Primary 3 visit the Edinburgh International Book festival.

We had lots of fun at the Book Festival this morning. We travelled by coach into Charlotte Square and were ready in the theatre in plenty time for ‘Lift Off!’ Tracey Corderoy, the author, told us stories about their characters Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam – who used to be robbers, but then became cafe owners. We looked our for aliens and played games. We were in ‘Shifty McGifty’s’ team and we won the space game – hooray! Steven Lenton is an illustrator and he showed us how to draw ‘Slippery Sam’ – the results were amazing. After the show we had time to soak up the atmosphere of the Festival. We ate our snacks and then looked about. We met some very friendly alpacas. Mrs Turnbull even had a selfie taken with one of them!

Summer reading challenge

Summer Reading Challenge

The theme for the 2019 Summer Reading Challenge is Space Chase, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landings.

The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays. Sign up at your local library and then read six library books of your choice to complete the Challenge. There are exclusive rewards to collect along the way, and it’s FREE to take part! Register at your local library NOW and start reading!

The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all primary school aged children and is designed for all reading abilities. Children can read whatever they like – comic books, fact books, joke books, picture books – just as long as they are borrowed from the library.  Children receive special rewards each time they finish a book.  Every child who completes the Challenge receives a certificate and medal and FREE entry to Almond Valley Heritage Centre when accompanied by one paying adult per child.

You can join in the fun at Blackburn Library on the 30th July from 10.30-11.30 where you can make your own flying straw rocket!

A message from the JRSOs…

It has been brought to our attention that children are not crossing the road safely on their way to school in the morning, especially in Catherine Terrace.

PARENTS and CARERS:

Please PARK in a safe place to drop your child off, NOT on or opposite the yellow KEEP CLEAR markings.

ALWAYS let your child out of the car onto the pavement and take their hand to cross the road.

Why not …?

  • Park further away from the school gate and walk into school?
  • Sign up for the walking bus?
  • Leave the car at home and walk to school?

Check out https://www.theschoolrun.com/walking-school-run for the benefits of walking to school.

What is the IDL Literacy programme?

At Murrayfield we use an online literacy resource called IDL. All pupils in P4 and P5 have access to the resource as well as some pupils in P6 and P7. Working through the lessons in IDL is beneficial for all pupils as it provides practise on the skills needed to become an effective reader and writer.

The best results are seen when pupils complete at least 1 hour a week on the program. This can be done in school and at home. We would be grateful if you could support your child to log on and complete some lessons at home. Pupils using IDL in school are aware of their username and password.

Further information can be found on the IDL website https://idlsgroup.com/parents

Bookbug Bag and Read, Write, Count Bag Gifting event

A big thank you to all the parents who were able to come along on Wednesday afternoon to find out all about the Bookbug Bags (P1) and Read, Write, Count Bags (P2 & P3). We had great fun showing you what is in the bags and know you’ll enjoy sharing the stories at home, as well as playing the games, writing stories and counting. It would be a great idea to keep everything in the bag as your teacher may send home some tasks which you will need the books and games to complete. You can also find more activities to try by going to the Parentclub website: https://www.parentclub.scot/

JRSO conference

Jack and Esme are our new JRSOs at Murrayfield PS. This morning they attended the training for new JRSOs  at Southdale Primary. At the training they were given lots of ideas for highlighting road safety issues in school. If you have any road safety concerns contact our JRSOs via the school email.

Dyslexia Awareness Week

Did you know that 1 in 10 people are dyslexic?

Dyslexia ranges from mild to severe. 1 person in 10 is dyslexic and of those, 1 in 4 has severe dyslexia. It often runs in the family.

Dyslexia can affect reading, writing and spelling.

If you have dyslexia you may –

  • Have difficulty matching sounds to letter combinations
  • Be confused by similar looking / sounding letters (for example p, b and d)
  • Have difficulty remembering common letter patterns in spelling
  • BUT
  • You may be able to cope well verbally – talking may be a strength.

Dyslexia can also affect:

  • short term memory
  • ability to follow directions or instructions
  • organisational skills

Everyone is different and dyslexia affects people in different ways.  Not everyone with dyslexia will experience the same things.

Dyslexia is not a sign of low intelligence.  Some of the most successful business people are dyslexic.

The process of identification of dyslexia involves the child, the class teacher, the parents and the Support for learning teacher. A profile of strengths and needs is developed. Targeted intervention and strategies are put in place, assessments carried out and an identification can be made dependent on progress made and the continuing needs of the child.

Easter Service

The Lighthouse Club (Scripture Union) are very excited to be leading the Easter Service at the church tomorrow morning. The Easter story will be told by ‘Lighthouse Television’, with reports from some of the important scenes starting from when Jesus arrived in Jerusalem right up to the events of Easter day. The service will start at 9.30am and parents are welcome to join us in the church (although space is limited).
