The children have been very busy leading their learning in the ELC. They explored puddles by creating their own fishing game as well as their own rods by using sticks.  This has led to lots of discussion and sharing of information about fish and where they live. Through a small group V shared his knowledge of divers as he spoke about them feeding the sharks. Mrs Keast provided real scuba diving equipment for the children to explore. E said “They wear flippers (finns) and big suits (dry suit), goggles and a snorkel.”  The children have enjoyed participating in the rhyme `five little fish` to go along with our learning.

The children became very excited when the ice and snow came in the nursery garden. While exploring the ice, G said “It’s solid and cold, the ice was very thick.” Some of the children used the ice to create patterns in the snow along with comparing the patterns from their welly footprints. They also discovered various ways to melt the ice, C said “Break it up using a paint brush.” G said “The ice melts from hot water or salt.” We will continue to explore the changes in the weather while outside.

During our outdoor learning the children have now moved on to making tea and coffee. The children used real tea bags and a spot of milk to create a lovely cup of tea and coffee. While doing this we have been exploring the language of measure full, empty, big, medium or tiny as children collaborated together to make the perfect tea/ coffee in the mud kitchen. We will continue to explore the language of measure in nursery, and if you could help your child explore this at home too. Who is the tallest in your family?

Happy New Year everyone! We have had a busy start to the year and the term.

In Literacy, we have been focusing on the Scots language, learning lots of new vocabulary. We have been reading Scots poetry and even wrote our very own poems using the Scots vocabulary that we have learnt – this was lots of fun! We also explored The Tiger Who Came to Tea and used this as a basis for writing our own narratives.

We have begun our new topic, Scottish Wars of Independence and we are working hard to plan, rehearse and eventually perform a class assembly all about our topic in the coming weeks. We hope to see lots of you there!

In Maths, we are learning all about time, including the days and months in a year, the seasons and reading from an analogue and digital clock – we have really enjoyed this topic so far.

In Numeracy, we are moving onto multiplication and division and we are really enjoying learning our times tables through active games, including Around the World, it’s one of our favourites!

It’s Languages week soon and we have lots of exciting lessons to look forward to including decorate your door competition… France is our country of choice and we can’t wait to get started on planning and decorating next week!

Literacy:

In literacy, we have been learning about Greek Mythology.  This has been our comprehension and writing focus since we returned after Christmas.  We have written our own myths and legends and we will be submitting some entries to Armadale Academy to be included in a cluster project novel, along with some Greek mythology artwork.

Numeracy:

In numeracy, we have been learning about square and cubed numbers, the square root of a number and prime numbers.  We have used our knowledge to complete very complex word problems and problem solving scenarios.  In maths, we have been finding the area and perimeter of different objects using our multiplication skills.

IDL:

We are very excited about our P5-7 show!  We are already learning our lines and songs.  We all have an important role to play in the show and we are busy designing stage backgrounds, stage directions, props and choreography to go along with our section of the show!  We can’t wait to share it with you on Thursday 16^th March!

We are also taking part in a social enterprise project.  We have decided as a year group to have a juice bar in school.  This will be a non-profit organisation with the proceeds going to a charity of the children’s choice.  A group of P7 pupils will be taking part in a Dragon’s Den event at Howden Park Centre to try and get funding to start our project.  We have worked together in groups to create a business model, logo, slogan and name for our juice bar.  Details will be shared with you soon!

Other Achievements:

We organised and ran another successful coffee morning to raise money for our Galaday float.  Thank you to all who donated baking and came along to support us!

O –I have enjoyed learning about the Greek Gods and Goddesses.

B – I’ve enjoyed doing square numbers because it is fun to learn a new way to do something in numeracy.

E – I liked learning how to find the area of an object in maths.

J – I think our learning has been more creative this term.
