P5-7 were very lucky today to have ex professional footballer Derek Ferguson and Gillian from the Show Racism The Red Card team in working with us. Derek told us about some of his experiences as a footballer and how he had seen friends and fellow team members being racially abused.
Derek showed us some of his moves to help us become better movers better thinkers!
Our afternoon session was spent looking at and challenging the stereotypes associated with racism. In groups we discussed and agreed on what racism was. An active and very informative day. In our class we have just finished our class novel “Drawing A Veil” written by Lari Don about a girl who decides to wear a hijab to show her modesty at being a Muslim girl and faces being called all sorts of names for doing so.
One thing we all learned today is that you should “never judge a book by it’s cover”. We all make judgements based on what people look like but we have to get past that and not judge them by their skin colour, culture, nationality or religion, that is what racists do and as a School we do not condone it.
