As part of Port Ellen Primary P6/7’s rainforest topic the children entered an international essay competition organised by the Living Rainforest for the Earth Summit in Rio this summer. The children had to write a persuasive letter to the UN Secretary-General to persuade world leaders that the rainforest is worth protection and why they should promote sustainability to protect it.
This letter brought together all the work that the children had done on the rainforest, endangered animals, indigenous people, logging and other threats to the rainforest and the implications that cutting down the rainforest has on climate change and the planet.
Five children – Eilidh, Ewan, Jason, Ellen and Emily – received Honourable Mentions for the essays they had written. Finalist included children from all over the world.
Mrs Macdonald shared their success with Mike Russel, Minister for Education…..and he may visit to congratulate the children in person.
