsibility of the Head of Centre along with the staff to monitor, evaluate and review the above arrangements and to adjust them according to need.
