P6B 13th Jan

Hello P6B families,

We have had a great first week back after Christmas. It has been lovely to see everyone and hear about what you all got up to.

This week we have started rehearsing for our Burns performance and I have been really impressed with the Scots language. Everyone has been working really hard to learn their parts.

Our class highlights are:

  • Vivien and Praise – enjoyed recapping our maths skills from last term and consolidating our learning about fractions, decimals and percentages.
  • Summer – “I liked playing games in PE with Mrs Lafferty. The games will help me to be more ready and aware, which I can use in class!”
  • Niamh – “I enjoyed developing my music skills when I played brass”.
  • Aditya, Akash and Naman – enjoyed learning about Robert Burns through exploring some poems and researching about his life to create PowerPoints.

Well done to Naman who was this weeks hot chocolate winner. Naman has been very helpful in class by giving reminders about being ready and respectful.

Have a lovely weekend and see you on Monday!

Just a reminder for everyone.

Online numeracy site – SUMDOG. Each child has login information to access their account. It adapts to individual abilities and adjusts level of challenge appropriately. Please ensure that the account is only used by the child it was created for. Thank you

Primary 1A Learning Highlights 13th January 2023

This week we have been learning the ‘j’ sound. We have been using a game on Twinkl Go to help us to spell words and we are getting very good at sounding them out. In writing, we have been looking at Narrative. We know this type of writing has a beginning, middle and an end.

In maths, we have been practising our addition skills. We used the rekenreks to help us complete the addition sums. We have also been using coins to pay for items. We have been learning to use different coins and not just 1p coins.

We started our new topic that is all about Our Local Area. On Thursday, we went for a walk in part of our local area. We saw the Burn, lots of trees, the main road, a park and houses. We have been learning the names of different types of houses.

We have been playing well during Choosing Our Own Learning Time. In the area, we now have a reading den, a new house corner and new sand and water trays. We have been lots of fun!

Some of our personal highlights this week are

Lillian – I enjoyed going out for the walk.

Vasilisa – I enjoyed choosing my own learning.

Vedansh – I liked to do building in my class.

Olga – I enjoyed going on the walk.

Mohitha – I enjoyed playing with the toys.

Summer Rose – I enjoyed watching the water in the Burn.

Congratulations to Aarav who is our Hot Choc Winner this week.

P1B Learning Highlights 13th January 2023

A very Happy New Year to all our families and friends.

The children have had a great first week back at school.  Ready to learn and happy to be with their friends again and share their news and stories.

This week we have been learning the sounds w and y.  We looked at forming the letters and also sounding out words that have the sounds in them.

For talking and Listening we shared news from our holidays and what we got up to.

We started our new topic ‘Our Local Area’ we discussed what we already knew about our area and what we would like to learn about.

We looked at a map of the UK and located Scotland on it.  We looked at Google Earth and we found our School and some people found their houses.  We looked at different types of houses learning their names and how they differ from each other.  We drew some houses for our wall display.  We also looked at different room in a house i.e. bathroom, bedroom, kitchen.

In maths and Numeracy this week we looked at the months of the year.  We sang songs to try to help us remember the names.  We were able to recall what month our birthday is in.  We also looked at money.  We played some money games on the Ipad and we learned the names of the coins.  We used 1p coins to make amounts within 10p to buy items.

We spoke about New Year Resolutions and we all decided to try and do something for the New Year either at home or in school.  We wrote a prayer to ask God to bless us all this new year.

Well done to Bradley our Hot Chocolate winner this week!

Primary 5B weekly blog 13th January 2023

Welcome back to Primary 5B and our first blog of 2023. Homework will be posted in TEAMS from Monday 16h of January.A written copy of spelling activities has been given to each pupil. Pupils will have wordboost or spelling activities to complete each week as well as a written math task. Pupils can still use Prodigy and Sumdog to develop their math skills. There are a few suggested activities for John Muir topic but these are optional.

This term we are learning about decimal numbers. How to recognise them, add, subtract, multiply and divide. We will also be learning about fractions and percentages as well. During January we will be developing understanding of SCOTS language and using it in some narrative writing.

We continue with our Rights Respecting Journey delving into the history behind Holocaust Memorial Day which will be on the 27th of January. We found out about Anne Frank and her captivity during the second world war. The rights we talked about where

  • Article 2 – The Convention applies to every child without discrimination
  • Article 19 – Protection from violence, abuse and neglect
  • Article 37- No child should be tortured, sentenced to death, imprisoned unfairly or treated in a cruel or inhuman way
  • Article 38- No child under 15 should join the army and children should be protected in war

Our topic is all about John Muir. He was a Scottish-American naturalist who is known as “John of the Mountains” and “Father of the National Parks”. Aside from being a naturalist, he was also an environmental philosopher, glaciologist, and one of the proponents for advocating the preservation of wilderness.  At the end of this topic pupils will receive a certifcate from the John Muir Society.

As an introduction to this topic we went out for a walk around Eliburn Reservoir taking photographs of nature in the local area. Seeing the swans and ducks was exciting. We are looking forward to finding out more about the changes in our local environment.

P5A Weekly Update 23rd December 2022

Dear parents,

Merry Christmas! We are so excited that the big day is only 2 sleeps away!

This week has been a busy but fun-filled week! Our highlights of the week include some Kahoot! quizzes, our Christmas party and our maths escape room challenge.

On Monday we had our Christmas party! We played lots of fun party games and even showcased our Scottish dancing! We had the most wonderful time!

During lunch time on Wednesday some cheeky elves somehow found their way into our classroom and taped our door shut! We were trapped in the elves’ workshop but luckily had a chance to escape… if we solved the maths problems in time of course! Everyone worked really hard to complete the challenge and it was Emily, Nikola, Eilidh and Carina to solve the problem first! They were awarded with the password to the secret box containing the magical scissors which they used to cut us free from the cheeky elves! Congratulations girls! We also found that the cheeky elves left some prizes for the winners in our classroom

We also really enjoyed our science afternoon this week! We were learning about parallel and series circuits and loved building and experimenting with these.

On Thursday we made some Christmas cards for our family and friends and Miss Ventisei was lucky enough to receive a few beautiful cards too! Thank you so much P5A! We also really enjoyed a special film and popcorn treat with P5B as a thank you and well done for all of our hard work this term.

Our Hot Chocolate winner this week is Leo. He has worked so hard this week and shown all our school values. Well done Leo, we are all so, so, so proud of you.

P5A would also like to say a big thank you to all parents for their continued support over the past few months! We hope everyone has a wonderful winter holiday and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday the 9th of January.
