16th June 2023        Primary 6W Blog

It has been a very busy few weeks in P6W.  Here are a few of the things we have been working on;

  • We have been continuing our topic on Space. We have been learning about how gravity works on our planet and on other planets in our solar system.  We have been researching star constellations and making our own constellation torches to help us recognise the more common ones we can see in the night sky.  Ove the next few weeks we are going to be learning about the life cycle of a star and finding out more about “The Big Bang Theory.”
  • In literacy, we have been working on our longest piece of writing yet. We are creating our on Sci – fi story using a selection of story starters to inspire us.  Once we have finished writing the story we are going to redraft it on the laptops.
  • In numeracy we have been reviewing, revisiting and revising number work from the beginning of the year. This includes lots of words based problems. Over the next few weeks we are going to be using our budgeting skills to plan a holiday for Mrs Welsh and her family.
  • In Maths we have been developing our understanding of symmetry. We have been learning about rotational symmetry and will be investigating tessellations over the last few weeks of term.
  • As part of our Fitness Fortnight Tasks we have been preparing for Sports Day by practising sack, egg and spoon, wheelbarrow, piggyback and three legged races. We have also been working on Athletics Skills and learning the rules to Rounders.
  • In art we have been creating clay model sheep as part of our competition entry for this year’s Royal Highland Show. We are keeping our fingers crossed for a rosette.
  • As part of transition week, we had an opportunity to spend some time with our new teacher, Miss Smillie. We shared information about ourselves by creating a “Two Truths and a Lie” poster and by writing a letter of introduction.
  • We have spent some time with our buddies over the past few weeks. We visited them at nursery but also spent some time during transition week, showing them how to play safely in the playground and sit nicely during snack time.
  • We celebrated success at the Cluster Cross Country race where we had a first place boy and third place girl.

Last Monday we went our school trip to Helix Park. We had a picnic lunch and some of us saw swans. We got time to go to the park and we ate our snack there before we started to play football. We got ice cream at the end of the day and it was amazing.

On Thursday as a special lunchtime we got to go to Windyknowe Park. While we were there some people were playing on the field at football and some were playing in the park.

Transition took place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Our new teacher is going to be Mrs George and we will also get Ms Brody on a Wednesday. For transition we made our class charter and we made it to look like electronics to show we are in charge of our life and our decisions. We also made book marks and talked about our spinning reward wheel. The rewards will be for the winning table.  It might be things like lunch with Mrs George or break with Mrs George when you get hot chocolate. If you don’t want to pick from the wheel you get to choose from the mystery box. During transition we also had to complete maths questions and the answers gave us colours to use to complete the picture.

In transition we did got to do some activities outdoors. There was football and tennis.

Transition went well and we are looking forward to Primary 5.
