P4 News – Contexts For Learning

30/11/18

We have had a busy week in P4. Let’s share some of our learning.

Curriculum Areas & Subjects

In PE this week we have been learning all about Scottish Country Dancing. We work on our movement skills and are beginning to work together.

For technologies this week we have been designing and creating some Christmas craft to sell at our school fayre. This has helped us to learn about enterprise and our skills for work.

Interdisciplinary Learning

We used our reading skills to help our learning in Problem Solving this week. Reading the problems helped us to understand what sums to do.

Ethos & Life of the School

The school value we have been learning about this week is Growth Mindset. We develop and show our growth mindset by not giving up and continuing to try our best, even when something is challenging. We try hard to climb out of the learning pit!

Opportunities for Personal Achievements

Well done to Alex, Riley, Leah and Alicia for receiving ‘successful learner’ Head Teacher’s awards this week!

Well done to Elsie for winning a prize in Mrs Stewart’s number family competition!

Well done to all pupils who have shared sporting achievements this week, too.

We hope you have a brilliant weekend!

What P5 have been doing this week

Maths

We have been looking at time. We know that the 9 on the clock means quarter to and the 3 on the clock means quarter past.

The squares were converting 12 hour time to 24 hour time. Some of us have learned how to make a train timetable using 24 hour times.

We were doing some Barvember challenges. Barvember is a website with lots of maths challenges that we have to solve. Each problem had to be solved by using a bar strategy.

Literacy

In Wordsmith we have been listening to the podcast called “The Ghost Thief”. We wrote down what characters thought about each other. We also were looking for powerful language in the text and created a poster about this.

Health and Wellbeing

We discussed how we could show respect to the community. We also found out about different clubs in the area.

In P.E. we were learning the skills in the Dashing White Sergent in Scottish Country Dancing.

We also had our last week of handball with pupils from Bathgate Academy. We loved playing handball and are very grateful for this chance to work with Bathgate Academy. These skills will hopefully help us in our Handball Tournament on the 13th of December!

IDL

We made powerpoints about landscapes in Scotland. We had different groups working on different subjects. We are starting to draw pictures of coastlines, cities, forests, lochs, mountains and rivers.

Extra

We were making a secret Christmas craft for the Christmas Fair. You will need to come along to see what it is! The Choir will also be performing there.

We also on skype to Bathgate Academy and 3 primary schools. There were a few sound problems but we were able to discuss the cost of the school day. The pupils from Bathgate Academy will make this into a play which we will be excited to see.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

West Lothian Council’s Attendance at School Policy

West Lothian Council’s Attendance at School Policy provides a system that intervenes at an early stage and letters are sent to parents/carers when their child’s attendance falls below 90%. This system keeps parents/carers informed about their child’s attendance, as absences can mount up easily and this has an impact on their overall attendance percentages. This also allows us to address any concerns or difficulties parent/ carers are facing getting their children into school or getting them to school on time.

The AIMS team (Attendance Improvement Management Service) has been supporting schools within West Lothian to help raise the profile and priority of attendance issues. The AIMS team work in partnership with schools and families to support the implementation of West Lothian Council’s Attendance at School Policy, focusing on early intervention through regular attendance audits and meetings.

CYPT Attendance Leaflet

Please remember to keep the school office informed of your child’s absence and reasons for this by phoning as early as possible on the first morning of the absence in accordance with West Lothian Council’s procedures for ‘Safe Arrivals.’

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation with this matter, please do not hesitate to contact the school should you have any questions regarding attendance or if you require support with this matter.

Bookbug Bag and Read, Write, Count Bag Gifting event

A big thank you to all the parents who were able to come along on Wednesday afternoon to find out all about the Bookbug Bags (P1) and Read, Write, Count Bags (P2 & P3). We had great fun showing you what is in the bags and know you’ll enjoy sharing the stories at home, as well as playing the games, writing stories and counting. It would be a great idea to keep everything in the bag as your teacher may send home some tasks which you will need the books and games to complete. You can also find more activities to try by going to the Parentclub website: https://www.parentclub.scot/
