St John Ogilvie Primary School

This week we have been learning the ‘th’ sound. It is a bit of a cheeky sound as we have to stick our tongues out when we say it! We have been practising segmenting and blending words and we are getting confident in reading simple sentences.

On Tuesday, we celebrated Pancake Day. We have a Pancake Parlour in our classroom and we have enjoyed making pancakes for our friends. We also learned about halves in maths and we had to cut our pancake in half. We know that a half is two equal pieces.

On Wednesday, we went along to the hall to take part in the Ash Wednesday Service with Fr Simon. We have been learning all about Lent and during writing we wrote a Lenten Promise. We tried hard to use our sounds and common words. For each day of Lent we are going to choose an act of kindness to carry out. When we have completed this we get to colour in a leaf on our Kindness Tree.

On Friday, we took part in an activity with our House Groups.

Congratulations to Alexander who is our Reading Champion and to Lillian who is our Hot Chocolate winner.

Some of our personal highlights this week are:

Kacper – I enjoyed playing with the numberblocks.

Lillian – I enjoyed making my own band during choosing our own learning time.

Olga – I liked playing in the Pancake Shop.

Joshua – I liked decorating a box at the creative table.

Eve – I enjoyed choosing my own learning.

Miss Stebbing – I was very proud of everyone when they were writing words using the pictures on the pancakes and then flipping them to check they had the correct spelling.

The children have had a good week back!

Aoife, Ameila and Emily loved looking at the area and perimeter of a floor plan and placing furniture.

Olivier liked continuing this work on perimeter.

Myles loved drawing a parrot this week as part of our ecosystem IDL topic.

Josh enjoyed working on information reports.

Patrick noted his fantastic progress in coding this week!

The children who are participating in the PFFA enjoyed going to Mass and receiving their ashes.

A busy first week back with lots of different activities.

Pupil highlights of the week:

•  Sophie-Leigh – “I enjoyed creating the animal artwork. I found it interesting researching an animal and their ecosystem and designing a poster to display the information”
• Aditya – “Calculating the area and perimeter of the furniture and items we had placed in our house floor plan to understand the space that was used up”.
• Jayden – “Exploring symmetry and using mirrors to see the reflection to complete the symmetrical patterns”.

This week, Gracie’s, Niamh’s and Sophie-Leigh’s `book that they had been working on was posted online. Their book focusses on raising awareness about climate change and what we can do to help. Dear Families,

It was lovely to welcome the children back to school after the February break.  They have had a very busy week and have been working super hard!

On Tuesday the children were treated to some yummy pancakes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday.  They could choose from a range of spreads and some of them were very adventurous and tried them all.  The children used a knife to spread their own pancakes and chose to cut their pancakes in to either halves or quarters.

On Wednesday, we had a lovely mass in the hall for Ash Wednesday where some of the children received ashes from Father Simon.

We are very pleased to announce that following on from our job interviews, Jiade has been appointed the role of Office Assistant.  Other children will also be given the opportunity to have a turn in the coming weeks.

In Maths we have been continuing to work on fractions.  The children completed lots of activities on halves and quarters with Miss Roscilli.

This week in literacy, we wrote about baby animals.  The children produced some excellent pieces of writing.  It really has been fantastic to see how much their writing skills are developing week by week.

The children learned about Baptism today and had the opportunity to pretend to baptise a baby.  Here are a few pictures of them in action:

Our hot chocolate winner this week was Chahiti!  She has been working extremely hard and is always very kind and helpful to the other children.  Big congratulations Chahiti!

It has been lovely to be back together with P4b after the February break.  We’ve had a busy week as always.

We’ve been continuing with our multiplication and division topic and have been deepening our understanding of verbs, including relating verbs (am, be, is, being).  We finished off our Scottish Landscapes topics and have started our new topic, recycling.  We had our Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday and some of us received our ashes.  Today, we really enjoyed going into our house groups and talking about our right to express our thoughts, ideas and opinions freely.

Highlights:

Jonah, Zac and Jude: We enjoyed PE because we played a game that was like a real basketball match.  It was a team verses another team and it was like Piggy in Middle.  It was really fun.  We also played Banana Tag and other basketball games.

Aiden: I liked starting our recycling project.  I am looking forward to this project.

Ishani S, Paige and Stefi: We liked doing music with Mrs de Luen because we played a game where we bounced a ball and then we had to do some actions like clap our hands.  I found it really easy and fun.

Matteo: I liked maths this week because we did division.  I feel ready to do this and to learn about the bus stop method.

Shelby: I liked doing Sumdog on the computers because it was fun.

Daniel: I liked listening to the music with Mrs Morrison.

Well done to Shelby, who is our Hot Chocolate winner.

Dear Parents,

Here’s an update on what we’ve be doing this week in p7A.

In maths we have finished our work, for the moment, on fractions decimals and percentages and will complete an assessment on Monday to identify any final gaps to work on before high school. We completed some practical work, measuring the perimeter, area and volume of the classroom, upper area and cloakroom.

In literacy we have continued our reciprocal reading work on A Monster Calls, and we got to visit Carmondean Library on Wednesday afternoon. Joining application forms were sent home as a parent or guardian has to sign for an under 16 year old.

In RME we made Lenten promises and sealed them and will check them at the end of Lent to see how we got on. We visited St. Peter’s church on Wednesday for the Ash Wednesday service. Most of us who were taking part, managed to get our PFFA booklets handed in for the Friday deadline. Monday would be the very last chance!

We enjoyed using acrylic paints to try and paint in the style of Van Gogh and always enjoy our drama lessons.

On Friday we met in our House Groups, discussing what affects our local environment and what we can do to change it. This fits in with Article 13 – I have the right to find out and share information.

A fun filled week doing lots of different activities.

We had Ash Wednesday and lots of us has ashes on our foreheads as a reminder to try to be loving and kind people.

We had pancakes today because we didn’t have them on Pancake day (IS)

Our Hot Choc Winner is Lily.  Our reading Champion is Ignacy.

We went to house groups today and talked about Article 13. Our right to an opinion and we learned what it can mean for us.

We used them Ipads to play on Sumdog.  We did some times tables work and looked at words with a magic ‘e’.  It is now Lent and we are going to learn more about what it means.

In Lent we should try to pray, fast and give to others.

Here are our highlights from the Yellow Table:

Lewis said, his favourite learning this week, was halving numbers.  We used ladybirds and two leaves to help us.  We know that half means dividing, or sharing between two.

Thuran shared that he loved Pancake Tuesday.  He tossed a pancake on the 2^nd try.  He thought it was good fun.

Ollie liked when we planted carrot seeds as part of our learning about farms.  He watered the seeds.  Thank you for your help Ollie.  We look forward to watching them grow, measuring them and then finally enjoying them as part of the ingredients in a healthy vegetable soup.

Isabella said, singing ‘Miss Polly had a Dolly’ with Mrs Morrison was her best part of the week.

Musa loved writing an Information Report.  We have been studying an Information Report about Ducklings.  The children then chose their own title for their own report.  Musa chose to write about scissors and he did a super job.  Well done Musa!

Ishaan has been enjoying watching ‘Down on the Farm’ episodes (https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08pj9xv/down-on-the-farm-series-3-2-cows-in-spring-and-cauliflowers) during snack time.  His favourite one so far, has been about cauliflowers being planted and harvested. Ishaan hopes to be a farmer one day when he is an adult and grow broccoli!

Mrs Devlin’s favourite part of the week was our lessons about Lent.  The children have made a Lenten Promise and have asked God to help them carry it out for 40 days.  We had a beautiful Ash Wednesday service in the Hall with Fr Simon.

Hello P2B families!

Here are our highlights of the week from the Blue Table:

Theo has been enjoying our Number Talks.  For the last 2 weeks, we have been focusing on estimations.  Each day, the children were shown an image of a jar full of different things and working with a partner, (last week it was whole class for modelling purposes) they estimated how many they thought the jar held.  Then I called out different clues, such as: ‘The number is smaller than 40’, then they marked off all the numbers bigger than 40 on a 100 square.  ‘The number is even,’ so they marked off all the odd numbers and so on, until we found the correct number!  The children have been improving at this skill as the 2 weeks have progressed!  I am so proud of them!  Each Number Talk lasts about 10 minutes as are out with the maths lesson.

Blair loved our weekly Word Boost corners game!  It is a big favourite among the class and a super way of revising that week’s words.  Sometimes instead of calling out the word, I call out the meaning of the word.  Blair was a winner this week when his game ended on ‘haul’.  Sofia was another winner this week also.  Well done guys!

Olivia said the best part of her week was our visit to St Peter’s Church.  She enjoyed dipping her fingers in the Baptismal Font.  I hope you enjoyed the pictures that were uploaded on Tuesday.

Evana was eager to share that the Judo Taster session during PE on Wednesday was the highlight of her week.

Amariah-Grace loved making Valentine cards today.

Mrs Devlin’s favourite part of the week was how enthusiastic the kids were when they first heard this week’s Word Boost story ‘Unfortunately’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HbmO11wiD8).  The story was about the dangers a boy fell into when he was walking through a jungle.  Each time he was rescued, another danger happened!  The story ended with him in danger.  The children DEMANDED to know what happened next?  Was he rescued?  Was there a part 2?!?! We decided to make our own Part 2 in a comic book version and then, if we wanted to, we shared the story with the class on the Smartboard.  I was so impressed by ALL of the stories!
