Movement breaks in HWB

We have been learning about the importance of movement breaks during our lessons.  When we move we get the blood pumping round our bodies and to our brains and it helps us to do better learning.  We tried it out and afterwards the children brainstormed how they felt.  Here are some of the words they used – Awesome, Awake, Healthy, Happy, Ready to Learn!  Looks like our movement breaks are a winner!

Week beginning 20th January 2020

This week in Primary 2 we have been discovering more about Hamish and his friends. All things Scottish are beginning to appear in out classroom; a tartan skirt, a Scottish flag and even a sporran. We created Acrostic poems about each of his friends. Angus is our favourite. In Art we have been looking at the magic of colour mixing. We had a fabulous time designing and making our Hoggle by mixing a whole variety of greens and oranges. Its not finished yet!

Hamish went on his first adventure starting in Bathagate and onto Edinburgh Castle. He has such great time and even saw the Crown Jewels!

Enjoy Burns Night on Saturday.

P2/3 w.c. 20/1/20

In Literacy this week, Primary 2 have been focusing on the ‘ou’ phoneme and Primary 3 have been focusing on the ‘ve’ phoneme. We have enjoyed learning our spelling words by doing partner dictations, cube spelling and pyramid spelling this week. In Mathematics, we have been learning about sharing amounts equally and also focusing on our number formation. For Topic this week, Hamish and his friends visited the Falkirk Wheel. We have discussed when it was built, what it is made from and how it works. In Art, we moved around stations and worked together to build our classroom Hoggle! All that is left to do is make the roof – it looks fantastic so far!

A fab day in P6

In the morning P6 had a visit from AnneMarie Allan, the author of our class novel, Charlie’s Promise. We were able to ask many questions about the book and the author’s past. We found out that the story was set in a real place and that some characters were based on her family.

We also had a visit from our Tiny Teacher. We can’t believe how much he has grown since we first met him near the start of this year.

P5 Election

Last week Primary 5 took part in a mock election as part of their topic on the Scottish Parliament. The children were divided into groups and had to work together to create their own political party. This involved creating a name, logo, slogan and manifesto for their party. The children then presented their ideas to the rest of the class before voting for the party they wanted to win!

P2/3 week beginning 13/1/20

What a fun week we have had! In Literacy, Primary 2 have been learning the ‘ow’ sound and Primary 3 have been learning the ‘ie’ sound. We have been doing this through sound bubbles, whiteboards, play dough, pyramid spelling and rainbow writing! In PE we were focusing on fitness. We rotated around 6 different stations and discussed our heart rates before and after. In Topic, we drew line drawings of Hamish and wrote adjectives around him. In partners we also drew a Hoggle! We really focused on the colours we were using. For our writing we looked at information reports. We discussed the 4 main parts and ensured we could put them in the correct order. Busy busy busy!

Our first week back at St Marys!

P1s should be proud of how well they have settled back after the Xmas holidays  – their teachers are very impressed! They have enjoyed learning more sounds, reading another new book and writing their wee Thank You letters to Santa (no ulterior motive there at all!). Big Maths proved to be successful as they were able to showcase their knowledge of doubles and practise their counting skills. Well done P1s!

Feedback in P6

Primary 6 have helped each other to improve their still life drawing skills with kind, specific and helpful feedback. With help from friends we were able to add more detail, texture and shading.

Mrs Gardner was so proud of our final results. Now no child in P6 is allowed to say I can’t draw, as the work was so impressive.
