P6W Blog 23rd December 2022

It has been another very busy few weeks in P6, especially in the lead up to Christmas!

In literacy we have developing our comprehensions skills by reading extracts from Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” and have been learning how to create imagined recounts by writing dairies from the point of view of people living through the war. As part of our STEAM project we created activities to teach to infant classes using Christmas Stories as inspiration – we chose “The Snowman.”  Some of our children visited the Primary One classes to do snowman vegetable prints and snowman inspired Beebot tasks where the children could practise their coordinates, direction and ICT Skills.  We have also been creating Christmas Comic strips and listening and talking, we presented our class talks on famous World War 2 figures.

In numeracy we have been learning how to convert fractions into decimals and investigating percentages and how they link to fraction and decimals.  In Maths we have continued to investigate different ways to measure, specifically learning how to measure area and perimeter of simple and compound shapes.

In art we have been creating “Blitz Art” to display on the walls.  We created an oil pastel background using red, yellow and orange colour and then created a foreground of silhouettes using black card. In health and well-l being we have been thinking about our dreams and goals for the future.

We had our Christmas party where we played games such as Christmas Musical Statues, Christmas Corners and Musical Arms. We also did some of the dances we had been practising in PE including The Slosh, The Macarena and The Cha Cha Slide.

We have been working on developing our STEAM skills through a variety of tasks including creating a moving sleigh for Santa using straws and a balloon, creating melted snowmen biscuits and 3D paper models of gingerbread houses, snowmen, spitfires and Anderson Shelters. We went on our Community Christmas walk wearing the Elf headbands that we had created – we managed to get 76 “toots” from people passing in their cars.

P4 Learn It! Log It! Blog It!

P4hs have been very busy making and decorating cake pops to sell at the Christmas Fayre as part of our Enterprise project.  It was so much fun and we sold every last one at the Christmas Fayre last Friday.  A big thank you to everyone who bought a cake pop.

We also made our Christmas banner with a gingerbread house theme.  We each made a snowflake and we put a photograph of ourselves on our snowflakes!

We have finished our Egyptians topic which we all enjoyed and we are now focusing on our Farm to Fork topic.

In writing, we have been focusing on poetry and we wrote some amazing shape poems and acrostic poems. To help us with writing poems we learned about alliteration, similes and metaphors and lastly onomatopoeias, WOW!

In PE we were learning to play bench ball as we attended a Bench ball Festival at Armadale Community Centre with Southdale Primary and Blackridge Primary.  We really enjoyed our bench ball festival and scored lots of goals.

In RME we have been learning about different bible stories and this week we focused on the Nativity story.

We have also been learning the words for our favourite pets and animals in French.

Our class novel is The Christmasaurus and the Winter Witch which we are hoping to finish before we break up for Christmas.

Literacy:

In literacy this week we have been learning how to structure and write an exposition.  We have been looking at persuasive language and vocabulary that we can use to persuade our reader.  In comprehension we have been looking at similar texts and answering evaluative questions.  We have finished our class novel – The Christmasaurus Cracker which we really enjoyed and we are hoping to start our new one after the holidays.

Numeracy:

In numeracy, we are finishing up a block of integers as part of our Academy transition.  In class, we are focussing on decimals and using the four operations.  We continue to practise our mental maths every day and our times tables especially the 7,8 and 12.

Topic/IDL:

We have completed another whole school STEAM challenge with lots of exciting activities such as designing and building our own snowball launcher, building the Tallest Christmas tree that we can and designing, building and testing an elf trap!  We have also started our Kindness Project where we are making Christmas cards and chocolate coins to say Thank You to people in our community.  Next week we plan to visit and deliver our Thank You gifts to spread some Christmas cheer!

Other Achievements:

Our coasters have sold well as part of our Enterprise project, if you did not have time to come to the Christmas Fayre, they are still on sale if you wish to purchase.  Just send in money with your child who can buy them at the tuck shop.

We had a successful transition morning on Friday at Armadale Academy where we took part in various activities with the S6 leadership team.  Our favourite activity was the scavenger hunt!

J – I enjoyed our Enterprise project and helping out at the Christmas Fayre.  It was so busy!

R – I liked the ending to the Christmasaurus cracker.

L – I can’t believe we are nearly halfway through P7.  The Academy looks good through, we had pizza for snack!
