St John Ogilvie Primary School

This week was Mental Health Awareness week so when we examined Children’s rights we learned that our mental health clearly links to Article 24 of the CRC also, many of the other rights that children and young people are entitled to, also contribute to good mental health. It also linked to Global Goal 3 which states that everyone should have good health and wellbeing. As part of our learning we explored the Zones of Regulations and why our emotions are effected by things going on around us. e.g. falling out with a friend because we are feeling tired, or hungry. We continued to build our understanding of clarifying words and their meanings in out writing as well as predicting what might happen next.

In math we are learning about algebra, data handling and using time to plan our day/week.

In Spanish we are continuing to use and match our knowledge of colours and clothes names to create a simple outfit. In Science we investigated our circulatory system and built two large bodies to show organs and blood vessels.

We all learned about the feast of the Ascension and some of us went to church to celebrate with holy mass. Some of us went down to Primary 6 to take part in challenges.

As always we were outdoors, weeding and tidying up the front garden beds. We went up to Eliburn Park to take part in their orienteering trail. We hope to do this again in a few weeks time.

Hello P2B families!

Here are our highlights from the Yellow Table:

Lewis loved bridge building this week!  We looked at images of bridges from around the world.  We discovered that they were all different shapes, sizes and made from a range of materials.  In groups, we designed and then made our own bridge that had to cross the space between 2 tables and then withstand a 50g weight.  Super teamwork P2!

Musa said he liked music with Mrs Morrison, where they have continued their session on nursery rhymes.

Amariah-Grace has been enjoying the 5 Times Tables.  The children were amazed to hear that even though we focus on the 2, 5 and 10 Times Tables in P2, they are actually learning many other Times Tables as the answers are the same if the digits are reversed i.e. 5×7 is the same answer as 7×5!  I heard some brains explode!

Ollie enjoyed our new ice cream role-play.  The children suggested this idea for a new role-play area and also wish to set up a police station.  Watch this space!

Tharun said the best part of his week was when he played the role of the Baby Billy Goat in drama this week.  We took this learning up to the woods where there was much more space and found that some logs had already been led out in the shape of a bridge!  That was handy for us!

Isabella has loved saying the Rosary each day with our rosary beads as part of our learning about Mary during the month of May.

Mrs Devlin’s favourite part of the week has to have been the bridge building.  Some teams forgot to consult their design and made it up as they went along.  However, I did see fantastic teamwork, creativity and despite some collapsing again and again during construction, the teams never gave up!  In the end, all teams’ bridges met the success criteria which was, could it withstand a 50g weight.  Well done P2!  I think we have some future engineers in our midst!

Our week started with a letter from the dragon who left us some magic beans to plant. The next day the children came into class to find they had grown into a gigantic beanstalk up through the clouds to a castle.

We decided to read ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and worked on retelling the story in our own words, through drama and sequencing pictures from the story into the correct order.

Lucas – The giant says Fe Fi Fo Fum I smell the blood of an Englishman.

Martyna – I liked acting out the story.

We drew our own beanstalks and imagined ourselves climbing it, using our senses to write what we would see and hear and thought about what the giant was eating for his dinner for what we could smell.

Connor – I can smell chicken nuggets.

Rose – I can smell chips.

Enso – I can smell egg and soldiers.

We used estimation strategies to estimate how many magic beans would fit in different size tubs and shapes. We also continued skip counting to count our steps up the beanstalk and started to think about sharing equally between two.

We also enjoyed play in the area where some children chose role play, sand, water and play dough.

This week in P3A the highlights were:

• Learning what a recount is, identifying its different parts and understanding what each of them should include.
• Exploring a Reading Comprehension about Plastic pollution and its impact on animals and the planet.
• Practising the spelling of high frequency words that are always being used and that can be particularly challenging.
• In Maths, we are loving fractions and have learned how to find a half and a quarter of shapes, even shapes that are divided into many different parts. We have also explored the close link between fractions and division and have solved many exercises about it.
• Our Right of the week was Article number 6, which is all about what children need in order to survive and reach their full potential, which initiated a very interesting class discussion.
• We have continued our work drawing the endangered animals and they are looking amazing!
• Last week we have started learning about how May is the month of Mary and we talked about how important Mary is and why she is considered Mother of God, Mother of the Church and our Heavenly Mother. We’ve created our own pictures of Mary together with beautiful bouquets of flowers to make a May, month of Mary display and we think it is going to be adorable!
• We would like to congratulate Emily for being our Hot Chocolate of the week! Well done, Emily! Thank you for being an amazing and lovely role model for all!🥇👏👏👏🥰

We would also like to congratulate Gryffindor for winning the weekly House Prize!!!!!Go Gryffindor!!!!

Mrs Valente and P3A😘😘

We have been learning about Jack and the Beanstalk this week. The dragon left us some magic seeds and some magic soil. When we planted them a beanstalk grew in our classroom! We read the story and then we went on an adventure using our imaginations to climb up the beanstalk. We could see clouds, a huge door and big furniture. We drew our own beanstalks and  we stuck our photographs on them to look like we were climbing up. We also did some writing about the things we could see, hear and touch when we climbed up.

In maths, we have been counting forwards and backwards in 2s, 5s and 10s. We had a special sheet to help us with our take away and we had to find the correct number for the sum by using the pictures of things from the Jack and the Beanstalk story.

In science, we were learning about things that use mains electricity and things that use batteries. We also learned about the dangers of electricity and how we can keep safe.

We were playing in the Outdoor Classroom on Friday. We played with the toys outside and inside the classroom. We had to spell words by tapping the correct flowers on the wall.

Some of our personal highlights this week are:

Vasilisa – I enjoyed drawing.

Summer Rose – I enjoyed doing outdoor learning.

Joshua – I enjoyed making the castle and building the Lego house.

Olga – I enjoyed using my imagination going on the beanstalk.

Lillian – I enjoyed learning about safety rules.

Oliver – I enjoyed outdoor learning.

Miss Stebbing – I enjoyed seeing everyone’s reaction to the beanstalk growing in our classroom.

In writing this week, we started to write our adventure narratives.  We started by drawing pictures of our setting and main character(s) and then we used a planning sheet to briefly describe the plot, making sure we followed the structure of a narrative.  Then, we began to write the introduction (the opening paragraph).  We had to describe our setting (place) and our characters using lots of adjectives, non-finite clauses, expanded noun phrases and adverbial phrases.  Today, we worked with a partner.  We took it in turns to read out our paragraph, and the other person had to picture in their head what their partner described.  We drew the setting and characters that we could imagine based on their description, and then we worked together to see if we could improve that description.

In PE this week, we went outside now that it is warmer.  We were very happy about this!  We played some games using the compass directions and changing our speed.

In Spanish, we learnt about body parts and the weather.

Our highlights:

Jonah: I liked doing PE, especially the speed game and the compass game.

Jude: I liked doing the start of our narrative because I used non-finite clauses and expanded noun phrases to make my writing really, really descriptive.

Mariam: I enjoyed doing the narrative because I got to write my favourite type of story.

Feranmi: I enjoyed doing the body parts and the weather in Spanish because it was fun.

Well done to Feranmi who is our hot chocolate winner this week!

Dear parents and loved ones,

Here is an overview of our week:

Literacy: We have been working hard on our exposition writing. On Monday the class decided which topic they would like to write about and decided upon:

‘All children should have time to play football during school time’.

We worked really hard on Thursday and Friday to include lots of powerful and emotive language, complex conjunctions and time sequence words to persuade our reader. We did a fantastic job!

The children also enjoyed creating another episode of their reciprocal reading podcasts.

Maths: This week we have been focusing on using mental and written division strategies to solve tricky word problems. We discussed methods such as chunking, the bus stop method and using our multiplication knowledge. We also really enjoyed a new style of numbertalks this week where we had to work out the total amount of cubes used to build a 3D structure.

We have also been working on telling the time, using an analogue clock and we are growing in confidence with this! Please remember to practice at home everyone!

Languages: This week we have been learning how to ask and say our name in French. We have also been learning how to greet each other and respond to simple phrases. We played a really fun musical game with lots of French singing to practice!

Outdoor Learning: This week we were learning about a special type of artwork called ‘land art’. We researched some famous artists who specialise in this type of art and then visited the woodland to create our very own! The children were very confident with identifying their own patterns and lines of symmetry.

Science: We have been learning about the human body this term, so this week we focused on the digestive system! We watched an interesting documentary and then worked collaboratively to research the process and involved organs a little bit deeper! We have made some fantastic infographic posters to display around the classroom.

Right of the Week: This week’s Right of the Week was article 6 which recognises that all children and young people have the right to survive and the right to develop. We worked in groups to think about everything a newborn baby needs to survive and develop and then compared this with the needs of a teenager. We found lots in common but also lots of different things too!

R.E. : We have continued to learn about Mary since it is the month of May. We have really enjoyed listening to some lovely Mary-inspired hymns and looking at some Mary icon artwork. Some of us even created our very own fantastic Mary artwork.

Hi! It’s Siddharth and Niamh, this weeks lead learners. We hope you have had a good week. This is this weeks blog. We have been doing B.O.D.M.A.S in maths  and in literacy we are now doing exposition  texts. This is going to help us with our speeches for house and vice captains for next year – we are starting to think about these! Also, throughout the week we have been learning about substance misuse in health and wellbeing and learning about the different effects and risks they have on the body. On Thursday we went outside and played football with P7B. Everyone worked well as a team.

I found it fun doing the exposition on why Miss MacGregor should be our teacher next year. We had to convince her why she should be our P7 teacher, using persuasive techniques.-Gracie
