Reading

Reading is an important lifeskill and is a key priority and focus to attainment and learning and teaching at Glencoats. We make sure that we PRACTISE our reading skills every day (Predict, Retrieve, Ask/Answer questions, Clarify, Think/visualise, Infer, Summarise, Enjoy). We also use Renfrewshire’s Dive Into Reading Approaches. Our Marvellous Reading Challenge encourages children to read more. Pupils learn to talk and listen to each other through many opportunities to work cooperatively, engage in discussions and debates, perform/talk to an audience and to listen and respond to texts and media.

We also have a Marvellous Readers Challenge with children rewarded for all the reading they do. Have a look at our launch video.

Here is some parent information about what we do.

Writing

Writing is another key priority and focus in relation to attainment in the school. Children are encouraged to take part in regular ‘Have a Go’ writing which is low-risk and where they can write freely about topics of their choosing to practise their skills. They will also experience different genres of writing

  • Personal (writing about own experiences)
  • Functional (writing for a purpose)
  • Imaginative (developing own ideas and thoughts).

Listening and Talking

Our children are encouraged to listen and concentrate, to take part in talk activities with confidence and respect for others and to express themselves through many different writing activities.

Handwriting and spelling are encouraged through daily practice.

Modern Languages

Learning other languages enables children and young people to make connections with different people and their cultures. In Glencoats Primary, two Modern Languages are taught. The main language taught across the school is French, with children in upper school also receiving a block of Spanish.

Working together to reach for the stars.
