Week beginning 07/11 – P7me

Literacy:

In literacy this week we have continued to look at information reports. After previously researching and finding out about the celebration of Black History Month, we are now looking at key activists, such as Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela, as well as significant events, such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This week we wrote newspaper reports on a significant event which are now displayed on our wonderful work wall!

Numeracy:

In numeracy, we have been looking at converting between fractions and decimals. We have been focusing on understanding decimal place value, converting between fractions and decimals, and simplifying fractions in their simplest form.

Topic/IDL:

This week was our last week of our Air Race Challenge. We created poster presentations about an influential and innovative figure in aviation. We have examples such as Sally Ride and The Wright Brothers, who we also looked at through comprehension. We looked at aspects such as their early life, personal achievements, and how they have influenced the world of aviation.

Other Achievements:

On Friday this week we performed our Remembrance Day Poppy Assembly to the whole school. Our leadership team then went to the poppy memorial with Mrs Angus, to sing our remembrance song and recite a poem.

Numeracy

We have started our Maths Transition LIVE sessions with Mrs Lundenberg from Armadale Academy.  These will take place every week and will help to enhance our numeracy and maths skills in preparation for transition.  In numeracy we have been learning more about Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.  This will help us during our Financial Education focus later next month as we look at converting currencies, working out interest rates and the benefits/cons of credit or store cards.

Literacy

In literacy we have been writing narratives and focusing on the finer details of description.  We have also been exploring digital literacy by transferring our writing into comics using the Pixton app.  We held a class vote and our new class novel is The Christmasaurus Cracker which is the brand new novel by Tom Fletcher.  In French, we are looking at describing our likes/dislikes, describing clothes and colours, and talking about the weather around the world.

Other areas

We have been learning about sustainability.  We found other uses for plastic bags such as jewellery and clothes!  We also learned more about energy, recycling and waste.  We built our own windfarms using lego or junk modelling. We also designed and created our own class scarecrow as part of a whole school challenge.  Her name is Betty and you can see her final version below!

We have started a new STEAM challenge called the Air Race Challenge.  We have been tasked with designing, building and operating a drone course which is very exciting!  We will be sharing details of our progress very soon!

We had the West Lothian Rangers Service visit us and we completed an outdoor learning workshop with them.  We had to use our problem solving skills to complete their challenges!

We have enjoyed:

L – I liked creating comics using our free writing, it was fun!

H – I liked helping at the coffee morning, it was nice to see everyone and we raised so much money for McMillan.

R – I liked the plastic bag challenge when we had to find another use for them, we made bracelets.

Numeracy & Maths

We have finished our multiplication block where we covered lots and lots of different methods! We will continue to practise our times tables daily and the four operations through our class number talks.  Our next block is division which will cover the bus stop method with higher numbers and the chunking method.  In Maths, we have been learning about data handling. We have also just completed an Academy Assessment in Numeracy & Maths in preparation for our transition!

Literacy

In literacy, we have been writing recounts and we had a real crime scene set up to base our writing around where poor Mr Swift had been murdered! (pretend only!)  In French and Spanish, we have been learning numerical language and counting up to 100.  We are also learning BSL as part of our assembly which will be on Friday 30th September at 9am!

Other areas

During indoor P.E we are nearing the end of our block of gymnastics.  We have learned how to complete a straddle vault.  Our outdoor P.E block has involved us creating skills stations in small groups to perform to the class and work around in a carousel.

We made our 3D models of the Scottish Parliament building.  Some chose to build out of clay, others chose LEGO or junk modelling.

We have created a script and practised our roles for our assembly.  The leadership team have also been busy organising and planning the MacMillan Coffee morning which will be held directly after our assembly on the 30th.

We have enjoyed:

R – I am really enjoying P7 because it is fun!

H – I enjoyed learning about Parliament because I like politics.

L – I have found the Academy Maths fun to complete!

J – I am enjoying writing for the first time in school because I can be creative!

Please feel free to leave us any comments and we will read them out in class!
