P6W Blog – 24th September 2021

Our highlights from the past two weeks . . .

I liked when we wrote descriptions about our mythical creatures and designed our fairy doors in preparation for creating a “Windyknowe Fairy Trail” in the woodland area.

Last Friday I really liked when we created geometric patterns using straight lines and we also really liked the Lady McNessie art.  We shaded, used oil pastels and pencil; it was so much fun!

We also created multi media presentations on the Dechmont UFO landings in groups of two or three. Some people even managed to visit the sight of the landing during the September weekend.

P6W       Blog Update  September 2nd 2021

Numeracy and Maths

In numeracy, we have been doing lots of rounding.  We have rounded millions and also made questions easier by rounding which is also known as estimating.  In Maths, we have been learning time durations and working out times between certain points. We have been improving our mental strategies by joining in with daily number talks.

Literacy

In literacy, we chose whether to write a recount of the Summer holiday or writing a letter to Mrs Welsh about ourselves. We have been developing our story writing skills by discussing and practising writing a sensory description using “The Firebird” as inspiration.   We enjoyed this.  In reading, we have been given new reading books and we have read a little bit and discussed what we’ve read each week.  In Grammar we have been learning to use speech marks and other types of punctuation in our writing.

IDL

Our topic this term is Scottish myths and Legends.  This week we have been learning about the Loch Ness Monster. We gathered evidence and had a class debate on whether or not we believed that the monster existed.  We are looking forward to finding out more about local UFO sightings and planning/ creating  a fairy trail for the school gardens and wooded area!

Health and Wellbeing

In Health and Wellbeing, we have been learning about child rights. Mrs Welsh gave us photographs of different children in our table groups and we had to decide if we thought their rights were being met or denied. We had to be careful not believe any stereotypes of people.

PE

During PE, we have been learning about stamina.  On a Monday we do Boot Camp.  For doing that we set up 7 stations and we get 2 minutes to work at each station.  We write down our scores so we can see how well we are doing each week and if we improving.  On a Tuesday, we practise our running, particularly relay racing.  Last Tuesday, we got into groups of 4 and we did lots of races, practising a crouch start.  This Tuesday we were practising a baton handover.

RME

In RME, we have been learning about Buddhism, the story of Buddha and the story if his life.  We have also been learning about some symbols of Buddhism such as the lotus flower and the eternal knot. We had a go at making paper lotus flowers and tracing drawings of the eternal knot.  In the story of Buddha we have been learning about how he found the path to enlightenment.

Art

In art we have been learning how to draw a well proportion portrait. We discovered that the distance between your eyes is the same as the width of your eye and that the length of your nose is the same as the width of your eye!   We have been using this information to draw portraits of the school staff. This week we will be learning how to shade our portraits.  We have also been learning how to Zentangle which is a mindful way of doodling.

Spanish

In Spanish we have been learning how to say “Hello” to different people at different times of the day and we have been learning how to ask someone what their name is.  This week we will be learning to ask how someone is feeling.

Class Caterpillars

Mrs Welsh told a story about the caterpillars in her garden.  She wasn’t very happy with them because they had eaten all her vegetable plants. We were interested in the caterpillars so she brought some in for us to watch going through their life cycle. We decided that the caterpillars are our new class pet.  We really like them as they are quite cute. They are green  and enjoy nibbling the Broccoli leaves Mrs Welsh brings from her garden.
