Syllables

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are staying safer and healthy and you enjoying the snow!

Today I would like to talk about syllables and invite children to take part in this activity which can be a good fun.

The ability to break words apart into chunks or syllables is an important step in developing reading readiness.

Below you will find a short video with some ideas how to practice syllables with your children.

I really hope you will enjoy clapping, tapping and shaking out the syllables, or perhaps you use a different method and you will share it with us? We look forward to hear from you.

Take care

Friendship Rainbow with Miss Taylor

Miss Taylor has planned a friendship activity for you all to take part in and listen to a story called ”Just the way you are”. The story shows that there is lots of different types of friendships and shows that true friends will love you just the way you are. Miss Taylor will post this at lunch time today for you to watch after you’ve made your friendship rainbow.

Resources you will need : –

  • White & coloured paper or card
  • Pencils or felt tips
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or pva glue to stick your strips to the cloud.

Using scissors and felt tips during this activity will help develop your fine motor skills, you could ask your grown up to help you draw a cloud and cut it out. Use coloured card to make the colours of the rainbow strips or colour them in on your own using white card.

Choose a friend or a lady you miss from Saint Anthony’s nursery and choose 7 words or why they are special to you. (Your grown up will help you write these.)

Miss Taylor has chose Miss Watt for her friendship rainbow. Miss Watt is a good friend to me because she :

  1. Is kind to me.
  2. Says funny phrases.
  3. Is caring towards the ladies and children in nursery.
  4. Shares the felt tips with me to draw in the floorbook.
  5. Is lovely inside and out.
  6. Does Zumba with me on the smartboard.
  7. Is always happy.

Miss Taylor hopes you like this activity and enjoys the story, Please add a comment and a picture of your rainbow to the blog for all the ladies and your friends to see.

I hope you have lots of fun, and keep an eye out for Miss Taylor’s story this afternoon.

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all doing ok. Today Mrs Nicol would like to look at practicing our numbers. I have put together a little video of a scavenger hunt using the numbers 1-5 but please feel free to count higher if you would like to.
After watching the short video maybe you could have a look around and see what things you could find for example 1 spoon, 2 books, 3 toys, 4 socks, 5 shoes. These are just an idea of some of the things you might be able to find.

I would also like you to think of any rhymes/songs you can think of with counting in them, here are some of the ones I like.

1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive.

1,2 buckle my shoe 3,4 knock at the door.

1 potato,2 potato,3 potato 4.

Let me know if you can think of any others.

I hope you have as much fun as I did doing this activity. I also hope you all stay safe and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Interactive-educational music

Hello everyone, I hope you and your families are well.  The ladies are missing all the boys and girls, we hope to see you soon.

Today I’ve decided to share some simple interactive-educational music for children.  By dancing and moving their body to music this helps build children’s motor skills, listening skills and following direction.

I hope you enjoy taking part in these exercise songs and maybe try some more of the routines performed by Patty Shukla.

Take care and stay safe.

All the nursery ladies 🙂

Make Land Art

Morning everyone…

I would like to explain to you today how to make land art.

In this activity we are going to create your own land art using a variety of sticks, stones, leaves, pebbles, any natural object you can find out walking, in the garden or even items you have found at the beach on previous visits etc.  You can make these pictures directly on to the ground or grass or even make a picture with a stick in the mud where you are walking.  These can be as simplistic or complex as you like.

For example you could be out walking find a stick and some leaves and berries.  Place the items on the ground to make a picture or pattern or mark some wiggly lines in the mud this is land art.  There is no right or wrong way to do this, even the adults can have fun trying this as well.

Examples of things that can be used, sticks in a variety of sizes, stones large or small, pine cones, pine needles, moss, flowers, berries (remember these can’t be eaten) or even some feathers.  Remember to take a container of some kind to collect your natural materials.  A plastic bag, bucket or even an old shoe box can be used.

Once you have collected your items,  decide where you are going to create your land art outside in the garden or inside if your grown up allows. Often a good idea is to start with a main feature like a large stone or a flower and work outwards it is entirely up to you and can be as big or small as you want it to be and you can even add to it over time.

Creating land art is a useful mindfulness tool that can give your children or yourself space and time to relax and calm down relieving any stresses of the day increasing wellness and self-control and have fun at the same time.

Look forward to seeing examples of your land art. Remember you can create these when your out and about spur of the moment and leave them for others to admire and add to. Maybe even going back to the same spot to see if they have changed any.

See below for some more examples:

We are missing you all, stay safe.

Rainbow Spaghetti and British sign language rainbow story with Miss Taylor

The rainbow spaghetti sensory play activity that we are sharing today is so much fun for children to explore. To make it even more fun we paired it with the book,  “A rainbow of my own” by Don Freeman, which we will add for you to watch. This video will also learn you some British sign language for you to practice at home.

Resources you will need are …

Cook the spaghetti following the instructions on the pack. Drain and rinse the spaghetti.
Put the spaghetti into ziplock bags. You will need one zip lock bag or bowl per colour to keep them separated. Add food colouring and a few drops of water to each bag. Zip the ziplock bags up and mix the spaghetti and food colouring together. Squash it, squeeze it, throw it around, just keep moving the colour around the bag until all of the spaghetti is totally covered. Repeat with each colour. Once all of the spaghetti is covered in food colouring put each colour into your colander and rinse the spaghetti under the tap.
Now it’s time to have FUN!!

You can also try this YouTube video how to say hello around the world! 🙂

I really hope you enjoy this activity and all the ladies will look forward to hear from you, maybe even you manage to make your own video?…
