P7 Transition Ceilidh

Good Morning Everyone,

As promised, here are the pictures from the Transition Ceilidh that the P7’s took part in on Tuesday 7th February 2017.

The children had a wonderful time and as you can see it was a huge success with a great turn out from all the schools who took part 🙂

P5

  • We had great fun making our sandwiches and even had some children feeling adventurous and trying something new! The children confidently discussed the necessary steps to take before and after handling food.
  • We have been working on good table manners and the boys and girls are in the process of creating their own good table manners posters.
  • The P5’s have been working super hard this week on their editing skills. We looked at newspaper articles, discussed these and then used them to find ambitious vocabulary. The children then used these skills to edit their news paper articles from last week.
  • We are enjoying budgeting and are getting really good at working with money. The children are able to compare 5 different retailers with each other when purchasing a grocery list and can compare them and answer related questions.

Have a great long weekend and see you all ready for learning on Wednesday.

P7 News

Just a quick note to say I hope everyone has a lovely February break and a well deserved rest.

The P7 Transition Ceilidh was a huge success and the children had a fantastic morning. All P7 pupils were a credit to Murrayfield and thoroughly enjoyed the dancing along with the live Ceilidh band (and the Haggis Bon Bons were a treat too!)

I will add some photos of the event as soon as my Ipad is up and running again. I have some lovely photos and some videos which I am sure to share at the leavers assembly too (he he).

Take Care

Money! Money! Money!

That’s what we have been excited about this week!  We have been learning about coins up to 10p. We have been using 1p, 2p and 5p to make different amounts and using different combinations.  We have also been counting up purses that have coins in them.  Mrs Wedlock has been extremely impressed with the quality discussion that P1 have been having about strategies.  We have been identifying strategies to help us count and add up coins and then sharing our strategies with our elbow partners.  Talking through your strategy is an important part of learning as it deepens our understanding of what we have learned.  We have been playing money games on the smartboard and have enjoyed exploring the coins and purses and playing with the shopping resources.

Your challenge this weekend is to ask Mums/Dads/Grans etc if you can have a look at some of the coins in their purse/wallet and talk to them about what we have been learning.  Happy money chatting P1W!!

p5 News

  • We had a blast practicing Scottish country dancing with P4 and p5/4 this we ek. Miss Macrae commented that she was very impressed with how many we knew.
  • We had great fun going to the library and having the opportunity to pick books to read for enjoyment. 056055059054057
  • For our big talk we had  an excellent time writing a news paper article on the battle of Stirling Bridge. We had fun looking at all the different elements of newspaper writing and how to include a catchy headline and the w questions.
  • Of course we cant for get the nursery assembly – they did really well

P5/4’s Super Scottish Week!

Another fun-filled busy week in P5/4.  This week the children have continued to impress me by their hard work and determination to improve themselves.

A few of the highlights (as chosen by the children) were:

BIG WRITE

Anna:  I loved writing the Mary, Queen of Scots poem.  It was really good because we got to tell her story by writing a poem.  It meant we could test ourselves to see how much we could remember.

Liam:  I liked doing this too as it was fun to work in our trios to think of rhyming words for our verses.

The children worked in trios this week to create a verse about a certain aspect of the life of Mary, Queen of Scots.  I was delighted with the results and couldn’t wait to share them with you.  We would all love to hear what you think!

Mary, Queen of Scots

By P5/4 and Mrs Vince

Poor wee Mary,

She wasn’t very happy.

She’d been the Queen,

Since she wore a nappy.

King Henry wanted his son,

To marry our wee Mary.

The parliament said NO!

Of him, they were very wary.

So Mary was sent across the sea,

In search of her new life.

Once there, she found her very best friend,

And then became his wife.

The marriage didn’t last for long,

For ill with an earache he fell.

In the same year as she lost him,

She lost her mother as well.

Mary came back to Scotland,

Bur France still felt like home.

She met and married Lord Darnley,

In a ceremony under a dome.

The marriage was blessed with a son,

Prince James was his given name.

His Daddy didn’t last for long,

Was his mother to blame?

Lord Darnely, he was murdered!

Mary found this a hasstle.

She married the Earl of Bothwell,

Then got imprisoned in Lochleven Castle.

She escapes and flees to England,

To ask Queen Liz for help.

Her cousin thinks she is after her job,

So locks her up with a yelp!

For 18 long years she stayed there,

She didn’t know the reason.

Until her cousin Elizabeth,

Found her guilty of treason.

Poor Mary know it was coming,

But didn’t want to be hurt.

Her head fell off the chopping block,

And landed in the dirt.

When Elizabeth and Mary died,

James became the one.

England and Scotland united,

The Union of Crowns was done!

SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCING

As I’m sure you know, our class, along with P5, have been learning some Scottish ceilidh dances in order to meet some of the dance and health and wellbeing experiences and outcomes.  Here are some of the comments from our class which clearly show how much the children are enjoying this part of the curriculum.

Brooke:  I love taking part in the Scottish country dancing even though it can be really challenging.  This week we started to learn a new dance called the Virginia Reel.  We were in sets of 8 and I kept getting mixed up.  It was really good fun though.

Jack:  I really liked the Scottish country dancing too.  This week P4 were doing it with us and some P7’s too.  The Gay Gordon’s was hard this week as I got a wee bit mixed up!

Jay: I really liked the new dance that we learned this week.  It’s much easier for me to take part now that my cast is off. (Not that it ever stopped him before!)

HANDWRITING

We continue to have a whole school focus on handwriting and our class starts every day (Mon-Thur) with a 20 minute session on cursive handwriting.  The difference that it has made to the presentation of work, across the curriculum, is fabulous.  I can’t wait for you to see this at the sharing the learning sessions next week.

Scott:  I like practicing my handwriting every day because it reminds me to use cursive handwriting in all my work.

MATHS

The whole class have been working really hard this block on subtraction – both mentally and using algorithms.  We have looked at a different strategy each week and tried to complete work to help us use and understand each strategy better.  This week we also had more of a practice using algorithms for subtraction two and three digit numbers, with exchange.  This is quite a tricky concept to master so we worked in pairs using our t-shirt number cards to practice this, before completing work independently.

Brihanna:  Maths is my favourite subject but the chimney sums were quite tricky this week.  I liked that we got a chance to talk things through with our partners while playing the games before we had to do the work.  It meant I could get used to what I had to do before having to do the work on my own.

This weeks stars of the week are Brihanna and Neive.  Well done girls.

News from p7

Good Morning,

P7 have had a busy week in their groups completing work for myself while I have been completing my Maths Recovery Training at Bathgate Academy. I have learned a lot and I am looking forward to putting my training into practice. I have already started by playing some games with my class this week and I have some photos to show you. The children really enjoyed it which was great to see! Our topic is also up and running in class and I have a few photos of artwork and our display, which I hope to display some writing on when we have completed it next week.

The children are also preparing themselves for the p7 Transition Ceilidh on Tuesday morning. Don’t forget your EE2’s as we need them for you everyone to attend. I also have some lovely photos of them practicing yesterday  with p6/5 and p7/6. It was a squeeze but well worth it.

Hope you have a lovely weekend. As we finish on Thursday next week for our February break I shall be handing out spelling, reading and maths homework on Monday.

Have Fun!

Miss Moir

P5/4’s Wonderful Week

We have had a fantastic ween in p5/4 with lots and lots of things going on.  Some of our highlights were:

Robert Burns drama workshop

Anna: I liked acting out the story of Robert Burns in the workshop on Wednesday.

Josh: I also liked the Burns’ workshop, especially when we got to make and go into our own time machine.

Kirstin: The best part of the Burns’ workshop was getting to perform to the rest of the school.  I was really pleased to get over my nerves.

Neve: The funniest part of the workshop was when Anton and Josh had to say ‘Every time!’ in a sarcastic voice.

Streetdance taster session

Rachael:  The taster session was really good fun because we learned new moves and got to practice ones we weren’t very good at.

Layla:  The session was really active and that helps to keep us healthy.

Neive: I loved it because I love to dance.

Mary, Queen of Scots topic

Robbie:  It was really fun working on our timelines this week.  We had to work in groups to work out the date for each piece of information.  We found out the dates by researching on the internet, then we had to work out which picture matched each date and piece of information.  It was tricky but good fun.

Scottish poetry writing

Zander: I like writing best of all because the classroom is always quiet and calm during it.

Jay:  I liked writing the Scottish poems because thinking of the Scottish words made our brains work hard!

Liam:  The best thing about the poetry writing was thinking of rhyming words and playing the rhyming match game.

Scottish Country Dancing

Robbie:  We learned ‘Strip the Willow’ this week.  It was quite tricky but really good fun.

Spelling Test

Brihanna: I like our spelling tests every week.

Christopher: I like testing my knowledge to see if I can get better.

Jack:  It was great this week because I got 10 out of 10.  We sang the 10 out of 10 song and I got two raffle tickets!

Reading

I love reading because it helps me get better at spelling as well as reading.

Maths

Esme: Maths was interesting this week because we were learning a different subtraction strategy.  It was tricky but we know that it will get easier with more practice.

Raffle winners

We had more raffle tickets than ever before given out this week – although we had fewer winners than ever before!  We started by doing the raffle dance (one of our favourite parts of the week!) then we chose our winners.  They are:

Prize from the box: Neve, harry and Anton

Pink chair: Neve

Mrs Vince’s chair for one lesson: Emma

Sitting next to Mrs Vince at assembly: Emma

Sitting next to a friend for one lesson: Emma

This week’s star pupils (who get to sit on cushions all week) are Emma and Anna – well done girls!

Homework next week

Homework will be given out as usual on Monday and is due to be fully completed and handed in on Thursday.  A quick reminder that homework club is available on Wednesday lunchtime for anyone who wishes to attend.  This is especially useful if you have been unable to complete homework at home for one reason or another.

In addition to the usual homework, this week the children will  be given a blank sheet  of paper home where they can design their own bench for the playground.  Winning entries will be chosen from each class and the Parent Council will decide on the overall winning entry for each category.  These winners will receive a prize as well as their design on one of the new benches for the playground!  Good luck P5/4!!

Most children have been able to learn at least the first verse of their Scottish poem, next week we will be adding actions and expression to this as well as beginning to learn the second verse.  Children would really appreciate an audience and feedback from friends and family at home.

Have a great weekend, whatever you’re doing.

P5

  • This week we learned strip the willow when doing Scottish country dance with P5/4
  • We did a street dancing taster session and we learned some steps and then turned it into a dance. We have rather good rhythm.
  • We wrote a letter to our loved ones informing them that we are taking forces with William Wallace for big writing. Some brought a tear to Mrs Sneddon’s eye.
  • We got a fantastic opportunity to have a drama workshop and we had to perform it in front of the whole school it was a great opportunity for the p5 and 5/4 classes
  • Daniel came over to our class again today for a visit.

Have a lovely weekend.
