Dear SJO Parents,

P2B had a great week – they have been very busy making rainbows to decorate our classroom and had lots of fun exploring the woodlands with magnifying glasses.

Daniel’s favourite activity was “playing snakes and ladders in Maths because I winned”.

Nicolas enjoyed the “popcorn game because I use the whiteboards and be the teacher”.

Sean liked “when we done the big missing number square because I like counting up to numbers”.

Moeez shared that he “liked it when we done the popcorn because I like being the teacher and reading the words to Rowan”.

Rowan enjoyed “cutting and sticking the letters because I can really concentrate on it”.

Olek’s favourite was “making rainbows because it was so fun”.

My favourite activity was going to explore the woodlands, it was my first time up there and we found lots of bugs using the magnifying glasses!

P2A Week Beginning 23rd August 2021

Hello special SJO families,

P2A have had a busy week!

Here are the learning highlights of the week from the Green Table:

Kayla loved looking at moss with a magnifying glass in the woodland.  This task was a follow up to a fun lesson about magnifying glasses and microscopes.  We looked at objects on the smartboard that had been put under a microscope.  We had a dog’s nose, a buttercup, a bubble and moss among others.  The children were AMAZED!  We only had one person guess correctly!  It was tricky!

Pola enjoyed the lesson about Children’s Rights.  We were focusing on the right to be safe, to learn and to play.  The children worked in groups to create a Rights Garden.  One table made a sky, one grass, one flowers and one bees.  The finished garden is beautiful!  Pola contributed to creating the sky.

Emily liked our prayer writing activity when we thanked God for something or someone in our lives.

Nathan loved when he was chosen to be the ‘teacher’ in our maths ‘Counting Cowboys’ game where the children had to read numbers up to 100.  I think we might have a future teacher in our midst!

Ben’s favourite part of the week was today when he was chosen to be a Lead Learner.  The Lead Learners have many jobs but the most important one is to choose a target for the class to work on.  Both Lead Learners chose ‘Push chairs in’ as the target.  This was a fantastic target as it links to the ‘right to be safe’ we were learning about.

Isabel was excited to play ‘Snakes and Ladders’ as one of the maths activities this week.

My highlight was today when we had our first ‘Free Writing Friday’ session.  The children spoke about, then drew their story before writing it.  Some children then shared the story with the class and had the choice of projecting their voice or speaking into the sparkly microphone.  The stories were fantastic!  We had mermaid stories, fish getting trapped in clams, Santa getting stuck in a chimney are just to mention a few.  I am looking forward to next Friday already!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Homework will start next week so be sure to check this out on Seesaw.  Homework will be issued on a Monday and due on a Friday but can be submitted before then if you wish.

P2A Week Beginning 17th August 2021

Hello special SJO families!

What a fantastic start to the new school year it has been for me, getting to welcome the new P2s into my class!  I am sure you cannot believe it has been a full year since your babies started P1.  The children have all settled in really well and have resumed friendships and have made new friends!  We welcome a new pupil to our SJO family, Izaan!

Here are the learning highlights of the week from the Blue Table:

Ollie liked when we made crowns so we had one as well as the giant, George, from ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’.

Izaan loved playing ‘Counting Cowboys’ during Maths where we had to shoot the answer to the other cowboy.

Lucas enjoyed ‘Choosing Time’ where he chose to play with the marble run.

Ella also enjoyed ‘Choosing Time’ and used her cutting skills to make a pet lama called Flower!

John too said he liked ‘Choosing Time’ where he played with the dinosaurs.

Rebekah loved when we made smart ties and stuck them to our jumpers to pretend we were the giant, George.  We felt very smart with our smart ties on.  I hope you enjoyed the photograph of them on Seesaw.

My highlight has to have been the discussion we had about Heaven.  The children were learning the ‘Our Father’ prayer and the meaning of the words.  They shared who they knew in Heaven.

P2B Highlights – Week Beginning 31st May

Here are our best bits from all the learning that took place this week:

Reyansh liked our learning about the 5 Times Tables and then dividing by 5.

Jude loved listening to all the ‘When I was a Baby’ presentations.  It was so lovely to see photos of the class as babies and hearing all about where, when and what time they were born.

Ishani M really enjoyed Sports Day!  Her favourite station was jumping over the hurdles.

Mariam loved making the Bug Hotels as part of our learning about ‘Homes and Habitats’.

Jonah enjoyed using the ipads to record his voice saying the 5 Times Tables.  The children only had 30 seconds to record and many of them made it just in time!

My highlight was making the Bug Hotels.  The children were so enthusiastic and their creativity shone through as they suggested what the different natural materials could be used for.

P1A Learning Highlights 4th June 2021

This week we have been reading ‘Little Red Riding Hood’.  We were sticking the pictures in the right order, we using our describing to write about Little Red Riding Hood, we made a card for Granny to get well soon and we made basket of food for Granny.  We made sandwiches and we took them outside to eat them in and watched the P7s doing their sports.

We have been learning a new sound it is ‘ou’.  We also learned the sound ‘igh’ and ‘oi’.  We made words using these sounds.

In maths we have been learning to count in 5s, 2s and 10s.  We have been thinking about the teen numbers.  We watched Numberblocks 13 to help us.  We can split the number to say how many tens and how many ones.

During Sports Day we had to do lots of different challenges.  We all got a sticker (Mrs Newall got a sticker too) and Mrs Lafferty said we worked very hard.  Miss Stebbing was very impressed!

Here are some of our personal highlights:

Julia – I enjoyed learning about doing the Red Riding Hood activities.

John – I liked playing with the other children outside.

Pola – I liked doing our reading groups.

Ella – I liked learning about how to read stuff.

Ruari – I learned about writing my name.

P2B Highlights – Week Beginning 24th May 2021

P2B have had a super week!  They had the pleasure of having Mrs McLaughlin who they absolutely love (she tells great jokes) while I was off sick.  Here is what they have said has been the highlights of their week:

Ishani S enjoyed learning about the life of St Mother Teresa.

Layla liked learning about how to take care of a baby.  We are all looking forward to the presentations next week!

Maeve reports that she liked our lessons this week on dictionary skills.  Her and her partner Daniel decided to look up the word ‘car’.  They copied out its definition.  We watched as Mrs Devlin looked up the definition of a new word we had not heard before called ‘reluctant’ and we are going to try and use it in context at home and surprise our families!

Daniel liked our lesson on self-regulation strategies this week as we continue to explore our feelings.  This is a topic we have been revisiting over the school year.  We added to our class self-regulation box which is now full of things that can help us to feel calm and happy.  Some examples are: a teddy, a glitter ball, soft pomp oms, paint, a wand (to help us imagine a magical place), a dinosaur, wooden sticks, lego……… and Matteo and Layla wrote out a list of other reminders to read that include things like speaking to an adult, dancing, praying, deep breaths etc.

Szymon has been enjoying the 5 Times Tables.  We will be learning about dividing by 5 next week.

Freya enjoyed listening to the story ‘My Big Shouting Day’ that Mrs McLaughlin read to the class.

Aiden liked when a bee came to visit the classroom.  Apparently this caused great hysterics and our janitor had to come fetch it out of the lampshade as it was causing too much distraction.

Leah loved using the ipads.  The children were continuing their learning about ‘recounts’ and used their favourite app ‘Chatterpix’ to recount a choice of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ or ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’.

Mrs McLaughlin’s highlight was when she was so impressed with how much the children could tell her about recounts and the vocabulary associated with them.

My highlight was when I returned to work on Thursday and the warm welcome I received back.  The children were not expecting me in that day and they had a big surprise.  I was met with lots of, “I missed you!”  “I was praying for your sore throat”, lots and lots and lots of news about what I had missed and many air hugs.  Thank you boys and girls, I missed you too!

Learning Highlights in P1A 28th May 2021

This week we have been learning about odd and even numbers. We have been using tally marks to count in 5s.

We have been learning about words that rhyme.  We have been reading The 3 Little Pigs.  We did a huff and puff challenge.  We had to blow different items across the table.  Our partners had to tick a sheet to say how many huffs and puffs we did. On Tuesday the Wolf blew down our castle.  He left footprints all over the floor.  We made wanted posters to find the wolf.  He wrote us a letter to tell us he had a bad cold and had sneezed and that was why the castle fell down.  We built houses out of sticks, bricks and wood.  Miss Stebbing tried to blow them down using a hair dryer.  The hair dryer had ears on it so it looked like the wolf!

At outdoor learning some of us were making a fire, some were climbing a tree and some people were playing in the mud kitchen.  It was fun! We were finding sticks for making a fire pit.  They had to be the length from your finger to your elbow.

Some of our personal highlights are:

Ben – I learned about playing nicely with my friends.

Ollie – I learned how to climb trees safely.

Ruari – I learned how to make a fire pit.

Chijiakwu – I learned to count in 5s.

Pola – I learned about being nice to friends and being safe.

Kayla – I learned to share the space in the woodland.

Zosia – I learned about living creatures in the woodland.  I worked with Chijiakwu.
