This is a quick update for this week.

This week was full of activities like on Monday we did our Literacy. In Literacy we did Homophones and near homophones. After lunch we did topic which was “Into the Forest.” We looked in the book and every page was very interesting because we got to find hidden pictures with magnifying glasses. We went to the woodlands to read to our buddies for World Book Day.

10th March 2023-P5A

Dear parents and families,

We have had yet another wonderful and busy week as we celebrated World Book Week, Fairtrade Fortnight and St John Ogilvie’s feast day.

Our area novel study for World Book Day is ‘Here We Are: Notes From Planet Earth’ by Oliver Jeffers. Here is a short summary:

‘Written as a manual to life on Earth from new dad Oliver Jeffers to his baby son, this simple, life-affirming picture book is both an overview of Earth and a guide to living well: concepts of kindness, tolerance and environmental responsibility are discussed’ (Scottish Book Trust).

All week we have completed lots of fun and thought-provoking activities centred around this book. For example during literacy, we created our very own whole-class project board to share lots of our ideas, knowledge, opinions and artwork. As a class we absolutely loved the pages about space and the solar system so on Tuesday, Mrs Callaghan very kindly taught everyone all of the planet names in Spanish! We are very excited that we can now list every single planet in the correct order from the sun- in both Spanish and English!  Our love for learning about the solar system also inspired us to make our very own planet Earth models. We used air-drying modelling clay to create a sphere shape, cut it in half, added our land and left to dry. After leaving to dry for 24hrs, we painted our land and sea and added our layers. We know that the Earth’s layers are made up of the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. Take a look at our fantastic creations below!

On Wednesday, we were very excited about our book-tasting event! As we moved around the class, we explored lots of brand new books for ‘starter’, ‘main’ and ‘dessert’ and even gave each a star rating out of 5. The children particularly enjoyed completing their ‘menus’ and it was lovely to see everyone had chosen lots of new books that they would like to read next! Well done P5A!

For outdoor learning this week, we were lucky enough to join P3B for a reading-buddy session in the woodland!  We really enjoyed selecting a book and finding a nice, cosy spot to read in- whilst also keeping our buddies safe in the woods. We even had a chance to show some of the P3 pupils our mouse houses and bird nests!

Throughout maths we have been focusing on fractions of quantities and percentages. We identified lots of examples of percentages in everyday life- the most common being our iPad batteries- and also thought about how they are linked to our knowledge of fractions and decimals. Lots of children said that their favourite activity was at the game station on Wednesday. We were challenged to match up over 200 percentage dominoes in under 20 minutes! All 3 teams did a fantastic job but no one quite managed all of them, so we will have to have a rematch next week! Another class highlight for maths this week was our Number Talks starters. We have been making our way through lots of challenging splat! fraction tasks (we have completed over 25!) and we are now really good at solving these problems in record time.

Since today (10th March) is the feast day of St John Ogilvie, we have been learning all about our school’s patron saint. After lots of class discussions and research, we decided to create a Padlet page with all of our knowledge and thoughts around St John Ogilvie’s life. We managed to add over 250 posts of thought-provoking observations and information which we were very keen to share with our classmates. We also printed this page off to display in our classroom and share our knowledge with others. Excellent work P5A!

On Thursday afternoon, we spent some time thinking about our child rights and Fairtrade. We reflected upon the benefit of Fairtrade for farmers and their communities and also considered our role in this. After creating a whole-class mindmap, we made some fantastic posters and leaflets to share our own learning and reflections with our school community.

On Friday morning we had a whole-school mass for the St John Ogilvie feast day with Father Simon. We also celebrated with some yummy cake, kindly baked by our kitchen staff! We all agreed that this was our favourite moment of the week!

Thank you for another fantastic week P5A, have a lovely weekend and see you all on Monday.

Primary 1A Learning Highlights 10th March 2023

This week we have taken part in our School Book Week and have completed lots of different learning tasks. Our main focus has been on a book study of The River by Tom Percival. We learned about the names of the parts of the river and labelled a diagram to show these. We then wrote super sentences about the parts of the river. In maths, we have been learning about tally marks and we used this to make a graph about our favourite season. We also learned about animals that live in and around rivers. We drew pictures of these animals to put on our display. We have been learning the ’ee’ sound this week and we wrote ‘ee’ words in a tree.

As part of our Book Week, we went up to the Woodland Library with our Buddies. It was great fun reading the books in the woodland. We also took part in a Book Champion activity and each day we read two books and voted for our favourite one.  Each day we watched the Masked Reader and tried hard to think about which member of staff it was. Some days it was very easy and some days it was more challenging!

On Wednesday, we went to visit Fr Simon at St Peter’s Church. He showed us all the different parts of the church. We were very respectful and all the staff were very proud of us. When we got back to school we drew pictures of the things we could remember seeing in the Church. We made sure we had lots of detail, even down to the drawing the glass of water Fr Simon had.

On Friday, we celebrated the Feast Day of St John Ogilvie. We listened well during Mass and we got some cake to celebrate, it was delicious!

Some of our personal highlights this week are:

Joshua – I enjoyed doing the masked reader.

Connor – I enjoyed doing the Book Challenge.

Filip – I enjoyed playing in the vets.

Olga – I enjoyed drawing the river animals.

Harald – I enjoyed doing the book challenge.

Miss Stebbing – I was very proud of everyone when we went on our visit to the Church and also during the Mass to celebrate our School Feast Day.

Congratulations to Alexander who is our hot chocolate winner this week.

Learning Highlights Week Beginning 27th February 2023

This week begins Fair Trade fortnight.  We looked at the Fair Trade logo and learned what it means.  We were able to spot different products with this sign looking at groceries in an online supermarket.

Pablo the Banana informed us that lots of our foods comes from many different countries around the world.  We learned how farmers grow bananas and all about the journey of bananas from the farm to our shops.  We designed posters of Pabelo telling people to buy Fair Trade.

Thursday was World Book Day and this starts a week of activities related to reading.

We read a story ‘Happy Hatchday’ and then watched the author Rob Biddulph teach us how to draw the character.  We worked very hard and Mrs Meikle was very pleased with our amazing drawings.

We read Charlie Cooks Favourite Book, spoke about our favourite books and drew the cover.  We then wrote why we liked it.

We took part in ‘Drop everything and Read’ when the bell sounded we took our book and read it.  We also made our own book marks.

This week we have been looking at doubles and doubles +1 we are getting good at recalling the answers.  We have also been practising counting in 2’s and 10’s and practising writing our numbers to 20 making sure we have no reversals.

In Religion we listened to the story ‘The Good Samaritan’ and discussed how we could be a good Samaritan and a good friend to each other.

We changed our Role Play Area in to a supermarket shop.  We had great fun buying and selling food to each other and we made some Fair Trade stickers to add to the food.

This week’s highlights

Mrs Russell ‘I enjoyed meeting Pabelo and learning all about where bananas come from and how they get to our shops’

Martyna ‘I like choosing my own learning’

Azmeer ‘I like playing with the train set’

P2B Week Beginning 27th February 2023

Hello P2B families!

Here are our highlights from the Red Table:

Ciara said that the best part of her week, was learning that God said, “We are the greatest!”  The children were very excited to hear how special they were to God!

Amy got very excited when she saw that our carrots have started to grow already!  There is the smallest of sprouts but they are still there!

Georgia-Rose thought that our lesson on up-levelling sentences was her highlight.  The children wrote their own sentences in pairs and then swapped with another group to add adjectives.  As you know, the Literacy homework consolidated this learning.

Emily-Ann thought our World Book Day (which SJO are celebrating for a whole week) story ‘The River’ was the best part of her week.  She enjoyed listening to the story and then learning about our very own River Almond.  We saw it on Google Earth.  It is an extremely long river that flows through other towns and cities too.  We watched a video on Youtube that someone made using a drone.  We ducked down when the drone went under some bridges.  We also saw salmon swimming upstream, against the current!

Mrs Devlin’s favourite part of the week was our introductory lesson for Fairtrade Fortnight.  We explored the meaning of the words ‘Fair’ and ‘Unfair’.  The children were horrified to discover that in other parts of the world, there are many inequalities.  They are eager to help the poor!  They know that one of the things they can do is to support poor farmers by helping them get a fair price for their crops so that they can feed, clothe and house their families.  Buying Fair Trade products mean that these farmers get a fair price for their crops.  They compared the taste of Fairtrade and non-Fairtrade chocolate.  They liked the taste of the Fairtrade best and hope to encourage their parents to buy more of these products, if possible.

Congratulations to Olivia, our Hot Chocolate award winner.

P5A Weekly Update: 3rd March 2023

Dear parents and families,

We have had another super week!

For literacy this week, we have mainly been focused on World Book Day! We had great fun creating some book covers and blurbs and watching a live writers session with our class favourite author, David Walliams. We also enjoyed our ‘drop everything and read’ sessions on Thursday when the bell rang throughout the day and we had to read our ERIC book! As a class we love ERIC time so we were more than happy to spend lots of extra time doing this!

During maths we have been working really hard on addition and subtraction of fractions, converting improper fractions to mixed fractions and calculating fractions of quantities. We had great fun completing lots of timed challenges, smartboard games and collaborative learning posters to consolidate our thinking. Next week will be our last week of fractions, decimals and percentages before we move on to a brand new topic again!

Our overall class highlight of the week was our assembly on Friday morning! We had great fun showing our parents and families around our woodland and playground area whilst we completed an orienteering challenge and created some fantastic mouse houses and birds nests! A big thank you to all parents who came and got stuck in with their children! We all had a wonderful time and hope that you learnt something along the way!

Throughout topic this week we have been mainly focused on completing our John Muir presentations which we will take home with us on Monday! We also learnt about primary and secondary sources and completed our very own John Muir inspired historical enquiry. We loved exploring John Muir’s original journal, books and artwork to answer our own developed questions. Excellent work P5A.

This week our Hot Chocolate winner was Tyler! He consistently demonstrated our school values of ready, respectful and safe. Congratulations Tyler!

Thank you for another wonderful week P5A, see you all on Monday!

P4b weekly blog post 3rd March 2023

It has been a short yet exciting week this week.

As it was World Book Day yesterday, we introduced our new book focus:

We had a lovely discussion about the different pages as we read through it together.  We are really interested about understanding how the world works (plus it links brilliantly with our recycling topic) so we’ve done lots of geography based on the book.  We’ve looked at the planets in our Solar System, and then focused on Earth, learning about the oceans and continents and the different climate zones.  We all enjoyed singing along to the Continent Song on YouTube!

Here are some of our highlights from this week:

Layla: I liked finding the notes and rhythms with Mrs de Luen because I liked the challenge.

Amelia: I loved the Masked Reader because it was fun to guess who was behind the mask.

Alexa: I enjoyed doing PE because I enjoyed reading when the bell went.

Khael: I enjoyed doing our World Book Day Book, which is called Here We Are, Notes for living on Planet Earth.  I liked the activities.

Jude: I liked doing the climate zones because I didn’t know about them before.

Well done to Szymon, our hot chocolate winner.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Mrs Brown
