P6B – 1st post of 2025!

Dear Readers,

We hope you have all had amazing holidays and start by wishing you a very Happy New Year!😃🎉

This term, we will be trying to have our boys and girls writing the blog or at least taking notes of the things that mattered the most during the week. That has already happened this week and as our Blog monitors until the end of January are Jude and Millie, they were the ones to write down most of what you will read. We would like to draw your attention to the fact that this has been an exceptional week since we have spent most of the time working on the organisation of our Burns Supper and therefore didn’t follow our weekly timetable. So, according to Jude and Millie, the Highlights of the week were:

  • Looking at the parts, poems and songs for our Burns Supper.
  • Practising daily with P6A in their classroom for our Burns Supper.
  • In PE we went to the hall and played dodgeball. (We split into teams of two, and if you got hit with the ball, you would have to stand on the bench till you catch the ball on the bench, you could join in again, though the ball had to been thrown by someone in your team.)
  • We learnt about the poem Address to The Haggis, by Robert Burns, have translated it into English and have studied what it meant.
  • We have also been working together with P6A in Music 🎵🎵🎵🎵 to learn our four songs for the Burns Supper.
  • We have particularly enjoyed rewriting the Toast to the lassies and the Toast to the laddies and can’t wait for all of you to listen to them!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
  • Because we could not be reciting a poem that we don’t understand, we have also learned about the poem To a Mouse, by Robert Burns, and got extremely surprised at what it actually meant and also at the way the author was directly talking to the mouse!
  • Since we have been so busy with all things related to Robert Burns and our Burns Supper, we have only had the chance to read two chapters of the Elsewhere Emporium, which wasn’t very good!
  • Some of us felt really confident about reciting Burns’ poems so we have had many people auditioning to recite a whole poem, all by themselves. It was great to see how much effort was put into that by so many boys and girls!
  • Our intensive research on Robert Burns’ life, to help us try and understand better his work and the reasons behind it.
  • We finished the week practising all together in the Upper Area and we are more and more looking forward for all of you to come and see us!

It’s all for now! We finish this post wishing everyone a happy new week when it comes!😃

P5B Week Beginning 6th January 2025

Hello families of P5B!  Happy New Year!  I hope you all had a lovely holiday.  I have missed the children so much and am delighted to see them all return.  Some of them have really sprouted up!

Here are our highlights this week as recorded by the Yellow table:

Daniel, Vinayakarthik and Ellie-May have really enjoyed Dodgeball with Mrs Lafferty (don’t worry, the balls are soft).

Alex has appreciated our lessons on recreating the famous painting ‘The Angelus’ as part of our learning about this prayer.  The children heard how Mrs Brown had this painting hung in her home as a little girl.

Anthony said that the highlight of his week was a very special prayer service we had on Monday about God’s forgiveness.

Ksawery has loved making a PowerPoint about Scotland’s towns and cities for our new topic.  The children have not only been improving their research skills but have been learning to save images, copy and paste.

Nathan has recounted how the story he started on Free Writing Friday was the best part of his week.  The children were tasked with creating an imaginative story with the character of a polar bear (this will link to an upcoming art lesson).  They were welcome to read out what they had written so far and we had some very creative ideas!  We look forward to finishing it next Friday as we only had limited time this week.

Moeez reports that having fun in the snow was a memorable moment for him this week.

Olek has been enjoying learning some Scots language with Mrs Morrison.  Over the next 2 weeks, in celebration of the upcoming Burns Day, the children will be exploring some of their Scottish heritage through poetry and will be creating some of their own with some Scots language too!  I am really looking forward to these learning experiences!

My highlight was our lesson on New Year Resolutions.  The children looked through their literacy and maths jotters and identified what they would like to improve upon this year as well as setting a personal goal.  We had some that ranged from learning to tie shoelaces, joining in on Fruit Friday, to making their own beds.  Fingers crossed!  Mrs Brown’s was to drink more water.

I hope you are enjoying your weekend.

Mrs Brown

P1 Weekly Highlights 10th January 2025

Happy New Year to all our families, we hope you had a wonderful Christmas.  We were so excited to welcome the children back to school on Monday, even though it was very cold and snowy we had a week of great learning.

In Literacy we focused on r reading cvc words, finding and writing r.  We made a rabbit craft.  We read a story about a robin and then completed a step by step drawing of a robin.  The drawings turned out amazing and lots of people have commented how wonderful they look.

We also learned the sound ‘v’ we designed a vase and made a volcano craft.  We learned to form v and to sound out cvc words.  We aslo had to cut and stick a vehicle into the right order, colour it and write a sentence.

Our new topic is ‘Robots’, we read the story Robot Rumpus and spoke about robots.  We designed our own and then wrote about it.  We also played a game to roll a robot.

We were very excited to use iPads to learn about Beebot controls and then in groups we used the Beebots.  We were able to show how to code a Beebot to get from one place to another using single steps.

As it is a new year we looked at the months of the year and practised singing the months of the year rhyme.  We designed our own calendar for 2025 to take home.

We also looked at subtraction, talking about how the biggest number comes first, names for the subtraction sign and we used blocks to count how many to take away to find an answer.

In Religion we learned about the Epiphany and the kings visiting Jesus bringing him gifts.  We drew our own gift for Jesus on a gift tag and made our own class present for Jesus.  We also discussed new year resolutions and came up with our own resolutions for the new year.

Our weekly Highlights

Lena ‘I liked learning the new sounds’

Emilio ‘I liked making my robin’

Dawid ‘I liked the Beebot’

Daniel ‘I liked trying new things like the Beebot’

Felix ‘I liked making things with Lego’

Well done to Kaya our Hot Chocolate Winner this week.  Well done to St Francis House our winners this week.  Have a wonderful weekend everyone and stay safe and warm

Primary 2/1 Learning Highlights 10th January 2025

We have had a great first week back at school in P2/1.

In Literacy, we have been learning the sounds ‘v’ and ‘r’. We have been reading short sentences as well as reading our cvc words. For Wordboost we read The Frightened Little Owl and we were able to listen carefully for the boost words.

In Maths, we have been learning all about subtraction and how to use different strategies to find the answer. We have enjoyed playing games on the Smartboard to help us with this skill.

In RE, we learned about the Epiphany. We made special labels with drawings of our gifts for Jesus. We had to choose something that showed love for others.

In Topic, we have been learning all about robots. We read the book ‘Robot Rumpus’ and had to design our own robot. There were lots of creative ideas! For writing, we wrote about our robots and described what they looked like and what they could do. We also used the Beebots and we had to code them to dance and turn in a circle.  On Friday, we had a great morning creating our own robot models using recycled materials.

As the temperatures have been very low this week we decided to fill some balloons and cups with water and leave them outside. We talked about solids and liquids and had fun trying to melt the ice.

Here are some of our personal highlights from this week:

Hallie – I enjoyed writing about the robot.

Vihaan – I enjoyed playing with the dinosaurs in the ice.

Muhammad – I enjoyed playing with the ice.

Zenith – I enjoyed making the ice.

Freddie – I enjoyed drawing the robot.

Miles – I enjoyed playing with the balloons and the ice.

Congratulations to Dawid who is our Hot Chocolate winner. He has been working hard on using his sounds and identifying the beginning sounds of words.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Primary 6 have been working hard to prepare for their Burns Performance which takes place on January 23rd.  They have been enthusiastically auditioning for parts and learning poetry and songs. The children have supported  and encouraged each other to develop confidence during rehearsals. We are all looking forward to the night and can’t wait to perform in front of an audience!

Our literacy  has been based around  Learning Scots language and understanding some of Burns most famous poems, Address T The Haggis and To A Mouse. We have created our own Scots glossary to help us translate the vocabulary.

In topic we have been researching about the life of Robert Burns and also understanding why it is important to remember and celebrate his work.

During music Mrs Morrison has been teaching us Scottish songs that we will perform on the night!

Congratulations to Ena, who was nominated as our hot chocolate winner this week!

Have a super weekend.

Primary 2 Update – Week Beginning 6.1.25

Happy New Year to all our Families!

It has been fantastic to have the children back in the classroom this week!  They have been particularly excited about the snow and they have been very lucky to get out to play every day.

Over the next few weeks we will be learning about Robots.  This week in writing, we designed our own Robot and wrote about them.  The children had some fantastic ideas about what their robots could do and where they might live.  Next week, we plan to make Robot models.  We would really appreciate it if you could send in any junk materials that you have at home to support this.

In Maths, we have been working on subtraction from 20 and we have also been working out change from 20p.

Today we carried out a science experiment with the snow.  The children collected samples of snow from outside and then we added, salt, sugar, warm water and cold water to the different samples.  We also had a control sample where nothing had been added.  Ask your child to tell you the results, it was very interesting!

Pupil Highlights:

Garvit – I enjoyed doing the science experiment with the snow.

Leighton – I loved making Polar Bear pictures in Art.

Alexander – I enjoyed reading the book ‘The Wild Robot’.

Maja – I liked learning how to takeaway from 20.

Ellie – I enjoyed starting to learn the poem in Scots.

Huge congratulations to our hot chocolate winner thi week, Oscar.  Oscar is always very enthusiastic about his learning and has been working very hard in class.  Keep up the great work Oscar!

Primary 3 Learning highlights 10th January

This week has been great in Primary 3. We have been having lots of fun as well as getting back into our learning and working really hard.

In literacy this week, we have read our new Word boost book and explored our new words. We have been focussing on adjectives this week and have been using a thesaurus to find alternative words to replace boring adjectives in our writing. We learned that a word which means the same thing as another word is called a synonym!

In numeracy and maths this week, we have been doing addition using the column method. The children were awesome at this and lots of us tried doing sums with carrying in them. Everyone was wonderful and did a great job. We are beginning to round off money by looking at getting change when buying an item, and will finish this off next week.

We made some beautiful firework pictures for the new year using paint and straws, and we explored mixing together primary colours to create secondary colours. We started our new topic yesterday which is ‘West Lothian’. We discussed what a local council is and looked at a map of all the places in West Lothian.  In RE, we read the book of Genesis where God creates humans in his own image and we talked about all the ways in which we are unique.

Bradley had a lot of fun doing his chimney sums and getting all his answers correct. He was super proud of himself and so was Miss Duddy!

Rose enjoyed doing her ‘God Created Me’ worksheet where she wrote all about herself, her features and things she likes.

Martyna had fun learning about our new topic West Lothian, and enjoyed doing her map which we added some places to and coloured in.

Luca enjoyed playing on the iPads and had fun playing Top marks maths games!

Victoria enjoyed numeracy this week and learned how to carry tens when using the column method. She was awesome at it and thought it was very fun!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and get lots of rest after a fun week full of learning,

Miss Duddy.

W/E 10/01/2024

Hello families of P4A!

I hope that you all had an amazing Christmas and New Year!

This week P4A have started their year off strong by working super hard on all of their tasks. P4A have revisited their maths work that they worked on prior to the holidays and have shown that they are retaining lots of information throughout subjects such as maths, literacy and all areas of our curriculum.

P4A have begun studying Scotland in class. They are set to explore a variety of different topics all regarding our country such as, cities, landmarks, foods, traditions, famous scots and more!

P4A have been looking closely at the Loch Ness Monster. In our class there are many various opinions regarding this conspiracy and this has opened discussion among the pupils. At home, pupils have homework to complete based on the Loch Ness Monster. This can be found on Microsoft Teams (if anyone requires any assistance please let Miss Maxwell know).

P4A generated new goals and targets for the year, for both school and outside. Pupils have these stored safely in their folders to reflect on throughout the rest of the school year.

On Thursday pupils really enjoyed their time with Mr Pentland. They investigated the dangers of germs and created their own drama performances highlighting what they had learned throughout the lesson. They showed great imagination and creativity! Well done everyone!

Building Thinking Classrooms still remains a huge focus throughout our numeracy. Pupils created posters that are set to guide those unaware of the new initiative and help to understand what BTC is and what it looks like in the classroom. Pupils made fantastic posters showing all of the key points of what BTC entails and a step by step guide of how to introduce it into the classroom.

Pupils also have begun looking at Scots language in literacy. They have become familiar with some words and phrases and as we progress further with this pupils can include it in their writing.

Aadya: “I really enjoyed playing dodgeball in PE this week, especially when Miss Maxwell joined in”

Bodhini: “I loved the drama that we did with Mr Pentland about germs on Thursday”

Ethan: “ I enjoy the new game we have been playing before home time, it is called categories and it is so fun”

Riley: “I liked the maths questions that we did this week”

Rory: “I enjoyed making some nice art work for my family in my free time”

Chahiti: “ The building thinking classroom posters were super fun and I liked using my knowledge to create this”

Hot chocolate winner of the week is Jiade for working so hard! Well done, keep it up.

Christmas Wishes from all at SJO!

Well, what a busy final two weeks at St John Ogilvie PS.  We have had so many different festive events and we are so proud of all of our wonderful pupils who have really embraced the Christmas Spirit.  Some of our highlights have been:

P1 Nativity – Two amazing performances of Cheeky Cherubs followed by P1 visiting St Peter’s to share their wonderful singing with the Parish.

P5 Enterprise – A super showcase of both talent and creative skills raising money for Mary’s Meals.  Thank you to all of the families who came to support P5.

Christmas parties – A full week of festive fun, dancing our socks off and eating Christmas treats.  P1 also had a visit from Santa who brought them all a small gift.

Sacrament of Reconciliation – P3 children and their families joined Fr Clement at St Peter’s on Wednesday evening to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time.  This was a beautiful, peaceful celebration and we are so proud of how well our children prepared in school and at home.  A huge thank you to Miss Duddy for all of her work in preparing the children so well.

Christmas Assembly – We spent some time together today as a whole school.  We sang some carols and said a special prayer together to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas.  We also drew our Christmas raffle, well done to all of our winners.

We are delighted to be able to announce that our Advent Appeal has raised £492 which will be donated to Mary’s Meals and will help to feed a whole class of school children for a full year which is 9125 individual meals.  Thank you, as always for your amazing support.

On behalf of all of the staff, thank you for all of your kind wishes and gifts.

We wish you a very Happy and Holy Christmas and a peaceful New Year!
