P4B

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Good morning everyone, hooray we have all completed one full week in Primary 4. This week I have been getting to know your lovely children some appear confident and happy, some are feeling a little anxious. Gradually, we have been easing back in to school life and learning new routines that will keep everyone as safe as possible.

Best days of the week so far appear to be Tuesday and Thursday as they have outdoor PE with Mrs Lafferty and Outdoor Learning in the afternoon with myself and a support assistant. Over the next few weeks we will be weeding the school garden area at the back of the school and bringing it back to life. It would be excellent if you could allow your child to bring in Wellington boots or old shoes which you don’t mind getting them muddy, they will bring them home each day as we can’t store them at school.

We are also making a great effort to get academic learning back at the appropriate level to build the learning confidence of all the children in our class. We have already carried out spelling, reading and maths assessments with a few more assessments to be carried out next week.

Primary 4 are hoping to set up homework through teams in the next few weeks but I want to build the children’s confidence using the system before we use it for homework purposes. By the end of August they will be in a reading group and their reading book will go home with them.  I am hoping over the next few weeks that the children will be able to post a weekly blog to let you all know their favourite learning activities and how they are feeling.

Thank you for sharing your lovely children with me this year, I hope they will have a wonderful learning adventure in Primary 4.

Primary 5A Weekly Update 23/8/20

Welcome back to Primary 5A and their families !

The children have made a fantastic start to the year, adapting well to their new environment and quickly taking on board the school rules of being ” ready, respectful and safe!”

Art – Primary 5 A completed personality swirls using bright colours and intricate patterns. They chose various adjectives to describe their individual personalities.

Maths – We have been learning about place value and the value of individual digits in particular numbers. We have also been partitioning numbers. Primary 5 had a lot of fun completing their first ” Big Maths” challenge where they answered times tables questions in a set time.  The children will try to improve on their performance each week.

Writing– The children completed a piece of writing entitled ” All About Me” which described their strengths as a learner, hopes for Primary 5 and aspirations for the future!

Health and Wellbeing– Primary 5 have been participating in activities and class discussions based on the Health and Wellbeing Indicators of being safe, healthy, active, nurtured, achieving, respected, responsible and included.

I am very pleased with positive start that P5A has made. Watch this space next Friday afternoon for our learning highlights from the week beginning 24th August !

Primary 5B’s first full week

Dear parents, carers and friends:

We have finished our first week in Primary 5B and feel very proud of our hard but fun work!😃

Throughout this first full week we have had the opportunity to do a lot a work, from active spelling activities with our SHANARRI WORDS, (Safe, Healthy, Active, Nurtured, Achieving, Respectful, Responsible and Included) to our first piece of writing! We have also learned all about place value and had some tricky active challenges! One of the most important moments of our week was learning about the miracle of Fatima and all the boys and girls were astonished by how many thousands of people had been there to see it!

We have also had the opportunity to play ‘Hangman’ and ‘Guess who’s on the board?’ and that was very much fun for everyone!

The week ended with our classic ‘Big maths beat that’  and also with our first online Senior Assembly! It has been great being together again!🥳🥳🥳🥳

❤ to all and wishes of a great weekend followed by a wonderful new week!

Mrs Valente and P5B 😘😘

Primary 1A Weekly Update 21st August 2020

We have completed our first full week of school and Miss Stebbing is very proud of us all. We have settled into school really well and have learned our new routines quickly.

This week we have been focusing on our listening skills. We had to listen for sounds that were the same or different and also loud or quiet. This is something we can practice at home to help us get ready for learning our sounds.

Our book this week was The Colour Monster and we learned about lots of different feelings. We made a class colour monster where we all got to colour in a square to show how we were feeling. We had some yellow as we we were happy to be making friends and playing. Some blue because we felt a bit sad when we missed our families. Pink as we felt loved by our class. Green as we were learning about blowing bubbles to be calm. We also had black as we were a bit scared when there was a bear in one of the stories we heard.

In writing Ogilvie Bear brought us some of his favourite things. We wrote sentences for him using the word ‘likes’.

We have enjoyed continuing to explore the resources in the classroom and the most popular have been the monsters and beads to help our fine motor skills for writing, the car mat and the number blocks tray.

Today we enjoyed seeing ourselves on screen for our first virtual assembly with Mrs Egan. We also discussed how we show Ready, Respectful and Safe for our class charter.

Ella and Kyle are our first lead learners.  Next week they are going to watch for classmates who line up nicely, push in their chairs and who are kind to each other.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

This week in P1B

We have all had a great time in P1B this week. We have been getting used to daily routines and learning about our school rules.

We loved reading the story ‘The Colour Monster’ and learning about feelings. We used fantastic cutting skills to sort pictures into how they make us feel and coloured in a class Colour Monster to go on the wall.

Mrs Meikle and Mrs Russell have been very happy with our hard work with our number recognition and number ordering and we liked  making sentences about things Ogilvie bear likes or loves.

We have enjoyed play, particularly making models with Lego, making different marble runs and investigating different natural materials using magnifying glasses.

Scott: I love school!

Flynn: I like to draw.

Addison: The Colour Monster is so much fun.

Anthony: The yellow monster is happy.

Sean: I made a game show to win a prize.

P6 Weekly Update

A warm welcome back to our Primary 6 children and their families!

Primary 6 have had a wonderful start to the year. The children have adapted very well to the new rules and regulations and are doing a fantastic job being Ready, Respectful and Safe. They are enjoying being in the upper area and setting a great example for the younger children.

All about me: In order to get to know the children a bit better we asked the children to create ‘All about me’ t-shirts. The children shared their names, ages, favourite subjects, songs, animals and colours. We have now displayed these in our classroom.

Art: The children have shown their creativity by painting using the technique ‘Pointillism’ They used some of the work by the French artist Georges Seurat as inspiration for their own paintings.

R.E- We have been learning our new ‘Grace before meals’ and ‘Grace after meals’

Maths: The children have been working on Place Value and understanding how numbers are made up. They have also been working on their times tables and improving their speed and accuracy.

Have a fantastic weekend!

P2/1 Week Beginning 17.8.20

Hello special SJO family!  Your children have been settling well back into school and have enjoyed being in their new classroom with their friends again.  We welcome 4 P1s to our class also!  We have been getting used to our new routines and have been washing our hands regularly to keep safe.  Here are a few things your children enjoyed doing this week:

Matteo liked when his table won the most treasure today!  On the first day of school we heard a story called ‘Jake’s First Day’.  Jake’s teacher gave the children a treasure chest and the children counted gold coins.  We decided we wanted to do that too!  Each group of tables have a sparkly treasure chest and the children earn gold coins as a reward for following our ‘ready, respectful, safe’ school rules.  We have seen much kindness in P2/1 this week!

Freya has enjoyed our lessons this week during Religion time.  We have been revisiting the ‘Our Father’ prayer and have been focusing on the meaning of the words: ‘Our Father who art in Heaven’ (Hello God in Heaven, we want to say hello), ‘Give us this day our daily bread’ (Please give us enough to eat today God and thank you for this food), ‘Forgive us our trespasses’ (Please forgive us God when we do the wrong thing and make you sad) and ‘Lead us not into temptation’ (Please help us to be good Father and please you).

Aaeryn-Leigh loved hearing the story ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’.  We heard this story each day this week and by the end of the week we felt we were the author Julia Donaldson because we knew it so well!  We could retell the story and used the rhyming words to help us remember what came next.  We carried out lots of activities such as making our own crown, designing new clothes for the Giant, creating our own character who had a problem and a matching activity.  We have been busy bees!

Emily liked playing Tag outside during playtime with her friends.  As part of our learning about the word ‘Included’, the children made up their own game with a partner and taught it to the class.  That means that next time they are playing outside, they will have ideas for new games they can play together were everyone feels included and welcome to join in.

Here is a link to the story ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ if you want to read it to your child or indeed have them “read” it to you (in their own words).

P3B Learning 21st August 2020

We have had a very busy week back at school.  This week have been practising our spelling and reading our common words.  We made ice creams all about us.  We have practised our numbers and been in 2’s and 20’s.

For RE this week we listened to a story from the bible about The Good Shepherd who had lost one of his sheep.  We have been thinking about how we all need to look after each other.   On our wellbeing Wednesday we learned how to control our breathing and how professor pinwheel can help us remember.

We are looking forward to learning joined-up handwriting this year and bigger numbers and cant wait to do more learning next week.

Virtual Assemblies

We held our first “virtual” assemblies today.  Our Senior assembly for P4 – P7 was with Mrs McKissack and the children talked about our school rules of Ready, Respectful and Safe, talking about what they look like within our school.  They prayed our school prayer together as well.

Our Junior assembly for P1 – P3 was with Mrs Egan.  We also talked about Ready, Respectful and Safe and then Mrs Egan read a story to the children.  Although a little strange at first, it was lovely to be able to come together in some way and for the children to see the other classes on the screen.
